Anyone have a strange dish that they used to eat as a child that isn't around anymore?  I remember lime jello, cream cheese, celery and pecan bits.  I always hated it but it appeared at every family function.

Something my mother called aspic salad - - NYMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Another jello concoction. I don't know what flavor jello, but it was made with tomato juice and had celery, carrots, and olives in it. Hated it! but at least it was only a holiday special and we were never forced to eat it!

Dont know about strange but - liver and onions

[ In Reply To ..]
Never see that anymore.

liver and onions - oldANDtiredMT

There is a place called Lamberts (home of the throwed rolls) in Sikeston Missouri that advertises per billboards far and wide (Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, etc) and they still have liver and onions on the menu...say its one of their top items.

Liver and onions - Monique

Like clockwork, my mother would make liver and onions every week, and although I wasn't a fan of it, I ate it:) I even made liver and onions for my 4 children, but I substituted with calve's liver, which is much more tender and I cooked it so it would not come out like shoe leather. Since the kids left home, I really have not have many liver and onion meals:)

Calves Liver vs Beef Liver - Love Calves liver, hate beef liver

[ In Reply To ..]
There is a HUGE difference in taste between calves liver and beef liver. I cannot do beef liver. I can do calves and chicken liver, though. Beef liver is just horrible. It's what gives liver a bad name.

If the calves liver is soaked in milk, then sauteed up with bacon and onions, it's the best.

Spam. Creamed tuna on toast (sm) - Bindi

[ In Reply To ..]
I grew up in the 1960s. My mom was one of the first moms on the block to work full time and that made for some interesting dinner choices for my dad and me. My dad worked long hours six days a week and I was too young to be trusted in the kitchen, save for "pop it in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes" so the cooking duties remained with my mom. Anyway, I do remember spam for dinner, creamed tuna on toast, Mrs. Paul's fish sticks, Banquet TV dinners. I loved it all and my dad seemed to enjoy it too (he never complained). In all fairness, this was only once or twice a week and the rest of the time she did the more traditional meat and potatoes/vegie dinners. I may have loved it then, but no way would I eat spam now except in a dire emergency! Don't even ask about the creamed tuna on toast...

Creamed tuna on toast - Monique

[ In Reply To ..]
I made creamed tuna on toast for all of my 4 children, because my mom made it for us, and my youngest is 36 and I made it when he was little, so this has been a family tradition!

Regarding the aspic salad, my mom made it too when I was growing up in the 60s, and I truly never ever regarded it my favorite:)

my mom made creamed beef on toast - not tuna

[ In Reply To ..]
She would buy carl budding beef and cut it in cubes.
Completely forgot about that.
Ha... we called that - sm

Sh*t on a shingle!

Not from childhood, but also used to make - creamed tuna served over

[ In Reply To ..]
biscuits (canned of course) sometimes added peas and onions.

Something else I used to make was chicken livers: Soak livers in milk for a couple of hours. Saute with onions and green peppers. Serve over bed of rice. Yum. I never see chicken livers in the little containers in the store any more. Do they still have them, or am I just not really looking?

Creamed tuna on rice, toast, crackers . . . - Yum!

[ In Reply To ..]
Creamed tuna on rice is still a family favorite, passed down now to my 20 year old daughter. If I don't have time for rice I'll do toast or even crackers! We have it probably two or three times a month even now!
Could I get this recipe - for creamed tuna on rice
[ In Reply To ..]
I never had it before and want to try it now.

Thank you.
Just put the creamed tuna over rice - Nothing different
[ In Reply To ..]
Just make creamed tuna and put it on rice instead of toast.

I use a can of tuna lpacked in oil), a can of cream of mushroom soup (do not dilute), and a handful of frozen green peas or frozed diced mixed vegetables. A splash of Tabasco improves it. Mix, heat, and eat.

Works for creamed chipped beef, creamed chicken (you can use cream of chicken soup), or salmon. If you know how to make white sauce, you can use that instead of the soup.

This is also the same concoction that goes into tuna noodle casserole.

cornbread in a cold glass of buttermilk - NM

When I read your post it brought back a lot of memories when I used to make the things you mentioned, and even have my mom's old recipes. I will look through those and some of mine and see what I can find and post them.

weinies and dumplings.... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
broiled peanut butter sandwiches with bacon on top; creamed peas on toast. I guess you would call these depression era recipes when food and money was scarce. Tummy fillers, basically. Not much nutrition.

Heinz beans. Can't remember if we... - Bindi

[ In Reply To ..]
put it on toast but I do remember that little chunk of fat (?) that came with it.

Lima bean loaf - Trampled underfoot

[ In Reply To ..]
I've never had it, but saw someone nostalgically requesting a recipe for it once and had to look it up. It used lima beans, carrots and peanut butter! I told my husband I was thinking of making one and he said, "Why? It sounds awful!" and I had to agree. Still, I found the recipe intriguing....

Discarded recipes - greyhound mom

[ In Reply To ..]
When I was growing up we ate a lot of different things. We used to eat macaroni with cottage cheese instead of the regular cheese. Also we used to eat lard sandwiches on rye bread. Another thing was duck blood soup (delicious) and also tripe soup. When I got older, every Tuesday, my girlfriend and I would go visit her aunts and uncles and would eat raw hamburger sandwiches (delicious). Would not attempt that now. My father in law used to eat cottage cheese with Tang poured over the top.

Liverwurst sandwiches... - Bindi

[ In Reply To ..]
I actually have always liked liverwurst; just don't want to think about what's really in it. It's an excellent tool to hide a pill in if you have to medicate a dog. My cocker spaniel LOVES it.

Lima Bean Loaf - greyhound mom

[ In Reply To ..]
The Lima Bean Loaf sounded interesting. There are quite a few recipes for that. I found one with the peanut butter, but it as bacon fat as one of the ingredients. I think I might try it. I found it on this web site receipeCurio.com. That website has a lot of other interesting recipes.

Share Pea Soup RecipesOct 13, 2014
I'd like to share my pea soup recipe, and would like other ideas as well. I don't measure things, so just use your own judgment, likes/dislikes. Use a very heavy pot like an enamel pot or dutch oven. First, I take some olive oil, heat it, then sautee up some chopped garlic, onions, celery and carrots. I remove them from the pan when they're done, add a little more olive oil, then brown up a ham steak really well. Let the bottom of the pot get brown. (You can cube the ham steak ...

Anyone Have Any Good Veggie Recipes To ShareJul 15, 2010

Canned Frosting Fudge Recipes (see Message)Nov 22, 2010
