Kid Friendly Recipes
Posted: Jan 19, 2011
Do any of you have any fast and healthy "kid friendly" dinner recipes? My son has sports activities most week nights. I hate having to fix him a quick chicken patty sandwich on our way out the door but he's starving by the time we get home if he doesn't eat something prior.

Brown 1 pound of beef (or turkey) and drain.
Add 1 can of tomato soup.
Add 1 can of drained veggies (my kids will only eat corn).
Add 1 can of cream soup (mushroom or celery).
Add spices to your taste (garlic, pepper, etc.)
While I'm browning the beef, I warm up some frozen rolls in the oven or bake some refrigerator rolls. This takes about 15 minutes to put it on the table.
Add a salad if you like and you're the awesome mom!! Who knows - someday they might even WANT to help with the dishes!

If your child has the dexterity to engage in all those sports activities, he shoud have the dexterity and will to fix something for himself. Your job as a parent is to teach your children how to do things for themselves, not be a maid and short-order cook for them. I am assuming this child is at least past 12? Not trying to be hateful here, I just see so many young people who cannot do anything but play.

My son has Jiu-Jitsu twice a week and we live so far out that it ends up being past 8 when we get home, which is past his bed time. He is only 4 and cannot fix dinner for himself. I will try some of the ideas post here, too!

No - he's not at least 12. He is 9 and I won't even let him use the microwave yet without my assistance - not to mention I'm trying to get away from just zapping quick meals.

Well, I agree to a point about kids being self sufficient. Mine is 10 and she gets her own breakfast and lunch when she is home. Call me old fashioned, but I don't think kids need to cook their own dinner. I like to sit at the table for dinner with my kids - even if it's just for a quick dinner - and I wouldn't expect them to cook it. Clearing the table and doing the dishes, however, is a totally different thing, and kids should be expected to clean up.

Do you have a crockpot? That's been a huge time saver for me. One of the kid's favorite is crockpot chicken.
I put some chicken breasts in the pot and add 2 cans of soup - 1 can of cream of celery and 1 can of cream of chicken. I use the low-salt soups. Of course, you could use any soup you want or have on hand. Cook for about 6 hours.
About 20 or 30 minutes before you're ready to serve, tear some refrigerator biscuits in small pieces and add to the pot to make "dumplings."
When I don't have biscuits on hand, I serve it over rice or egg noodles.
This sounds wonderful - thank you! - Silly Girl

I hadn't thought about crockpot recipes. I'm going to dig mine out of the cupboard this weekend.
Quick tuna casserole - sm - ChiaPet

Cook 2 cups dry macaroni; drain 1 can tuna and place in microwave safe 9X9 casserole dish while pasta is cooking. Add 1 can cream of mushroom soup; mix with tuna and add 1/2 tsp garlic salt and sprinkle of pepper. Drain macaroni and stir into tuna/soup mixture. Cover top with grated cheddar or american cheese (or use slices). Cover and microwave for 10 minutes; let sit for 10 minutes, serve. Everyone loves this. You can add a can of peas to the mix if your kids like that.

Silly Girl - Kid Friendly Jan 26, 2011Silly Girl - I was wondering if you tried your crockpot yet. What did you make? Did it save some time for you and your son?
I've never done it myself, but I know people who actually put the crockpot together the night before and stick in the frig until the morning when they go to work so they can cut some time in the morning.
I've even heard of people making breakfast (like oatmeal) by setting it up at night and then have breakfast ready in the morning. ...

Sad Week - One Of Our Friendly Neighborhood Cats Is GoneAug 26, 2015We live in a neighborhood and a lot of cats come and go through our yard. For the past 4 years or so a neighbors cat has been a constant visitor. During the cold winter nights she would come over and sleep in the boxes with blankets and an outdoor pet heating pad. She also would eat here too when she was not at her own place. Actually all of our neighbors take care of all of the cats so that none ever go hungry or don't have a place to get out of the cold. So f ...
Looking For Diabetes Friendly Thanksgiving Side Dish Nov 17, 2011minimize holiday carb overload. I was diagnosed with early type 2 at the end of July and so far have lost 35 pounds from my top weight which puts me at about the halfway mark toward end goal. So far, this has helped stabilize the blood glucose and allowed t ...
Can Climate Science Be Rendered Conservative-Friendly?Aug 23, 2013Proponents say messages could be framed to better appeal to basic instincts. As in, "Climate denier, climate denier, fly away home. Your house is on fire and your children all alone." But pointing out the very serious national security dangers surprisingly just made them angry and dismissive.

First, I take some olive oil, heat it, then sautee up some chopped garlic, onions, celery and carrots. I remove them from the pan when they're done, add a little more olive oil, then brown up a ham steak really well. Let the bottom of the pot get brown. (You can cube the ham steak ...
