I won't make it. I'm on unemployment and only get 168 a week (without taxes being taken out). And I cannot find a job. I'm 61 and my last Tier ends in March. I have nothing to live on until June when I can retire on my 800 a month social security, if it's even that much.
Am I supposed to think that government overspending is a good thing? People are being forced to work part time and the people that make alot more money than I do will be forced to pay more for their insurance with this ridiculous healthcare plan than they did with their own insurance. My EBT card that I was forced to get to survive
is the only thing keeping me alive right now. And the democrats and people who love Obama make me sick to my stomach because they have no idea what agony is. These few democrats that stick up for Obama are probably people that have full time jobs still.

You understand Republicans want to defund ALL "entitlements" - wheres_my_job
[ In Reply To ..]
You need to think a little more carefully about what the actually intentions are of the Republicans - NO SAFETY NET - let private charity and families provide the safety net. It's all on the individual, get out your bootstraps, etc.
You do understand Republicans want to change Social Security into "stock market roulette," so everybody invests that money, Wall Street makes $$$$, and if there's a crash (gosh, who'd think that would happen? Oh yeah, it HAS and WILL AGAIN), then all those senior citizens are SCREWED. What do you think it was like in the US, before Roosevelt and the New Deal?

And this poor woman above who is on food stamps and unemployment and despairing because it won't be extended is most turned around of all. Conservatives don't have anything to offer you and do not want to help you, ma'am. Fact is, every program you are on is something that the liberals you condemn fought tooth and nail to provide.

The Government should be neither a charity or a safety net. I should be able to invest MY social security money as I see fit -- not pass it off to the feds to line their pockets.

Here's a definition of balanced portfolio to get you started: an investment portfolio that holds a mix of different types of investments, such as bonds, shares in companies, and mutual funds.
FYI: Bonds and mutual funds are low risk investments. A CD (certificate of deposit) is another low risk investment one can put their money into if they are afraid of risk. A person does not have to put money in the stock market if they don't want to. In my individual circumstance, I have at least another 30 some years left to work and can afford market risk. I need it actually, if I want to grow enough capital to even have a retirement. I think I should have the right to take back my ss money and invest it on my own terms.
On top of that, if I depend completely on the government for my retirement, guess what? I'm "gonna starve" anyway. There will be no social security for myself or my husband. The SS trust is empty and has been for years. Not only did our supposed representatives borrow against it (aka steal from it), it was and is the biggest ponzi scheme ever invented.
There's a lot of information out about how social security really works and where the money really is... all you have to do is read. I have done a lot of research on this already. I think you might need to do the same before calling me laughable.
Here's a simple article for a start: http://www.forbes.com/sites/johntamny/2012/06/03/the-ugly-truth-about-social-security-is-revealed/
And a quote: "The money we pay into Social Security is not ours, meaning politicians can reduce or confiscate the dollars withheld from our paychecks as they see fit. They can also reduce our retirement by simply raising the retirement age"

Retirement savings and posting on this board are not mutually exclusive -- not sure why you would think they are.
Plus, the hardest part is starting the accounts. Once that's done, put your deposits on auto transfer and be done with it. I can sit back and watch my money grow. I only spend about 15 minutes a month checking on my allotments to make sure I'm still balanced. So, as you can see, I have time available to post -- which I will continue to do so either ignore me or contribute something of value to the conversation.
I come here and post this info because I think it might be helpful to others. My husband and I dug ourselves out of over 20K of CC debt we both amassed in our 20s. We're now in our 30s. It's never too late to save and it sure is never too late to plan. We're lucky in that we have more time than some, but like I said, it's never too late. A little bit is better than nothing, imo, and I hope that perhaps my commentary might inspire someone in a similar situation.
Make fun of me all you want. Maybe it makes you feel better. I can only send good intentions your way in the hope that you might learn to help yourself instead of trying to tear down people like me whilst waiting for the government to save you.
Having 2 million dollars and being all upset about government programs? Weird - wheres_my_job

What I said was I think I should be able to control my own ss money and not have to send it to the gov. Do I think people in their 50s and 60s should have their ss money taken away right now, at this point? No, I don't. But I do think changes need to be made to better help the people in my age bracket.
I don't have 2 mil now, but I am on track to have that by the time I'm 50.
I do resent people who scam the system -- people who take and take and take and get something for nothing off the backs of those who work hard and are trying to provide for themselves and their kids. They're out there, and there's a lot of them. I am, unfortunately, related to people of that ilk, so I do know what I'm talking about.
But whatever -- I'm better off debating this with a wall, I know.

I only hope once all the dust is settled that people will see once and for all that the insurance most will be buying into will in the long run be an excellent idea. Hopefully all the catastrophic illnesses/accidents in the past will be just that, in the past and people will not have to sell their firstborn in order to survive.
Insurance used to be a service you purchased IN CASE you get sick, s/m - I am informed
[ In Reply To ..]
if a company has to cover a pre-existing illnesses, that's welfare, that's not insurance. They used to cover you but you would be considered high risk.
So what will happen is others will pay the price by way of higher premiums and high deductibles.

hospital bills are already jacked up to cover everything. Health care is big business in US. It's not like that in other countries that have good universal health care, as a HUMAN RIGHT.
Sure Obamacare has problems...but MOSTLY BECAUSE IT'S NOT A SINGLE-PAYER UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE PLAN, LIKE OTHER RATIONAL COUNTRIES HAVE.
Sorry for all caps. Sick of all the nonsense surrounding Obamacare.
A right is a thing that exits by nature, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. - MT52
[ In Reply To ..]
not entitlements to things produced by others. These two concepts of rights clash and the government must infringe on some citizen’s natural rights to liberty and property to grant benefits to other citizens and, in doing so, making the beneficiaries dependent on government.
Health care is a product to be sold in the - open free market.
[ In Reply To ..]
You may have a right to access it, but not for someone else to pay for it. Again, a fundamental difference in thinking.
Whenever I hear someone say health care is a right, I ask them if that means that the Federal Government must supply everyone in the country with an arsenal and require training in a militia because of the 2nd Amendment provides a Right to Bear Arms. Millions of people are without guns in America today, so obviously we need a government system to provide them via subsidy.
We ALL pay for it - wheres_my_job
[ In Reply To ..]
Crazy arguments about guns, when we're talking about health care.
I've heard idiots say they'd rather die of a disease, if they couldn't pay for the cure, rather than have universal single-payer health care for all.
The whole point of keeping people healthy is so they can stay productive, and NOT be dependent on government. Good grief. It's simple logic. And you don't even have to bring up guns.
You missed the point entirely. The point was the 2nd amendment is about - rights. It was chosen randomly.

If guns are a right should they be subsidized, in comparison to health care being a "right" and subsidized.

"entitlements to THINGS produced by others?" that's not exactly a coherent argument...I mean, corporations have entitlement to PROFITS PRODUCED BY OTHERS...this is the Marxist analysis of economic relationship between management/owners and workers. The owners take the profits produced by workers.
So by your reasoning, all companies ought to be run by the workers. That's not what you mean, is it? :)

Plan limits how much you pay in the event of a significant illness. (sm) - Taking The Bull By The Horns
[ In Reply To ..]
There is an annual out-of-pocket max of roughly $6K per individual and $12K per family.
It also does away with lifetime ceilings where the insurance company says we've already paid a million out on you (over your lifetime, not just one event) so you're responsible for this whole bill now. That happened to a coworker of mine who had twin premies. Her portion after insurance paid was over $500,000. Under Obamacare, that will no longer happen.
Out of pocket - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
You might want to double check that... I believe those limits are specifically for the lowest cost plan, but there are other issues involved as well.
Here's a c/p: full article linked below
It’s true that you wouldn’t have to mortgage your house and lose everything since you’re insured. But just as with auto insurance if you get in an accident, different policies have different deductibles. If you gambled and bought the cheapest bronze insurance, for example, you may have to cover the first $2,000 of any hospital bill before your insurance starts covering some of the costs. After that, you still pay a share of the bills until you hit the “out of pocket maximum.” Obamacare limited that to $6,350—above and beyond what you pay in premiums—but then delayed that maximum. (This is why the cheapest policies may not be the best.)
Worse, some insurance policies may recommend a hospital, but not all the doctors in that hospital may participate in the insurance network. So you can get in the weird situation where you go to an in-network hospital for a complex medical problem, but the specialists (like pathologists) who treat you but don’t participate in the network. Bam!—You’re stuck with their huge bills with no help from your insurer since the doctors are “out of network.” (This is the case for many current insurance policies as well and is not a direct consequence of Obamacare.) Worst of all, Obamacare imposes no limit on charges from out-of-network doctors, so you could still lose your house.
Bottom line: Over time, further regulations may fill in these gaps. For now, be very careful when you buy your plan—and be sure to understand the benefits.

I was on here constantly asking about coupon sites, how to cut costs, etc. I was cutting every single "luxury" item I had, with the term "luxury" meaning cable, cell phones, even the groceries we liked at times. I FINALLY gave up the nonsense and went out and got me a REAL JOB and I have never been happier! It was always hard for me to do it, because I would ration the fact that I still made $20 or more at my MT job, BUT I only had work for a couple of hours per day and some days no work, no word from my MTSO, nothing. I took a doctor's office job, working up front as a receptionist and while the pay isn't outstanding, I get a steady paycheck every two weeks, no matter what. Never, ever do I go to work and they send me home due to no work and no explanation. I have found that even though I don't make $20 per hour, I feel almost like I am rolling in money at this point, after spending so many years pinching pennies and praying from day to day that I had work.
I would encourage ALL MTs to stop putting up with the MT "mind games" and get out and find steady employment and the reward of that is priceless.

but unfortunately think there would be a mutiny here if I cut the satellite TV (and I need the internet for work)....lol. I did get change the home phone from Verizon to Straight Talk home, bill went from $70 to $15, now Wal-mart has another one called "Basic Talk" that is only $10 so need to look into that. I just got notice of one of my cc being "reinstated" after it was cancelled a few years back by them as I was on a hardship plan and having trouble paying (not that I plan to ever use that card again they royally screwed me on interest and would not work with me anymore though I was paying it regularly and on time, so got the loan at 10% interest so I could pay the vultures off -- Discover Card--I would pay $250 a month and about $230 of it was interest, plus the card I do have expired in August anyway, guess I'd better make sure they did not send me a new card and someone stole it, that is all I need). But I paid off the bill in January 2013 after I was able to get a personal loan that paid off all but one of my cards (paying that back via a payment plan with the card holder with no interest, cannot beat that deal....only 14 more payments to go). There is light at the end of the tunnel for me, it is doable, had $90K cc debt, down to $30K now with the loan and remaining cc debt, took five years to pay off the $60K, should be clear in less than 3 years now. Been rough but you can do it. My credit score bounces between 750-800 now as they can see I have worked hard to repair it and I do make a couple current purchases now and then using credit and then pay off immediately so they can see I can do it and to help repair my score. So just wanted to let you know it can be done....I feel so much better for taking control of it and not having this implode on me, luckiy my DH stood by me thru this mess (of my making for the most part) and I have definitely learned my lesson. We pay cash for most everything now, the only card that get used with any regularity is his AE card which I pay off promptly each month.
If you have to use one of those consolidation services. I did look into that, but at the time I had set up better "deals" on my own with the cc companies (like the one that agreed to let me pay off the balance interest free, was thrilled about that, win-win, they get there money so they are happy, and I am not dragged over the coals and paying an extra $10K in interest). Make some calls and see who will work with you though, ask for the hardship department and see what you can do. Good luck!
thank you so much for your post!! very inspiring - did look into consolidation
[ In Reply To ..]
they wanted over $850 a month and yes that paid everything but that's more than my mortgage and they even wanted it drafted automatically. So i decided that might not be the best option for us. If something happened i could always skip a CC payment even though it is detrimental to my credit (would rather feed my family than make a cc payment) but that $850 comes out of my account for 4 years no matter what so I had to pass
I do like your idea, i need to call and ask about hardship programs. Thank you!!
Any plan you set up will require autopay though - sm - IndebtMT
[ In Reply To ..]
that is how they "guarantee" payment, and if the funds are not there when they go to get it then you are bounced from the program you set up. I always made sure the money was there as I usually had good deals with the cc companies, did this with 3 cards, Discover did give me a great one once, it was interest-free, they would make me pay the interest then credit it back to my account so I would get the whole amount against the principle, kind of screwy but once a year was up they kicked me from it and would not give me another one though I did try several times (said I had to wait a year, but even then they wouldn't let me back in). Knew I would never get it paid off, least not for 10+ years, unless I took out a loan, luckily found a credit union that approved me for an unsecured loan, did a 4-year, though will probably pay it back faster, will see, but for now they get $400 a month and it freed up $300 a month for me, huge help. I have worked like a nut to pay off the debt though, 3 jobs, make about $32K a year so about a 1/3 goes to the debt. Cannot wait until I can slow down, but I can see the light and boy it does feel good!
Very proud of you, too! (sm) - Taking The Bull By The Horns

I am very proud of you for digging deep and sticking with it. This is a major accomplishment!
I, too, dug myself out of a big mess of my own making. Took me years and in the beginning I worked two jobs. I followed the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace plan and listened to his show on the radio, and it was (is) a life changer. I remember very early on him saying that there comes a time when you have to draw a line in the sand and say, "No matter what it takes, I am not living like this any more." Very hard work but also very satisfying in the end.
To the person who looked into debt consolidation below: Dave Ramsey does not recommend it (and, FWIW, neither do I ... went down that route before). His way of paying off your debt from smallest to largest and living on the envelope system like Grandma did truly does work.
