Have TV through one place but hear satellite TV

My contract will soon be up with provider at end of this month. I hear others saying they have all channels, local and others without the cable, satellite and would like input on how this is done. My bill at the present time is a little over $100.00 per month and would like to get that reduced if I knew how. ;

[ In Reply To ..]I never watched much TV -- the Weather Channel was about it, once or twice a year -- so I gave mine away and never replaced it. When I do see TV in waiting rooms and others' homes, most of what is on seems really lame.
I am glad to hear I am saving $100 a month! I spend a lot less than that on books!

[ In Reply To ..]what is available to watch. Personally I have perfected the art of the binge watch TV series. I don't know how I could ever go back to watching weekly television shows again. I'm watching Revolution on Netflix right now while working on my PC. But we also have Xbox 360/Xbox One consoles to watch Netflix on regular TV screen. They do have movies but i'm not really a big movie person.
Hulu is more up to date. When Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show were on air I would watch both of them the next day. It's good if you want to stay current. Netflix has shows that have been off the air for a while. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. I had never seen the XFiles and had a lot of fun watching all 9 seasons. it would have cost me a fortune to buy all of those on DVD but only $7.99 a month to watch it on Netflix! No contracts with either one, no commitments. I think you will like it!
p.s. My brother and I share Hulu. if you know someone else - that wants to share it with you

[ In Reply To ..]I got rid of cable a couple of years ago and got a Roku streaming player, I stream TV with my wi-fi DSL connection. I think Netflix is a great deal for $7.99 and no ads. I've watched several series (House of Cards, Mad Men) and they add movies and documentaries fairly regularly. I can stream PBS and some news. There are a lot of choices with Roku, some of them free, some requiring a subscription. I can stream Netflix to both TVs in my house, my desktop computer and my I-Pad. I'm saving a bundle and will never go back to cable.

[ In Reply To ..]Hulu and Netflix are 2 different services that offer movies and TV shows but no sports AFAIK. To get ESPN you would need to find a way to stream it over the Internet. It's on Roku but it's a paid subscription.

[ In Reply To ..]When it comes to cutting the cable/satellite cord, there are a number of ways to do it. If you Google the phrase "cut the cable cord" (with the quotes) you'll find lots of articles discussing the various options. I suggest you use the Google date filter to limit your results to the more recent ones - say, the last year - because things are always changing in this arena.
One thing you really need to do before taking any actions is to sit down and analyze what kind of watching you and your family like to do, because what you're going to be doing is putting together a package of free/subscription services that offer different kinds of programming. Think of it as being the CEO of your own cable company and deciding what you're going to offer your "public".

Second, all TV stations are required to broadcast a digital signal by FCC regulations, so you can receive local TV station programs totally free simply by connecting an inexpensive HDTV antenna to your TV. There are both inside and outside antennas, and of course (just like "old TV") reception depends on your proximity to the station. If you're anywhere within 25 to, say, 40 miles, of a city with TV stations you should be able to pick up one or more channels. Usually, the people at a local Walmart, Best Buy, Radio Shack or other stores that sell these antennas can tell you what sort of reception to expect, but if you can even pick up one regular TV channel that would take care of certain needs such as local news, especially in emergencies, or when the Interwebs goes down. Everyone should have an HDTV antenna installed on one TV for this purpose even if they have cable or satellite. It's cheap insurance for a few bucks.

We have now been with the satellite place for 2 years, contract ending the end of this month. I'd start by picking up an HDTV antenna, see what channels - you can get that way...

I got it for the guest room and my ex is thinking of getting rid of directtv and using it too because he can put You Tube on it and watch all his old shows that way. Worth a try. In less than one month you already get the money back for buying it by not having cable or satellite. Good luck to you.

[ In Reply To ..]I'm not too familiar with TV options. I looked into this because I want sports in the fall. I just signed up for Sling and bought Roku from them half price. I will get ESPN for fall football and also CNN. I was really missing the national news network, although I have been getting the local news with my antenna. I do not have Roku and this deal allowed me to buy it half price from Sling. I'm still really missing some channels from cable. Will wait and see if somehow I can get these in the future. For now I will pay $20.00 per month for Sling TV. I do have an antenna also for my second TV. I get local news, local PBS, oldies 1950s/1960s TV, which I like a lot. But for $20.00/month, I will get ESPN sports and national news and other channels such as TNT, HGTV, and others.
