Has anyone here used a check-printing service?

I recently started helping an elderly friend keep up with his bills. He has no computer and prefers mailing checks. It will cost almost $50 bucks for a refill packet of, I believe, 150 checks from his bank. Has anyone used a check-printing service that charges less? I have seen ads for these services but since they will get his bank acct info, I am being extremely careful. Check-printing software is a thought, but I tend to waste a lot of ink and paper getting printing jobs right. Any other ideas would be appreciated. ;

Just did this:
Carousel checks - looks like $9 will get you a box of "plain Jane" checks -ground shipping--I never go for the "secure" extra charge. I don't know how many in a box (200?).

If you are concerned, order them from Sam's or Walmart. Current is reputable, too--they are that paper goods catalog.

They come in the mail the same way bank checks do, too.

in the inserts in the Sunday paper. It is the best deal, and you can get him a really good deal if you order the 4 boxes, but be sure to use the ones that do not charge any shipping or handling. As far as them being safe, they have to be. I used to work data entry inputting that information for one of the major check printing companies years ago. Our error percentage that we had to meet or exceed was something like 0.8%. If errors are made, they get sued in federal court. Every order was triple checked before it left the plant. All that stationery was locked in a safe before we left the plant at night. The number of checks you actually get depends on whether you get duplicate checks (the ones that have the carbon copy that stays in the book). I think the duplicates you get 150 and the other you get 200(per box). This is the way I have ordered checks for the last 15 years. For what the bank charges for one box, you can get four boxes this way. Just remember to compare them so you find the ones that do not charge the shipping and handling. HTH

I knew I could count on this forum for advice! Thanks. Learned quite a bit, and now we feel better about ordering from an outside company. Never knew how high the standards are for these kinds of companies.

I liked that they were printed on recycled paper. I never pay full price. They often have a deal for first time orders and then when I need more (which could be years from now), I will just watch my email for offers.

As far as the safety of them having the bank account information, I feel that is something that anybody you write a check to has anyway. One has to keep track of their account if you use checks or debit cards, no matter what.

That is a very good point, anon. People are super careful about their checking account number but fail to realize that every time you write a check the recipient now has your account number, routing number, and likely home address and possibly your phone number. I used to be a bank teller and people would get mad if their account number was on something, but they would be the ones with check numbers in the thousands, meaning they've gone through a lot of checks and handed out that number plenty!

I just wanted to share this with everyone as I think it is so awesome. My church had a Christmas Eve service last night. We sang carols, the old ones. Now my church is small and our choir during the year has at best 20 members. A lot of people came in for the holidays to spend with their families and some of them joined our choir for the service which raised it up to about 30 members, more or less. Last night I was watching TV when I discovered that my half my channels no longer worked.
