Would you let your 16yo daughter get her belly button pierced?

Posted: Jan 30, 2017

My daughter has asked me if she can get her belly button pierced.  I don't think it is a big deal.  I appreciate the fact that she asked me as one of her friends as a piercing "kit" and tried to talk my daughter into letting her do it over the weekend.  So she could have done it without asking me.  I called and made an appointment at a reputable tattoo/body art place who require parental consent, forms signed, ID's, etc.

She decided to mention it to her father (we're divorced) and he threw a fit.  Called me up in a drunken stupor to rant and rave about letting our daughter defile her body and that only "sluts" get body piercings and tattoos.  I have custody of our daughter, but she can see her dad anytime she wants.  He doesn't ever get to make decisions about anything to do with our daughter, but he is in her life.

I thought I would ask some other moms and see what they think.  I don't really see anything wrong with it and like I said, she asked my permission when she could have done it without me knowing and hid until the summer months, LOL.  I personally don't have tattoos and only have my ears pierced once, but I really think it's cute and not trampy to have a belly button piercing.

So yea or nay?  Is my ex being crazy as usual?

If you have custody and she asked your permission, that's that! I let my daughters get tattoos and the oldest get her belly button pierced. If you don't let them at a reputable facility, they will either do it behind your back and run the risk of infections, hepatitis, etc., or will do it when they turn 18 and have the right to make their own decisions.

I don't agree with all the tatoos and piercings my daughters have gotten/are getting (and they want MORE), but they're old enough to make their own decisions and they pay for them and any consequences, not me. I was going to get one, but chickened out (years ago) and really like some of them, but I don't have the money or the time, so I'll just look at them!

They have really cute belly button jewelry, so have fun!!!

Everyone is different and everyone parents their children differently. My oldest daughter had to wait until she was 18 before she had any piercings (other than ears) and to get any tattoos. She didn't seem to have a problem with it. Whatever you decide to do, I would definitely take her to a reputable tattoo parlor who specializes in piercings and definitely do not let her friend do it at home.

'Yea' from me. Definitely go to the tattoo parlor since everything is sterile and they know what they're doing. It's shockingly painful and will be tender for a few weeks, but the jewelry is really cute!!

Sorry your ex is having such a hard time with it.

I say nah - old-fashioned mom

I keep hearing over and over about how the ability to judge consequences of one's behavior is not fully developed until about the age of 25.

I hear my 13 yo daughter say she wants this and she wants that now, but I know she is not ready for the things she asks for.

Part of being a responsible parent is the ability to encourage the child's thinking about the future. If a child gets what they want when they want it, we are doing them a disservice in getting them to fully consider all the pros and cons of a decision.

In the state where I live, a professional cannot pierce or tattoo my underage child without my consent. If my child wants it, she can earn and save her money for when she does not need my legal consent. If she goes behind my back, then our problems are much deeper than just whether a piercing is okay or not.

While I don't think the world would not come to an end if she were to get a tattoo, I wholeheartedly believe in teaching children the virtue of waiting for what they want. Not just tattooing, but sex, alcohol and other adult issues. Just like it might not hurt to get it now, it wouldn't hurt to wait, either.

I agree with you - another old fashioned mom

I also think it would be very healthy for your daughter's relationship with her father, and yours as well (even if he is a drunk) to respect his wishes on this, especially since he feels so strongly about it. Do you really want to negate him like this, even if he is a jerk?

Also, how can we, as knowledgeable medical people, considering the risks of infection, etc., in good conscience ever consider giving our consent for our minor child to undergo such a procedure?

I would probably have my daughter wait--sm - anon

I am not sure of the permanence of the piercing for the belly button, but for anything that is permanent, I would certainly have them wait until they older. I do think they can look cute but I am not even sure who would see it, other than the girls in the locker room (at least for my daughter).

My daughter is diabetic and so has no desire to invite more needles into her life so it is not an issue here.

Mine will have to wait until they're age of consent - sm

I do not approve of bellybutton piercings on children.

My daughter is 26 now, but when she was 16 she - begged for a belly button

ring and I let her do it. A few months ago, she asked me WHY I let her get one and says she wished I would have said NO. Go figure.

who loved chains, multiple piercings and those huge black knobs in the ear lobes. When they broke up, he hated all his drilled holes and asked for mom and dad to take him to a plastic surgeon to patch them up...particularly the huge holes in the drooping ear lobes.

I say wait too. The frontal lobe of the brain (the manager) isn't fully functional yet. Altho I do realize a belly button piercing is vastly different...

I don't think it's a huge deal - CMT

It's just one little piercing. Lots of teenage girls have it done. It's nothing more than a simple, small form of body art. While that type of piercing is not something that I was ever personally into at that age (I've only ever had my ears pierced), I don't see a problem with it at all. If she eventually decides that she doesn't want it anymore, all she has to do is take it out and the piercing will eventually close up. I say go for it. She showed a lot of maturity and respect for you by not just letting her friend do it like a lot of other kids would have done and coming to you first to ask for permission. It sure beats a giant tattoo that she would likely regret when she's older! Ignore your ex. Like you said, he was just wasted and blowing it WAY out of proportion. It's really not that big of a deal and he will just have to get over it.

Thanks to all who responded. You've given me a lot to consider. - LLN

I was leaning towards letting her do it when I found out that it costs $40 for the piercing at at least $10 for the jewelry plus apparently you're supposed to tip. so now we're up to at least $60 bucks! She needs to earn some money to pay for it herself cuz I don't have $60 to throw away on a piercing! I also pointed out to her that $60 would probably buy her a pretty nice outfit!

So this is all to be continued...

I Say Nay - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
I say nay. She's only 16. When she's 18--or better yet in her 20s, she gets to decide and she gets to pay for it. You are not her "buddy," you are her parent.

Honestly, the money thing shouldn't have been the deciding factor for you---the "buddy" thing should have been and you should let her know that.

Thanks for the common sense, though I realize it is - often scoffed at nowadays. nm

No, I wouldn't. In fact, if I could time travel, I'd redo a bunch of stuff and not even let her out of the house until she turned 18, and I would be hesitant to do even that.

Did You Have A Big Belly When PregnantFeb 03, 2010
I saw a girl who was 8 months pregnant but just had the tinest little pooch showing. I'll bet it was her first. And, of course, that last month can be a real killer for weight gain. I did that with DS#1, but had a HUGE belly with DS#2. My skin was stretched so tight I felt like if someone poked it with a pin, I'd go flying around the room like a balloon does when you let the air out. ...
