Hello all - my daughter will be starting college in the fall and we are in the process of trying to find financial aid.

Does anyone have info on how to get grants? Is there usually a family income max that would allow/disallow anyone from getting a grant? I know I will need to talk to the college's financial aid office but any info that can be passed along would be appreciated. We already completed the FAFSA and my daughter got a small loan through that, but she was not awarded any grant $. Thanks

and based on that information my son was awarded Pell grant and a state grant for the state in which we live. Yes, how much grant money you receive does depend on income. I would definitely check with the financial aid office and see if they can offer any more assistance.

I'm back in school to get out of MT. I was told that the vast majority of students at the community-technical college I attend are there on Pell grants--basically all of their tuition and books are paid for. I was also told that I would probably have no problem getting a grant as long as I have never taken out a student loan before, which I have not.

When I filled out my FAFSA, I was disappointed to see I was only "awarded" small student loans. It does depend on income/family income. It depends on if you are living with your parents, married, single, employed, unemployed, receiving unemployment or public assistance, how many children you are supporting. I am single with no children and have a job. It is easier to get a grant if you are unemployed and have children.

The financial aid office should be able to guide you through all avenues to find aid. If your daughter is going to a community-technical college, many of them have individual scholarships.

You might want to ask someone in the financial aid office if accepting a student loan now would affect the ability to qualify for grants in the future.

Unfortunately I see so many of these grants wasted. Students who are going to classes for free, not taking it seriously, dropping out right and left. It would be ideal if grants were awarded by another process other than simply plugging in your financial numbers and seeing which ones hit, like a lottery.
