Boy names?

Posted: Oct 19, 2009

My daughter and her husband cannot decide on a baby name (it's a boy), and the due date is just a couple weeks away.  Anyone care to share their favorites?

Thanks!  : )

IMHO - Don't get cutesy - Mom of 3 boys

Stay away from soap-opera names! Go with something classic that he won't have to spell for everyone the rest of his life. It may sound corny, but consider naming him after a grandfather or great-grandfather. A lot of the older names are making a comeback.

Just my opinion, of course.

Agree. Anything but Caleb, Tristan, Dylan, Hayden, etc... - sm

Every boy in my daughter's school is named that... In other words, don't go with the 'trendy name of the year' unless you want your kid to have the same name as everyone else. I like the idea of naming after a family member.

I dont know about now but my son's name is Tristan, although, we call him by his middle name Drake, and there are very few if any of either in his classes, he is 12 though.
My nephew is named Tristan too. He's almost - SM

13. Must've been a lot of pregnant Legends of the Fall fans, LOL. There are several Tristans in his grade, and there are a couple of girls named Tristan as well.
Tristan - AW
[ In Reply To ..]
Legends of the Fall..lol I get that all the time..did you name him for that...actually it was a childhood friend for me and I just always liked the name. I dont usually watch movies like that so I didnt even realize that it was a character and that it was played by Brad Pitt! Whom I was in love with until Angelina Jolie. LOL..that is funny that she gets that too

My son is Matthew Alexander and my daughter is Meredith Denet (accent mark over the second E and pronounced DeNay). I took their "later life" into consideration as well as "the nickname factor. One of my nieces carries my moms middle name, one of my nephews carries my dads first name, another niece carries my moms first name and another nephew carries my maiden name as his middle name -- I know confusing but HTH somewhat and BTW CONGRATULATIONS and I hope things go smoothly!!!

I so agree! - regular names

I am sooo tired of hearing cute and "unusual" names, or as you called them, "soap opera" names. My other pet peeve is "geography names", such as Dallas, Vegas, Cheyenne, etc. They really aren't unusual, since there are so many of them. Weird spellings of classic names, y's substituted for i's, etc. also annoy me. (I'm easily annoyed in my old age.) Meanwhile, the old standards like James, Joseph and John are rarely seen anymore. Cute names seem sweet on little ones, but they're just silly when pinned to an adult.

Our sons are Anthony and Patrick, ages 21 and 19. It surprised me that there were no other Anthonys or Patricks the entire time they were in school, though I think Anthony is making a comeback.

I love the name Anthony. I agree, I can't stand - SM

the trendy names and the idiotic spellings! When choosing a name for my daughter, I tried to picture her as a 50-year-old business woman trying to be taken seriously, so I absolutely didn't name her a silly trendy name. I named her Elizabeth after her great-grandmother. I guess nowdays, that would be spelled Alyssuhbethe, LOL....
As an MT, there's nothing more annoying than "trendy' - or "cute" name spellings. Steer clear!

not that it would have mattered. she named her children:

Ava
Alivia
Laila

gack. I actually like ava and olivia normally even though they are name-of-the-month (or year) names but everything combined is a bit much.

Actually my daughter, Meredith was named after a friend, Dennis -- I didnt like Denise and had gone to school with a Denet -- the nurse came in and said "Meredith Dennit" (her prouncication and I told her how Meris middle name was to be pronounced -- BTW -- my baby was in the Army during Desert Storm, graduated Summa Cum Laude from nursing school and 4 years ago, presented me with a beautiful grandbaby Ava Grace and Meri is 29 today!!!

Grandson's are named Pierce and Cyle. That's Cyle with a K sound. I told my daughter they would call him Sile for the rest of his life but she wouldn't listen. We love him to death anyways.

Simple, traditional: James, Scott, or Tom. -nm - Zircon

For all your ideas. They pretty much have hashed over all those. I think it is true that boy names are more difficult to come up with.

All names are kind of goofy if you really think about how they sound (traditional or not). : )

Nathan Michael, Christopher John, Paul William, Darren Allen, Vincent Patrick, Michael John, James Alexander.

All time worst name -- Amenorrhea - I kid you not

[ In Reply To ..]
I came across that one in a report many years ago. Even the doc couldn't get over it. He explained what it meant, but the mom had heard it somewhere, probably as a symptom when first pregnant, and she liked the way it sounded, and so she named her daughter that. I think there was an apostrophe inserted and the spelling changed slightly, but there it was.

I used to go to school with a girl named Regurgitation. When asked why her mother would do such a thing, she just explained that her mother was an addict and she was being raised by her grandmother. She preferred to be called Reggie and we obliged.

Funny name story - Maria

[ In Reply To ..]
When my oldest sister was 3, someone was talking about baby names and my sister blurted out, "Gonorrhea is a pretty name!" My mom was mortified and didn't know where she had ever heard that word. Lol! : )

Funny! - Mom of 3 boys

[ In Reply To ..]
Reminds me of I Love Lucy when she told Ricky she wanted a name that was unique and euphonious. He said fine, Unique if it's a girl and Euphonius if it's a boy.

Either one would be preferable over Amenorrhea or Regurgitation!

worst name - xyz

[ In Reply To ..]
That is dreadful. Reminds me of one I heard long, long ago where the mother had never before heard the word "vagina" and wanted that name for her new baby girl. The nurses were putting Virginia on the birth certificate instead.

I did business with a woman named Pocahontas a few years ago. She said her siblings were Sunshine and Moon. I asked how her parents came up with that and she said they were hippies. She said "you can just call me Pokey". Poor woman having to explain that every time she told someone her name!

Brothers are Andrew Lee, Kevin J. (as in Jack for his grandfather) Michael, and Jedidiah Claxton. The last one is horrible, I know. Good thing my dad never had another son or he would have named him Zebulon Buckingham.

I personally like Tucker, Tanner, and Jason. One that was brought up the other day was Bennet. I like that one. Alan is good for a middle name. I plan on that being my future son's middle name (grandfather's middle name).

Gabriel and Benjamin. - sally forth

My boys are Carson and Clayton. I hadn't seen a Carson besides Carson Daly and named him after Kit Carson, but now I see a bunch. A girl in my church is naming her son Carson in a few weeks--theif--LOL. Anyway, there are not many Claytons out there. Congratulations on the new grandbaby!!!

I'd say one is, one isn't - Mom of 3 boys

[ In Reply To ..]
Carson is definitely trendy. (I think all the last names that are now used as first names are trendy.) Clayton isn't trendy.

Pet Peeves About Names?Jul 23, 2010
I understand wanting to have a name that is different. My DD was born during the time when Jennifer was the most popular name. She ran around with a group of girls in her classroom that were called The Jennifers. I have to say that all four of my kids have names that were popular at the time, Jennifer, Kevin, Michael, and William. We didn't plan that, it just happened. And there are times that I wish they had names that weren't as common place, even though I really still like the names ...
