Love animals but do not know what to do

Posted: Mar 3, 2014

My neighbor recently has added to her pets, getting a new cat. I know her other cat, I have seen it sometimes on my patio but pretty much keeps to itself. The new cat runs to my door every time my husband comes home, really wants to come in, very sweet and affectionate. The other night I started out after 8 going to the store and the cat was extermely close to my garage, instead of being scared the cat was trying to go into the garage. When I first saw the cat I posted as to who it belonged to, at my door at night, cold outside and got a terse note on our neighborhood bulletin about the cat belonged to "your neighbor, it has a warm place in the garage and likes to be inside/outside cat." I live in an HOA. Animals are not supposed to be outside running around. If I said something to the manager in the neighborhood her response would be to call animal control.

What worries me is the fact I travel myself and do not want the responsibility of having to recheck each and every tme I leave my home. Sometimes I am gone the entire weekend. My husband does not do animals, ever. If he were to hear the cat in the garage I am certain he would open the garage for it to go out but he would not pick the animal up. With the note I received from the neighbor, I am not sure she is going to be receptive to my showing up at her door asking her to restrain her cat but certainly do not want to be looked at as a kittynapper. What to do?

I feel for you. Clearly, the cat is not being taken care of and the home owners' association doesn't permit this kind of thing.

Make the cat disappear. Either take it into your home, or bring it to a non-kill shelter/vet that will place him or her in a permanent, secure home, where s/he will be fed consistently and be loved.

I'd request the HOA .... - Rose

Sent the neighbor a notice that cats are to be kept indoors at night. It's dangerous to leave them out as this is when they are often hit by cars. The cat owner should know this and take care of her cat! It's very unfair to neighbors like you who like animals.

Another possibility is to look for a light activated frog that you could put near your garage that might scar the cat as it makes a noise when something passes by. There is a type of air freshener that is light activated made for bathroom that might work and be cheaper.

with the other poster about taking the cat to a no-kill shelter or vet. You could also look for a rescue in your area that might help.

Do you know if this cat has been spayed/neutered? If not, it's even more important to do something about it before there's a litter of unwanted kittens.

If you want the cat to stop coming around.... - without hurting it

You might say: go home and clap your hands. The next time, do it again and have a pail or container of a little water and, without hitting the cat, toss the water in its direction, as it moves out of your area, keep saying, go home, and it should get the point. Cats are not stupid. They know when they are not wanted around. They also know tones of voice and even recognize words such as, "come here" or "lay down." Just like they recognize their name. You might mention to the lady you are doing this. So she understands you don't want the cats around. Not everyone likes cats. Rather than create animosity with a neighbor, you might give this a shot. Cats are curious, follow smells, if it is cold, they may be going near a warm motor.

What I would do - see msg

I would somehow make sure the cat was spayed or neutered, and if it wasn't, find a way to have it done. This would be a disaster situation of more kitties were born out of this.

If the cat doesn't have a tag, and it's always at your house, there's nothing wrong (IMHO) in trying to find a home for it somehow. The woman it belongs to obviously doesn't give a hoot, and the cat knows it. Whatever you do, don't feed the cat. If you do, you now own a cat--it's a pet once you feed it, and getting animal control or a shelter to take it might be more difficult.

It's not your cat - Another cat lover

I understand that you are concerned but your neighbor needs to take responsibility. By all means, do not take someone else's pet to the shelter and don't pay to have it spayed/neutered! We are not talking about a stray/feral cat, we are talking about someone else's property. Do not feed it or show it any affection or it will never go home. Talk to your HOA and have them address it with the woman who owns the cat. She needs to keep her cat at home.

OP- thanks everyone. Just a few more items - about the cat.

I have no idea about whether it has been neutered or not, male cat but my cats are all fixed and all stay inside, they are not allowed out. I fed it the very first time I saw it here as I had no idea where it lived. It did not eat much, have not fed since. I found out about 2 days later when posting on the neighborhood postings it was next door's, new addition. When I am out of town I always have a standby vet's assistance in case of an emergency that will pick up any cat of mine and take in for treatment. The noise/light activator I know would not work as the cat tried its best to enter the garage the one night I went out around 8. I backed my car out and then saw the cat right at the door starting in. I hurriedly closed the door down thus preventing its entry that time. Had I not been looking, cat in garage. I absolutely do not want to leave for the weekend and run the risk of leaving it there. As far as the water idea, my husband travels and comes in all hours, day or night and the water sounds good in theory but I am not always right there when he gets home. I do have a neighbor not too far from my house who has offered, knowing about this particular cat, to post saying the cat was trying to come into her garage of a night to see if this would help jog the person next door to take notice. I have now sent a note to the HOA manager here in the neighborhood, tried before but this time I told her the cat was trying to enter both my home and my garage and I thought the HOA should sent a letter because if I approached neighbor, called animal control, then would cause hostility between the 2 neighbors. I appreciate everyone's ideas and will give follow up when I get one. I forgot about the spray idea thing and the water sounds pretty good also but I really should have the backing of the people where I live so am trying there, again, first.

did that note come from the neighbor, or a 3rd party? - nm

[ In Reply To ..]

OP- that note came from the neighbor - herself, not third party

[ In Reply To ..]
I have been told by the HOA to video tape the cat trying to enter the house/garage which should not be hard to do as it does it most days. Also told to contact animal control as they personally will contact the owner to advise them their animals cannot be running around and causing concern for others, i.e. the most pressing would be the medical issue with my husband.

there's a medical issue? - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
It is concerning my husband and his medical - issue, not with the cat
[ In Reply To ..]
He will not interact with any animal. Husband has diabetes and does not run the risk of being scratched and having a non-healing wound. That is the medical issue I spoke of, just did not elaborate on it.
I see what you mean; you're right - sm

This brings up another thought for me. If these people are not taking care of the cat appropriately, it may not have its shots. This could pose a danger to those who come in contact with the cat should the cat get in a scrape with a rabid animal such as a bat, raccoon, possum, etc.

If that cat doesn't have its shots and ends up in a street fight, the cat will have to be put down.

Of course, if the cat is not neutered the community will run the risk of having litters of cats, none of whom are fixed, and none of whom have their shots.

It's granules and spray. It's made from several different hot peppers. Not harmful, just a repellent. The neighbor's dog decided to pee on my front door every morning and I tried vinegar, ammonia, even cayenne pepper. Nothing worked until I got these granules. The dog walked in them, had to lick them off its feet, also got some granules up its nose. It eventually got the idea when it came here and the granules were always in the yard and on the porch. Some dogs are dumber than others.... It also keeps the stray cats at bay and out of the bushes.

Re: Love Animals More Than PeopleNov 12, 2012
I feel kind of the same way. I fall to pieces when I see animals hurting, but it does not affect me as much when I see people hurting. If I see a story about animal abuse, I cannot bear to look at it or read about it, but I have a safe curiosity if it is about a person being abused. I'm not alone in feeling this way, and I think more people feel this way than let on. Those who say they care about people more than animals, or who are defiant in humans inherent value compared to anim ...

Tea Party Republicans Love Love Love Ted CruzOct 18, 2013
even among Republicans, according to a survey from Pew Research. But the group is still potent within the Republican Party — which means that Sen. Ted Cruz gets a bit of good news on an otherwise bleak day. "Tea Party" is a necessarily vague affiliation. There are members of Tea Party groups, of course, but Pew largely had to allow poll respondents to self identify. And a lot of Republicans did so. About four-in-ten (41%) Republicans and Republican leaners agree with the Tea Pa ...

Steiff Stuffed AnimalsMay 27, 2017
Hello, All- I've inherited about 30-40 Steiff stuffed animals. I do know they can be valuable, but am having trouble figuring out how to sell them to someone reputable. I am not interested in doing online auctions, but I am interested in at least finding out what they are worth. No matter what kind of Internet search I do, I end up going around in circles, some leading me to Ebay, others leading me to appraisal ads, yet others to Pintrest, telling me a lot of nothing. Travel Bans Used With Good Success To Control Outbreaks Of Diseases In AnimalsOct 17, 2014
