Pet peeves about names?

Posted: Jul 23, 2010

I understand wanting to have a name that is different. My DD was born during the time when Jennifer was the most popular name. She ran around with a group of girls in her classroom that were called The Jennifers. I have to say that all four of my kids have names that were popular at the time, Jennifer, Kevin, Michael, and William. We didn't plan that, it just happened. And there are times that I wish they had names that weren't as common place, even though I really still like the names. However, I can not understand giving a child a name that is so different it is on the weird side. I can not understand changing the spelling so much that people aren't sure how to say it, and will never be able to spell it.

My pet peeves with names are:

1. Giving a child a name that can cause ridicule from peers either because of the name or the initials from the names (Randall Allen Thompson, Felicia Ula Kendant)

2. Changing the spelling of the name from any of the usual spellings of the name, so the child will always have to spell the name for everyone and many times will have to pronounce it

3. Giving the child a name that is hard to know how to pronounce.

4. Giving the child 4 or five names

I'm I the only one with pet peeves about names?

So my DD's initials are RAT...Rachel Alyssa T...she never ever was teased in school about it. In fact, it kinda was her nickname.

I know where you are coming from, and at times it can get extreme, but I like seeing the different and new names people are coming up with these days. I am only in my 20's, but I graduated with 7 Jake's (one being my brother) and 7 or 8 Ashleys. Everyone of them had to have a nickname or was referred to as Jake N., W., R., S...etc. I always told myself that I wouldn't give my kids the most popular name of the year, not saying there is anything wrong with it. I now have two little boys, Caden and Corbin. When Cade was born in 2005 I thought I was picking a name that wasn't too crazy, but also not a name everyone would have....man was I wrong. We can't go anywhere without there being another blue eyed, blonde haired Caden, Kaden, Kayden, Caiden...you get the idea, running around. Now I have Corbin who is only 3 months old, and already I have ran into a few other Corbins.

To get back on track...I enjoy the new and unique names that are coming along, but i also agree that the crazy spellings and 4 or 5 names is a little silly...but, to each his own!

I always thought it was a wonderfully unique name. I named my youngest son Carson, thinking the same, but have come across 3 Carsons since. Oh well, what do you do. It turns out that my oldest, whose name I thought was more common place, has the more unique name with Clayton (at least for small children). My brother's name is Brass. When I see names that I don't really like, I always remind myself that I named my children and it is up to other people to name theirs. Why do we all need to be so judgmental?

C names are definitely popular! - JewelMT

It's funny how you start realizing names once you give them to your own children! I've probably encountered more Cadens and Corbins that I ever realized until now. I even know a girl who named her twin boys Caden and Corbin, and just found that out recently! Carson was also on our list, and we thought about Clayton, but I know a few myself...one at my boys daycare! Brass has to be a pretty unique one, can't say I've ever met a Brass! Names are unique and wonderful, and what fits one person may not fit another, but that's okay!

pregnant girl at the church I was attending told me that she liked his name so well that she was going to name her baby Carson. At first I was a little irritated, but then I thought that I probably can't get a better compliment and who am I to decide what she should or should not name her son? As far as Brass goes, I don't think I have ever met another, either, but there is the character on CSI who goes by Brass, which is his last name. I love my brother's name, but growing up, people had such a difficult time wrapping their heads around it. He got called Brad and Brock and all kinds of other names, when it is pretty easy to sound out.

I cringe when I read some of the birth announcements in our local paper. The crazy spellings just make me nuts. Someone I know has a son named Jason, but she spelled it so out of this world and now has a fit because no one knows how to spell it. We almost named our oldest son Tyler in 1987 - we thought it was really different. So glad we changed our mind about that right before he was born as our school district is over run with Tylers.

When I was in school, every other girl was named - LINDA or ROBIN. -nm

I'm a Robin and I used to hardly ever run into any of us - Happy MT Robin

I'm also 47. When I was younger I never ran into another Robin. Now I work with one at a part time job, I used to work with one at the hotel, and before I went back to work there, they had another Robin who left before I got there.

Just be glad we have choices. I was reading an article about names the other day and it talked about other countries who have very strict guidelines about naming. In Germany you have to be able to tell the gender of the child by the first name and Denmark has 7000 pre-approved names. If you want something else you have to go through the red tape. It was kind of interesting.

I don't like names for kids that are not appropriate for when you are older. I don't like the cutesy names that would sound funny in an older adult. I always, thankfully, loved my name. I told my mom that I loved my first, middle and last name. She said "Good. I'm glad I did SOMETHING right!" I don't know if Christine was a common name then .. don't think so. That is what I like. It was never too popular. I don't like when people spell it with a K! I like the traditional spelling.

Wanna be different now? - Go traditional

I was disturbed by this trend already, so in 94 I named my son George. Surrounded by "trendy" Dylans and Tylers, he's the only George in his school. Everyone knows how to spell it, nobody questions his gender, and no relatives could complain about a name shared with kings, presidents and celebrities, so everybody's happy.

There are many wonderful names that might not be currently "fashionable" that can be recycled without gender bending, creative spelling hassles, or having half the kids in your class share it. I named my kid after my grandpa. If you look in your extended family tree, I bet you can find something just right.

I also gave my sons traditional names. They were the only Patrick and Anthony in their classes. Patrick was named after his father, grandfather and great-grandfather. I really had no choice in that one! I was sure there would be Patricks in every class, but not a one all the way through high school. Traditional names have become the unusual ones.

Oh, and how about Nevaeh, Heaven spelled backwards? I REALLY hate that one, and I keep running into little girls about 5 or 6 named that. I hope that fad has died down.

I love my family names as well - but forget about Narcissa

[ In Reply To ..]
My gg-gm's name was Narcissa which was very popular in her day, but I could never use that name. OTOH, she had a brother whose name I love, Jeremiah Maston W... That was a handed-down family name.

I recently adopted my granddaughter and she got to choose her name. She kept her first name and then used my mother's middle and last name :)

My estranged SIL has moved on and has 3 children by other women, and the middle son is Natas....spell THAT one backwards. Poor kid! Thankfully he is in state custody so I hope someone will adopt him and change his name.

nevaeh - FAD!

[ In Reply To ..]
There are so many little Nevaehs running around these days! I was even reading somewhere online when I was looking for baby names that it was common to name baby girls Nevaeh Mai...I guess the middle name is supposed to be like Majia, Maya...however you wanna say it...but all together backwards it spells I am heaven. Sorry, but i'm sure most of those girls will grow up to be no angel...

I like traditional or old-fashioned as well - Sassy Pants

My name is Corey...and I'm a female! I was born a girl, I did not have a sex change or anything LOL. That is my name, not a nickname, and I hated it growing up. I always got mistaken for a boy (still do via junk mail) I would have traded any other girl in the world for her name...but now I love it. It makes me ME. People are usually like "oh, that's neat." Old men and little kids are usually the only ones who still say "Corey is a boy's name." And I just say, "No that's MY name." Usually shuts them up. LOL

I'm just happy I'm not Dakota Mercedes Apple...PUKE

Oh, and I was listening to a radio show a few years ago with callers calling in on stupid baby names. This one caller said her sister named her baby "ab cee dee" and spelled it Abcde...TRUE STORY!!!

Gift shop items with names will be relics soon - and bike license plates

[ In Reply To ..]
It used to bug me that I could find gift shop items (mugs, pens, notepads, etc.) with my given name (Sandra) but not my nickname (Sandi not with a y). Now most kids names are spelled so funky they'll never get to have anything off the rack with their name on it - how sad.

Being the bearer of a not-so-normal name - - NYMT

I've always had a love/hate relationship with my name. I shortened it down from Leanne to Lee when I became an adult, and yet when I see another Leanne in print (especially with the same spelling) I get, shall we say, territorial, like "Hey, that's MY name! You can't have it!" haha.

Sometimes I'll just sit and ponder it because it seems so strange to see it in print not connected to me! I'm glad, though, that I'm not Linda or Mary, or something else really common!
