The Happy Holidays vs. Merry Christmas deal

Posted: Dec 6, 2011

Ok, I'm a Christian. I'm not saying I'm perfect, quite the opposite. That being said, I am ok with "Happy Holidays" at this time of year. Why? Because we're in the season where there are several holidays!!!!

I'm not offended if someone says that to me, matter of fact, I'm pleased because they said something nice.

I was reading on Facebook the other day a "Don't take Christ out of Christmas" post from a Christian friend of mine and it sounded so dark and mean spirited....quite the opposite from what the point of being a Christian should be. I'll gladly take a warm "Happy Holidays" over a bitter "Merry Christmas" any day!

There, I feel better. I got that off my chest.

;

agree with you... - Happy Holidays!

Also agree with you - Yep

When I say it, it is meant as an all-encompassing expression. So, Happy Holidays everyone!

The War Against Christmas was manufactured - by a news organization

[ In Reply To ..]
It's the "fair and balanced" news organization that starts with the letter F.

They started this whole "war on Christmas" thing a couple of years ago as a way to drive ratings and since their viewership is primariy conservative Christians, it worked.

Their new thing now - and I am not kidding about this, having seen the 7 minute video - is the new Muppet Movie has a socialist agenda against big corporations and they are brain washing our children.

THANK YOU - sm

I didn't have time to respond to the OP when I first read this, but this is EXACTLY the reason for the "Keep the Christ in Christmas" thing.

A Fox News (as well as other right-wing propaganda machine talk radio/book hocker) marketing strategy is to keep their consumers (viewers/readers/listeners) isolated, angry, victimized, mistrustful of other media sources (that last one is the biggie), just to name a few. They do this by creating news (or just flat out conspiracy theories) where there isn't any... stories usually about some sort of "attack" on the viewer (War on Christmas, $16 muffin, attack on family values/marriage, SOCIALISM, blah, blah, blah). That keeps the consumer coming back for more and less likely to tune in elsewhere. Fox is the only place that's on their side and where they will be told the "truth," so why go anywhere else?

Yes, the latest Fox headline is that the Muppets, Happy Feet, and Cars are now promoting the oh-so-scary liberal agenda. Haaahahahahaha! That's a good one.

Anyway, to the OP, when dealing with your FB friend, just smile and wish them a Merry Christmas. I've found that debating with someone on the Fox side of the fence is pointless, and it's not going to change until there is competition for Fox which provides the consumer with a better product - TRUTHFUL AND ACCURATE reporting of real news and honest conservative commentary... not lies and made-up stories to boost ratings.

And yet, note that it's not the conservatives - complaining on this site, is it?

[ In Reply To ..]
Isn't that the isolated, angry and victimized pot calling the kettle black?

I remember my great grandfather complaining - about this, well before Fox News

[ In Reply To ..]
was the liberal scapegoat. This is not a new argument, nor is it manufactured by Fox News. (My great grandpa was by no means conservative.) It certainly is nice for you to be able to pin everything that anyone is upset about squarely on Fox News, but the fact is that this is just not reasonable. There actually are people upset about these things, or Fox News would not report on them. They are not forcing people to react. Just like any other news organization, liberal or conservative, they are reacting to the people. I think that there are just some sour grapes that Fox does better in the ratings.

Ratings don't equal quality - or honest reporting

[ In Reply To ..]
rather that they've cornered the market on conservative viewers. No competition. Just sayin'.
Nope, but neither do lower ratings. - The others have cornered the market on liberal vie
[ In Reply To ..]
Why shouldn't there be a news channel that isn't slanted so far left? Just sayin'.
That's not what I'm saying - at all
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not saying that the conservative viewpoint isn't one that should be heard. It should be heard, respected, and taken into consideration.

I am saying that there shouldn't be a news network who has cornered the market (through some of the manipulative methods mentioned above) and provides false and/or made-up news where there isn't any (lies) because there's no other source to go to.

Demand better.
Please don't fool yourself into thinking that Fox is - any different than whatever liberal
[ In Reply To ..]
channel you watch. They all lie and tell what they want you to hear. At any rate, my point was that the "War on Christmas" is something that people have been complaining about far longer than Fox News has been around or considered conservative. Fox News did not manufacture this. I, however, do not find "Happy Holidays" to be offensive. A "Holiday tree" I do find a little offensive, but that's why my tree is a Christmas tree.
Hey, I'm perfectly happy to cede you all the angels and mangers - BUT sm

that trimmed evergreen far predates Christianity, let alone Christmas.

It's a Mōdraniht/Perchta/Jul tree. I don't care if you prefer to call it a Christmas tree, but please don't insist that's its original and proper name.
Might not be the original name, but it certainly is the - "proper" name. I have yet to see

a Modraniht/Perchta/Jul tree lot. Merry Christmas!

I was in a store the other day.... Sm - Old Woman

[ In Reply To ..]
And the cashier wished me a "Happy Holiday" after I had checked out and was leaving. I smiled at her and said "Merry Christmas." Her face just lit up and she smiled back at me and said "Merry Christmas to you, too."

As for cashiers in stores, I can pretty well understand their need to use generic phrasing, but at the same time, it does bother me that, as in the case of this young lady, they are not allowed or do not feel comfortable wishing someone a Merry Christmas because of the fear of offending someone and possibly losing their job over it. It's just the world we are in now. I will continue to say Merry Christmas, and if someone takes offense to it, then that is their problem. I take offense to a lot of things (the pants-on-the-ground look, "tramp stamps" peeking out from under tight, skimpy tops, or hair that is sticking straight up, cut in a Mohawk and dyed to resemble a peacock) but I allow for differences and know that stewing over whether someone has offended me or not does more damage to me than to the offender.

Merry Christmas - mt1347

I always say Merry Christmas to them, because I know their employers instruct them to use Happy Holidays. Sometimes I say Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah. I'm not a rabid Christian and I respect every faith's holydays, but have you ever considered what would happen if they took "RAM" out of "Ramadan," the biggie in Islam?

God bless you versus bless you - AB

[ In Reply To ..]
If I sneezed, would you say "God bless you" or just "bless you?" I would say, "bless you." Would that offend you? It's the same principle, I say what I want to say, Happy Holidays, you say what you want to say, Merry Christmas. I respect what you say and let you say it, you do the same for me. It's not a matter of putting or taking the deity in or out of it, it's a matter of you respecting my right to believe as I do, and I doing the same for you. A store should not demand their employees say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, it should be up to the individual person to say what their beliefs dictate they say.

I completely agree!! - ERMT

I saw a recipe called "Paula Deen's Holiday Christmas Ham" on FB by the Food Network. People were seriously getting offended by it. Come on people...you can have ham for lots of holidays. One person that commented said that because they called it a "Holiday" ham instead of "Christmas" ham, there were "done with Food Network." How ridiculous. I consider myself VERY Christian but found that just silly. Ever hear of an Easter Ham? LOL!!!

JC Penney's here in NJ will be saying - mthead

"Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays." A saleswoman told me this back in October.

Holidays/Christmas - Betty

[ In Reply To ..]
The "holidays" refer to Thanksgiving Christmas, Kwanza and Hanukkah. If avoiding the term "Merry Christmas" to avoid hurting the feelings of those who celebrate other "holidays" then you will obviously hurt the feelings of those who celebrate Christmas. You're not going to win. Christmas is the holiday celebrated by the majority, I'm thinking. I refuse to say "Happy Holidays" because I would be taking Christ out of the equation and I refuse to do that. The season of Christmas is to celebrate Christ's birth regardless of the other "holidays" celebrated. If it weren't the stores wouldn't be so busy with everyone buying gifts which celebrates the tradition of the 3 wise men bringing gifts to baby Jesus. Jesus Christ is the reason we buy gifts for each other on Christmas. He's the reason for the season. If I offend you by saying his name....tough.

I'm not a Christian, but I'd accept your Merry Christmas in the very same spirit. We all know and say "to each his own." Now, let's learn to respect each's "own."

Boehner's Support For His Plan B Collapses, So Closes House For Holidays And Leaves,Dec 21, 2012
After the tea partiers who said they were behind him on his Plan B in the morning backed out later in the day, Speaker Boehner closed the House for the holidays. This all happened so fast they were literally wheeling in carts of food for a late night of lawmaking work when the House abruptly adjourned and they all walked out without voting on their own measure. He must be bitterly disappointed. As someone said, "Every time this guy takes a foot forward, he gets slammed in the back of the head ...

Baking Christmas Gifts...Oct 19, 2009
At my husband's family get together last weekend, I realized that my husband's family is just too huge to keep buying individual Christmas presents (15 adults and 5 kids, not counting his dad and my parents) plus our 3 kids so I've decided to get nice containers like a hatbox and fill it with baked goods, spiced pecans and jar mixes for each family.
