After the tea partiers who said they were behind him on his Plan B in the morning backed out later in the day, Speaker Boehner closed the House for the holidays. This all happened so fast they were literally wheeling in carts of food for a late night of lawmaking work when the House abruptly adjourned and they all walked out without voting on their own measure.
He must be bitterly disappointed. As someone said, "Every time this guy takes a foot forward, he gets slammed in the back of the head with a frying pan." We'll see, though. For him personally, it may come down to a choice between his Speakership versus our economy.
From the Washington Post: "The failure of a grand bargain was the latest oh-so-close moment for Obama and Boehner, who have been dancing around a deal to cut the deficit for the better part of the past two years. And the collapse of Plan B set a new low in Boehner’s sometimes rocky relationship with a House Republican caucus that has long been uneasy about the speaker’s dealmaking with Obama.
In a statement late Thursday, Boehner said it was now up to Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and Obama to come up with an agreement — without explaining what role he would play. The speaker ignored reporters’ questions and, at 8:04 p.m., he walked out of the Capitol."
Just what went happened to the support he had built in his own caucus and what happened to it at the link below.
