Working on Holidays

Posted: Jul 4, 2013

As long as I've been doing this, I should be used to it, but anyone else get upset about working on holidays?  I guess it's because it's summer and I'd much rather be outside floating in a pool, but just working today while knowing it's a holiday is getting to me.

Anyone else?  How do you cope?  Not working is not an option, so I'm trying to make the best of it.

BTDT, got the postcard - just a little ole MT

I feel exactly the same way and most times I run out of work, and then just take PTO for the rest of the time. This is the first time I have plenty of work ever, and I am done at 12:30 as I'm up at 4 so plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the day. Try to think of it like any other day of the week and take comfort in the fact that you are not the only one working and then go enjoy it as best as you can when you are done! Happy July 4th!

Thanks! - JustWonderin'

Thanks for the encouragement. You have the postcard, and I got the T-shirt :)

Here is how I feel about it - sm

I think it it as just your routine Thursday (or whatever day the holiday falls on). Years ago when my mom was alive she had many health problems. She would land in the emergency room on a holiday. Not by choice either. I'd go back to visit for the holidays and my poor mom could not enjoy the festivities as she was sick sitting in the emergency room or hospital bed. I thank those people who typed her report for doing that on the holiday because it was needed for her care. I figure people don't pick and choose when they are getting sick. So to me I don't think of holidays anymore. Just another day. Plus I need to pay my utility or cable or whatever bill.

Later DH will be going to the store and he will grill burgers for when I'm done work. I dread this holiday though because or animals freak out from the noise of the fireworks.

I have no problem at all working a holiday - Mae

Started little earlier this morning, getting off at 6 so if there are fireworks will be able to enjoy. It is raining at the present time and many activities are cancelled for this section of the state. At Thanksgiving, Christmas we usually work either 1 or the other, start little early, finish in enough time to join in if I want. No small children here so no Santa Claus issues.

I like your attitude. You sound like the kind of person who SHOULD be an MT, and is an MT for all the right reasons. As to the animals freaking out--a friend of mine has a dog that goes absolutely BONKERS when he hears fireworks or thunder. He is a shih tzu. We really thought that he was going to have a dog nervous breakdown. Anyway, she bought him a Thundershirt, and it works every time! Not sure if you are close to a store that sells them or if you can get one in time, but here is the info:
http://www.thundershirt.com/?gclid=COHW4fSllrgCFac7Mgod3RkA6Q

Me, I am a Rottweiler and Doberman kind of person and those dogs seem to think they are too "fierce" to be afraid. But who knows, some day I may buy a Thundershirt if needed. I understand that they also make them for cats now.

That's excellent - I'm going to look at it more closely. - But I need 8 of them LOL. Hopefully

The kittens (5) will be okay. One of our other cats is so mellow, loud noises don't bother her, but the mother & father of the kittens are who might have a problem. However, they are now inside (they have their own bedroom) and have plenty of places to hide, just don't know what festivities they have here or how loud.

I think this looks like an excellent product though. Thanks for the link. We'll see how it goes tonight and if not good I will put an order in before the next holiday.

I was skeptical at first until the shirt worked so well for my friend's dog. He would get in such a frenzy she nearly had to take him to the vet. I hope you and your critters have a happy, healthy holiday. Am going to watch fireworks now!

Thanks - sm

When I went through school the first thing the instructor said to us is if you are looking for a 9-5 job with weekends and holidays off this is not the job for you. I went in knowing I'd be working holidays and weekends, but for me a day is a day. I can do my grocery shopping on a week day as well as a weekend. I have no friends or family where I'm at so it's not like I'm missing out on anything and I'm not a holiday or tradition person.

What it all boils down to is people get sick and we have to type their reports for the docs. It was nothing when I worked at a hospital to receive a call at 3 or 4 in the morning to type an emergency report for someone going into surgery. I figured I'm sure that person was no more happier to have to have that done as I was to turn on my system and type it. There were a few times it wouldn't transfer so had to get in my truck and drive to the hospital to print it out for them also. Just all part of the job. I also figured if what I do for a job makes a difference in a persons health care then I have done my job.

I also got into it because I did want to work from home and spend time with my animals, not have to get up at 6am and do the whole routine of getting in. Also we have moved many times and I wanted a job that would not matter where I lived. Having sick family members makes me appreciate the time the other MTs take to complete my family's reports and I hope others feel that way about me.

My dad also tells me I should be thankful for a job because many people don't have anything. No, I'm not going to get rich doing this, and I'm struggling all the time because I'm not making enough, but I'm praying all the time DH will get a job soon and I'm grateful for what I have. Dad also works 6 days a week and says he takes what he can get because there may be a day when he can't do it anymore and that's how I feel too. Think I inherited my disposition and attitude from him.

But all in all I have no kids, no relatives, no friends so it's not like I want to hang out with them all the time. In fact I'll be getting back on the system to do some more work. I had no jobs for a few hours so was a nice break to clean my kitchen. DH is grocery shopping now and coming home with burgers to grill and we are going to watch Gettysburg tonight. So I'm having a pretty good day so far.

Hope your dogs are okay tonight too.
I hope you had a good night - Old Pro

The dogs and I got through the fireworks just fine. Although many people seem to be afraid of Rotties and Dobies, mine are very gentle. They actually seemed not to care too much about the fireworks. I would rather have them be indifferent than terrified!

It sounds like you are an animal person, too. I love all creatures, but especially large dogs. I agree with you about being glad for work. I formally retired a year and a half ago but am doing some consulting so I have a little walking around money. Did your critters get through the fireworks okay?
Some did okay - 2 cats were freaked. - sm

For the most part they were okay. Mama cat was restless pacing back and forth in her room getting scared at the noises, but Papa cat was like, what, what's the big deal, zzzzzzzz. :-) 1 kitten was freaked out running around, but I kept talking to her trying to get her to lay down. The rest didn't seem to have a problem. A little scared of the noises, but nothing major, but it was a busy night going back and forth to keep them all calm.

By the way, I love big dogs too. If I was to get a dog my first choice would be a golden retriever, second a Rottweiler. If I wanted protection I'd definitely get a dobie. I'd also like a German Shepherd. If I want a dog I want a dog with a big dog bark. Something that I could say "sick-em T-rex" and their teeth would show. ha ha My aunt has little dogs and they yap and that would get on my nerves, but if I was to get a small dog it would be a Sheltie.

If I didn't have to work so much I'd probably have more cats. I like cats because I'm a sedentary type of person and I love sitting and watching a movie with a cat curled up on my lap petting them. It's relaxing and a real stress reliever. When they look up into your face with such love and content it just is really peaceful and relaxing. Love my cats more than I do some people. LOL. When i would go visit my sister she used to have a small dog. Forget the name, the same kind that Gene Hackman had in the movie Crimson Tide. But she was always having to throw a ball to it, play with it. I like dogs, but I just prefer laid back animals. We'd like to one day get a big piece of land with some kennels and maybe set up a boarding house for cats and dogs or if we had a barn a place for people to board horses. Just love all animals.

That's great that you retired. I'm envious. I have 3 friends who are all retired now. One friend is my age, but her husband retired from the PD and they moved from the city (LA) to the middle of the country in the boonies. She spends her days fishing, bird watching, planting wild flowers, and enjoying her granddaughter. My other friends are older and enjoying their senior citizen status. Some days I feel as though I will never retire, but I am hopeful that even with the economy the way it is, DH will get a job soon and I won't have to worry so much. All I keep saying is 12 more years, 12 more years, 12 more years. LOL. Unless I win the lotto of course. :-) I'm just thankful for what I have. So many are in a worse situation than I am.

Glad your dogs did well. I really do loathe fireworks or any loud noisy things.

Yep working too, one of my IC jobs (have 2) changed - sm - XXX

our TAT requirements so have a bunch of work I have to do today to it is in on time, sucks. Granted I could have done some of it last night but was tired so just hung with one of my daughters, not something I get to do a lot of. So paying the price today....about to start and will work until we head out at 5 or for some fun and fireworks, just hope I get it all done before I leave, otherwise have to finish at 11pm tonight which would suck.

The Happy Holidays Vs. Merry Christmas DealDec 06, 2011
Ok, I'm a Christian. I'm not saying I'm perfect, quite the opposite. That being said, I am ok with "Happy Holidays" at this time of year. Why? Because we're in the season where there are several holidays!!!! I'm not offended if someone says that to me, matter of fact, I'm pleased because they said something nice. I was reading on Facebook the other day a "Don't take Christ out of Christmas" post from a Christian friend of mine and it sounded so dark a ...

My Mother And My Sister Are Fighting AGAIN! They Do This Every Year During The Holidays!Dec 23, 2010
I try to be the peacemaker and remain neutral, but this year my sister has taken to posting on facebook!  Is that not the most juvenile thing you have every heard??!!?!  Of course, she is slanting the facts to make her look like the victim.  My mom will never see it because she never uses a computer, doesn't even have email.  However, I'm a little aggravated because there are all these people on my sister's friends list commenting on it basically telling my sis ...

Boehner's Support For His Plan B Collapses, So Closes House For Holidays And Leaves,Dec 21, 2012
After the tea partiers who said they were behind him on his Plan B in the morning backed out later in the day, Speaker Boehner closed the House for the holidays. This all happened so fast they were literally wheeling in carts of food for a late night of lawmaking work when the House abruptly adjourned and they all walked out without voting on their own measure. He must be bitterly disappointed. As someone said, "Every time this guy takes a foot forward, he gets slammed in the back of the head ...
