So.....What's on your Christmas table? sm

Posted: Dec 12, 2011

Or your Hanukkah table or however you choose to celebrate the season?  I'm not here to split hairs on what we call it.  I just thought it would be interesting to share some of our favorite foods of the season....maybe a recipe or two.

Texas Pecan Cake (courtesy of my mom) makes a regular appearance on our table.  We don't like fruitcake in our house, but this is the Texas version, chock full of pecans and raisins.

Peanut Butter Balls, also known as Buckeyes, are another family tradition.  Again, thanks to my mom.  She is 83 years old and still insists on making these two treats.

I usually contribute pralines, sometimes a crab dip, and Martha Washington candy.

My brother, an old batchelor man at the ripe old age of 48, always brings something, but it is always a surprise.  On year it was a fantastic black bean salsa that he made himself.  He's a great cook....when he gets a notion.

And there are always mixed nuts, chocolate covered cherries, and York Peppermint Patties....Daddy always loved those.  There are all kinds of chips and dips and Sour Cream Fruit Salad that tastes wonderful with the Texas Pecan Cake.

Christmas Dinner is ham with all the trimmin's..potato salad, fruit salad, asparagus, stuffed celery.  And of course, all the goodies left from Christmas Eve night for dessert.

So.....what's on your table?

They're reall yummy and my sister orders them every year. The port wine is really, really good.

She didn't get them last year. I may need to do that this year.

Who are you feeding? The Dallas Cowboys? - Just kidding.

Sounds wonderful! We keep it pretty small since there are only 3 of us +/- a couple drop ins. A ham, some kind of cookies (I like to try new recipes every year), lots of cut-up veggies to munch on, homemade cranberry-orange sauce with a touch of brandy, baked sweet potatoes with brown sugar and brandy, and a fruitcake with lots of Brandy (starting to see a pattern here).

No.... Just a couple of teenage boys... Sm - Old Woman

but I do see your point! LOL

And, yes, I did notice a pattern in yours, LOL. The cranberry-orange sauce with BRANDY sounds very interesting. Care to share?

Oh. Teenage boys. Makes sense now. - Just joking.

Sure you have enough food? : )

The "recipe" for the brandied cranberry sauce is more of a technique compiled from web searches. Basically, follow the instructions on the bag of cranberries. For the liquid, swap up to 1/2 c of brandy (or cognac) and up to 1 c of orange juice for the water listed. (I used 1/4 c brandy and 1/2 c OJ, the rest water.) For the sugar, I swapped 1/4 c brown sugar for white sugar. I added grated orange peel just because I like it. If it is to soupy, add corn starch mixed with water to the sauce.

The cooked cranberry peels (skins?) seemed a bit tough last time, so I am going to try putting the sauce through a colander with medium holes this time.
Sounds amazing! - Old Woman

I love the taste of cranberries and orange together. I am guessing the alcohol cooks off, so all you are left with is the taste of the brandy. Do you use regular cognac or a flavored one?
I used brandy... - Just joking
[ In Reply To ..]
but saw cognac listed on another recipe, which is why I mentioned it. The more choices, the better, IMO. You have me thinking about other flavors, though. I will have to see what kinds are available. This "recipe" is pretty much all about taste preference, so I say try whatever strikes your fancy. And if the experiment does not work out, there is always the canned as backup.

My husband and I are cooking a BIG pot of gumbo. I'm from south MS and stepdad is from New Orleans, LA. We love gumbo. Anyways the gumbo, potato salad. A ham, some oyster dressing, and we will have some desserts, lots of chocolate as we are a choc loving bunch. Of course, we drink our sweet tea with it.

There's quite a lot of us that make it out to my daughter's, so here goes-
ham, turkey, stuffing, salad, green beans, rolls, mashed potatoes, gravy, black walnuts (my mother gets them from back home and brings them raw and also in some kind of desert), pie and of course, more chocolate than you can shake a stick at. We're Midwesterners originally, so we love our meat and potatoes. It will be a starch fest as usual, I will need a week to exercise it off!!!

There are just two of us, but our favorites every year - see message

We don't celebrate X-mas (too depressing for me - no kids and no family nearby), but at Christmas this year I'm going make lamb with Tzasiki (garlic, yogurt, cucumber dip) or a ham (depending on what we feel like). I usually make my grandma's Jello with cream cheese and crushed pineapple, my other grandmas' green bean and corn casserole with sour cream and cheese. This year I think I will make sweet potato casserole made with some bourbon (courtesy recipe of my aunt that I've never tried yet, but her's is always good). Now thinking about it I will most likely go with ham and have garlic mashed potatos with it and pumpkin pie (the one still in the freezer because we had too much to eat at Thanksgiving). Since it's just the two of us we don't do a lot, but those are the couple dishes I always make at holidays.

Birdzilla (as my kids call it) 15+ pound turkey
Honey B Ham (brown sugar coating) 10+ pounds (my son and I LOVE ham1!)
Chicken and dumplings
Chicken and dressing
Candied yams with marshmallows
Dinner rolls
Cranberry jelly
Chocolate tarts
Pecan pie
Pumpkin pie
At least 3 versions of fudge
Chocolate covered pretzels
Green onions (eww but hubby loves them!)

and I think that is about it!

Everything home-made except the cranberry jelly!

It is easier just to work a normal day than cook Christmas dinner! :)))))

Nothing. Haven't celebrated/cooked Christmas - just too depressing right now

dinner since my mom died last year. My dad just passed November 14th, so I'm really not in the Christmas mood. It's just me and my brother, so I don't know. I'm not cooking a big meal just for us, I asked him and he said nothing in particular. Don't even have a tree up.

I do know that I will be attending worship services that morning. We just had our choir program Sunday and after the service had a church-wide fellowship dinner - turkey, dressing, etc. The choir director released us with the words "go join your families" and it hit me how alone I am right now! Crap! Now I'm starting to cry again!

But, if we were doing the traditional - here goes:

Chicken, dressing, ham (sometimes), meatloaf (my dad was weird), mashed potatoes, potato salad, corn, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, rolls, Chocolate pie, lemon merengue pie, coconut pie, pumpkin pie, chocolate cake, fruit salad, assorted homemade cookies, fudge, and of course all of the nibbles of cookies, candies, chips, dip, sliced oranges, apples with caramel dip, strawberries, cheesecake. Whew!

We used to have a big family, but several family members have passed. My oldest brother and his wife/kids go to her mother's for Christmas dinner. He didn't even ask what me and my other brother were going to do Thanksgiving. Doncha just love dysfunctional families!

I am so sorry for your loss....sm - Old Woman

I lost my dad 6 years ago November 5 and the holidays are still hard without him....bearable, but hard. He loved Christmas so. Now my mom's health is declining due to Alzheimer...she is 83...and this will be our last Christmas with her. I know she may be here physically but her mind will be completely gone by next year.

I think spending Christmas morning in church worshiping the babe that became the man that became the Saviour of the world is a wonderful and fitting thing to do. Perhaps you and your brother could have dinner at a hotel in the area or somewhere else that serves a nice Christmas dinner after church. Dress up and enjoy your time with him. Remember that he is hurting, too, and needs your company. May God bless you and your brothers...yes, both of them...during this holiday season and draw you closer as a family.

Just too depressing right now. - Old Pro

Sorry for your loss. I was wondering. . . - Maggie May

have you checked into volunteering at a food kitchen or homeless shelter on Christmas Day? While I am sure you don't fell like doing that, it will get you out of the house and you will be helping others and I bet it would make you feel better. Nothing will make up for your loss, of course, but I definitely think you would feel better doing this than you would sitting at home on Christmas Day feeling sorry for yourself - though I'm not saying you don't have every reason to feel that way, don't get me wrong. Being helpful and feeling needed is good for everyone.

You're certainly not alone. My dad passed away Nov. 30 after a short and terrible struggle with an aggressive lung cancer. It was very bad. I have a younger brother who has just taken over mom and has shut me out, so I don't know what to do. My heart goes out to you. It all happened so fast that I don't believe it's all quite sunk in all the way yet.

I wish it were possible to gather you all up and bring you to my house and cook you a big meal and give you all a big hug! If we had the technology to do it (you know, like they did on Star Trek) I would be happy to have you all as guests. My heart goes out to you.

Re: Nothing (and all the people who experience loss and depression) - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
God bless you and give you peace. Although the opposite appears to be true, hope you will remember you are NOT alone. Force yourself to keep as busy as possible and just tire yourself out physically. Then, at the end of the day, relax and treat yourself to a special little holiday meal and maybe a good book and DVDs. You might find yourself enjoying an unconventional Christmas on your own. Don't let those holiday, ''big-family'' TV commercials depress you. Your road might be different but it can still be enjoyable.

Veggie Soup! ...and Virginia Ham for sandwiches... - No major kitchen duty...

[ In Reply To ..]
My Dad makes veggie soup on Christmas Eve...we decided years ago as a family that Christmas was a day for games, enjoying each others' company, and visiting with our friends who come over. We watch movies. Nobody (namely my mother, sister and I) is in the kitchen cooking a huge meal and missing out. Instead we heat up the huge pot of soup and have ham sandwiches with homemade bread and desserts. It has been wonderful. We do our huge family meal on Thanksgiving. I am very fortunate that my extended family can travel and spend Christmas with us.
