Big Controversary coming up here in a little town outside Atl about Breast feeding in public What's the deal here ? Do you feel the Breast should be covered or exposed? This is what God gave us Breasts for Mother's to feed our Babies ..... When that milk comes in oh my !I never Breast fed did yall and if you did .... did you you ever have a problem ? It is such a natural thing !

It may be why God gave us breasts, but he didn't put them their for everybody to see. Just my opinion.

It depends on how it's done. I used to do it on a regular basis and there was literally nothing to see. My daughter-in-law also breastfeeds in public and no one can see anything; she throws a receiving blanket over her shoulder and the baby is completely out of view.

On the other hand, I have seen cases where they expose themselves and do find that rather jarring. So in my opinion, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it as long as it's done discreetly.

Yuk, I don't want to see it. - Tara

I understand breast feeding is a personal choice and is a natural form of nutrition. It is probably even better for babies than any milk or formula. Speaking for myself, I don't want to see it or hear it. I also don't think breastfeeding moms should get so upidy about other people in public not having any appreciation for their breastfeeding. It's not like they concieved or birthed the child in public, why do I have to see her breasts or hear those suckling sounds?

I did breastfeed my children for the first few months before switching over to formula. I did not breastfeed in public because I didn't want to expose myself. In fact, I was raised with the expectation that a woman should only expose herself to her husband and maybe a doctor if need be. That was it, I would never put myself before the public. This is just my feelings and I speak only for myself.

I used to agree with your views until I breastfed my kids. With my son, I would go into hiding in a bathroom stall when I was out in public, but then I felt like that was always where I was when I went out in public because my son nursed so often, then with my second son I did the same thing, but didn't nurse him as long, then with my daughter I've said to heck with it. It is a natural thing, I cover up, but I in no way think that a breastfeeding mother should 1) have to stay home and out of the public just because she may have to nurse, 2) feeding your baby in the privacy of a bathroom stall is just as unsanitary as you bringing your food plate into the bathroom to eat. When I go out in public it is to visit with friends or family and I decided that I'm not going to waste my time out sitting in a bathroom stall. I try to feed my baby before we leave home, but you know sometimes they are hungry and you just can't help it. Breasts are there for feeding babies, they aren't meant to be sexual, though that is what media and society has made them to be. I love nursing my babies, public or not, and I, for one, think it's absolutely horrific when I see mothers with their babies in a car seat with their bottles propped up so they don't have to hold them while they eat or doing anything else for that matter.

Sometimes sounds are unavoidable - Old part-timer

[ In Reply To ..]
Some babies are just noisy. There are noisy bottle-feeders, too, but no one would say you couldn't bottle feed in public.

I know adults... - Mary

who sound like pigs when they eat. Should we insist they hide out?? LOL
Speaking of noisy.... - Old part-timer

My children were also quite gassy. Maybe someone will invent a sound-proof diaper for the people who are disgusted by sounds emitted by babies, like those "disgusting sucking sounds".
That's funny... - Mary
[ In Reply To ..]
It would be nice if we could put ourselves in a bubble...away from everything that disgusted us. Good thing I never find anything a baby does to be disgusting since they don't know any better. Now a grown man is another story altogether... LOL

I breastfed all 3 of my children... - Mary

[ In Reply To ..]
because it was the healthiest thing I could do for them and it's why
God gave me breasts. I didn't expose myself in public simply because I'm not the type to do that but if my babies were hungry and I was in public I would try to go to the car, if necessary, or always brought something to cover up with. There is nothing "yucky" about breast feeding your infant. I think all mothers should do it and, frankly, I have much more respect for those mothers who make the right choice. Milk from another species or any formula is not healthy for human infants. Our children would certainly be much healthier if more mothers made the right choice. I've seen plenty of women breastfeeding their babies and, even though I would make an effort to cover myself, I don't find it disgusting and I certainly respect them regardless of how they go about it. Now rant all you want. ; )

It's not always that the mother makes the "wrong - wannie

[ In Reply To ..]
choice." I didn't have enough milk to feed either of my children. They would have starved had I made the "right choice" and breast fed them. However, if a mother is able to breast feed, then, by all means do so. I don't however, think breasts need to be exposed in public for any reason. Thank you for always covering up. When breast feeding needs to be done in public, the breast should still be covered.

I'm not sure... - Mary

[ In Reply To ..]
I buy the "not enough milk" theory. ; )With a good diet, I believe any mother can breast feed. Maybe very rare cases but that's just what I believe. In fact, the more a mother nurses, the more milk she produces. I always covered up; however, I think it is very sad in this society that nudity is so accepted unless it happens to be a mother breastfeeding. The hypocrisy is astounding.
I agree - breastfeeding mom
[ In Reply To ..]
I agree with you, Mary, about nudity being acceptable, but breastfeeding isn't. When the nipple is in the baby's mouth, there is just as much breast exposed, if not less, than some types of bikini tops or bras that are exposed to us and yet those are perfectly okay. Why should our babies have to suffocate under a blanket to be fed when you see many girls and women young and old expose themselves constantly in other ways?
Whether or not you buy it, it is a reality. - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
With my first child, I exclusively breast fed. With my second, I could not. I was up from 7 p.m. until 9 a.m. switching him from breast to breast, trying to satiate him one night and the pediatrician told me that if we continued in this manner, he would end up in the hospital, so I made the choice that any woman would make. I fed him formula because he needed nutrition and we both needed sleep. The doctor told me that he was not getting what he needed, which I already knew, but did not want to accept because I wanted so badly to exclusively breast feed again. I really think that it had something to do with the emergency C-section, versus the vaginal birth, but that is just my speculation. There are plenty of women who cannot breast feed for whatever reason and many of them feel badly about it. There is no reason to make them feel worse.

As far as covering up while you breast feed, I think that it should be a no brainer. I am with you. Nudity of any kind is unacceptable, breast feeding or otherwise. That is my opinion and I know that many people disagree, but how hard is it to throw a blanket over the baby or buy a nursing cover? If you want to whip it out in your house, go for it, but in public, why make other people uncomfortable? I always covered up!
Not to sound rude, but I don't really care if you buy - wannie
[ In Reply To ..]
the "not enough milk theory" or not. Just because you were able to breast feed your child doesn't mean that every mother can. I didn't have enough milk to help my child grow like he needed to, period, end of story.

As far as the nudity goes, any type of nudity in public is wrong, whether it be a bikini top or a breast used for feeding a child.
Like I said... - Mary
[ In Reply To ..]
I think the cases where a mother can't breast feed are far rarer than the cases where a mother just doesn't want to. I stand by my opinion. ; )

As far as the nudity...one example is a choice, the other is a necessity. Surely, you are mature enough to see the difference.
Yes, Mary, you're right, everyone else is wrong - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Your opinion (and that is what it is) is the only one that is right, and the rest of these mothers who have raised children are completely in the wrong. Obviously, if you did not breast feed your child or if you think that not covering up in public is not exactly tasteful you are a terrible mother!!!

Give me a break. No one is disagreeing that breast feeding is the best option, but to belittle those who could not or did not is ridiculous. Also, if you feel comfortable doing that in public without being covered up, go ahead, but don't get offended when I don't want my children or my husband to see that.
We all have an opinion... - Mary
[ In Reply To ..]
right or wrong but it is a fact that breastfeeding is best and it is MY opinion that all mothers should do what is best for their children and they will if they have any care or concern for their children. And...I am saying that in my experience I have seen more mothers who just choose not to do what is best rather than what they can't. And...I did not say covering up shouldn't be considered. In fact, I said that I always covered up but there are instances where a mother may not be prepared to do that and her baby shouldn't go hungry because of it, if she feels comfortable in that situation. I think a terrible mother would be one who chose to let her baby go hungry in order to satisfy those who might be offended when we live in a society that is willing to accept for more distasteful scenarios than breastfeeding.

Children see animals nursing their young all the time and think nothing of it. My children have seen plenty of mothers nursing and think absoultely nothing of it and I don't make them think it is something shameful because it isn't. If you don't want your husband to see it, you must be very insecure in your relationship with him as I am sure all husbands have seen far more than a mother breastfeeding her baby. I am not belittling anyone. If you can't breastfeed, fine...do the next best thing. If you are unable to cover up, feed your hungry baby regardless of what others think...and I'm sure that the majority of mothers won't care if anyone is offended or not. I'm sure they're not doing it to offend but to feed their baby.

We were at a pee wee basketball game once and a mother behind us was nursing her child (at least 1-1/2 years old). My husband and I both noticed and weren't offended and it didn't bother me that my husband witnessed it because I turn him on. ; ) My older sister nursed her babies in public and never thought of covering, while I always did. She offended the entire family because she nursed her youngest son till he was 5 years old. I know what it feels like and I hear you but, most women are not out there flaunting it simply because they are breastfeeding. Bottom line...I respect any woman who breastfeeds her baby and I'm not offended unless she strips down to nothing to do it. Some people make a big deal out of something that is perfectly natural while bending over backwards for those who commit the unnatural.
Why would you even insinuate that anybody wouldn't want what - wannie
[ In Reply To ..]
would be best for their child. I don't feel the least bit bad about not letting my child starve and I'm glad I had sense enough to know that. Belittling someone about whom you know nothing about or their situation is rude and absolutely horrible.

As for the nudity, both are choices.
You obviously... - Mary
[ In Reply To ..]
carry a lot of guilt or you wouldn't be trying so hard to convince me.

You're wrong about the nudity. In certain instances a mother may be unprepared and have no choice but to feed her baby with nothing to cover. Adults have the choice to leave their house with adequate clothes. To belittle a mother about whom you know nothing for having to make this choice is rude and absolutely horrible.

This argument has been SKEWED - Analyst

[ In Reply To ..]
I am really sick and tired of this argument being skewed into very black-and-white positions, as though everyone who is opposed to having women expose themselves by plopping their boobs out in public is somehow "anti-baby" or "anti-breast feeding."

The advantages to babies of being breastfed have been long established. The ONLY question is whether or not the mother should RESPECT other people enough to breastfeed discretely. IMO YES, absolutely she should be allowed to do it in public IF done discretely, which of course would have to be defined in great detail in any legislation (which legislators are famous for NOT doing!).

When I fed in public - June

[ In Reply To ..]
I knew that I was going out in public and planned for it. I expressed breastmilk at home, bottled it and fed that breastmilk to my baby and gave it to the babysitter to feed my baby when I needed a sitter. Of course hiding out in a bathroom is unsanitary, I never would have done that, though I may have gone to my car and always had a blanket in my diaper bag if I might need to cover the baby or me while out. I found expressing milk in advance was more than enough. Sometimes I even brought juice, too. I fed my baby breastmilk in public, didn't expose myself and didn't offend anyone.

Sure, God gave us breasts for breastfeeding, but I think if that was all they were for, the nips wouldn't be so sensate.

That's the way it should be done... - Mary

[ In Reply To ..]
although there may be times that come up and you're unprepared and I don't believe a baby should have to go hungry just because idjits in this day and age are offended by it. I never worked till my kids were older and never really had the need for a baby sitter. One day I had a doctor's appointment and had to leave our 2 youngest with my mother. The baby was only 8 months old and I was still nursing him (I nursed them all for a year) so I expressed some milk into a bottle and left it with my mother. I never realized there would be such a problem. When I got back she told me that he refused the bottle and would only gag when she tried to give it to him. I don't think bottles are bad if you have the "correct" fluid in them but they don't always work. I had always heard that if you bottle feed your baby (even if it's breast milk in the bottle) that sometimes a baby will refuse to nurse if it's done too often. I preferred to nurse and wanted to make sure I could. I liked the convenience and especially the closeness you have to your babies and the fact that it's free. I really feel bad for those babies whose mothers absolutely refuse to nurse them just because they think it's yucky. It's like an animal kicking their young away. So sad...

Isn't our society so screwed up. You see fat men topless in the summer (Yuch) but they don't outlaw that or complain about. Breast feeding is natural and healthy - just cover up while you are doing it!
Vomiting and defecation are NATURAL too. sm - SocialCommentary
[ In Reply To ..]
Vomiting, urination, and defecation are all natural processes too. But most people have the common sense and CLASS not to do them in front of others. By all means -- feed your baby but do it discretely. Otherwise you're just being selfish.
Reality 101: Men\'s breasts aren't sexualized. - Jung
[ In Reply To ..]
Last time I checked, male breasts weren\'t sexualized. Since women\'s breasts ARE, you are comparing apples and oranges. Besides, those
\"topless\" men you refer to are usually on the beach or in their yard. How can you compare that with being in a shopping mall or other public place? Answer: You can\'t.

BIG NEWS FLASH: Nobody wants to see your boobs! Keep \'em covered. If you\'re such an exhibitionist and so determined to flash people, then do it in private and not in a public place.
My grandmother was always right. - Breast AND bottle
[ In Reply To ..]
She had 4 children during the depression, and breastfeeding was the least expensive way to keep her kids fed and healthy. But, she warned me when my first son was born that I should use a bottle as well, or else "You'll never get a break!" She was a very practical lady! So, every day my babies received at least one bottle, which often was full of breast milk. In fact, hubby and I managed to come up with a great system. After the mid evening feeding, I'd go straight to bed and hubby stayed downstairs with the baby. Around 11:00 p.m., when the babe was hungry again, dad had some nice quiet bonding time doing a bottle feed. Meanwhile, I was still fast asleep upstairs. He brought the baby upstairs when he went to bed, and when that middle-of-the night feed rolled around, I got up to nurse, having had about 5 or 6 solid hours of sleep. And dad was able to sleep through the night and could get up and have a productive day at the office.
I like the bottle/breast combo myself. Grandmom was right. Other people like to feed babies and feel the closeness, too. Let dads, grandparents, siblings, etc., in on the fun. Give yourself a break. Grandmom used to call bottles the "poor woman's wet nurse."
Sounds like a good plan... - Mary
[ In Reply To ..]
you had going. Whatever works for you but I think feeding is best left up to the mother. I don't think God had bottles in his plan when he invented breasts. We survived long before bottles were invented and I think other family members...including Dad...can get just as close by holding, cuddling and rocking to sleep. Just my take...I'm sure there are others. : )

Disgusting and rude - Mom of 2

[ In Reply To ..]
Why? You eat in public don't you??

As long as mother is being discreet, you might see a tiny flash of nipple if you're really looking hard. Once baby is attached, all you see is a bit of the top of the breast (realistically, no more than you see if she was wearing a low-cut top).

I do have a problem with women who flash around like they're at a nudist colony, but the majority of us don't want the whole world looking at our breasts, we just want to feed our hungry baby. Plenty of times I've pointed out to my husband a beautiful baby who has just finished feeding and he hasn't even noticed a baby was there until I mention it because the mother is sitting quietly in the corner of a cafe.

Which would you prefer, a flash of skin for 3 seconds or a screaming, hungry baby?

I think you're disgusting and rude. Here in Australia, breastfeeding is protected under anti-discrimination legislation and I am very thankful for that.

Lucky for the babies... - Mary

[ In Reply To ..]
in Australia. They can eat without being discriminated against. ; )

Nay in public but if must, should be covered up. - Breastfeeding mother myself.

[ In Reply To ..]
It's indecent and inappropriate to be showing female breasts or breastfeeding in public.

As for those who want to pull the God gave it to us card, He also warns us many times about keeping ourselves covered and not showing ourselves off physically.

Add to this the lascivious nature of our culture today, it is inappropriate.

Keep it covered if you MUST do it.

It's a private act that belongs in private.

As for the "it's natural" claim, it's natural to pee and poop, too, but we don't allow that in public (yet, thank goodness)!

It is only indecent... - Mary

[ In Reply To ..]
because present society thinks so. It's appropriate for 2 men to kiss each other in public but inappropriate for a mother to nurse her baby. Something wrong with that picture. Not many women are open to exposing themselves but when a baby is hungry and you're not prepared, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. You can always turn your head like I have to do when I'm with my children and see 2 men kissing in public. That offends me far more than a nursing mother. No one poops and pees in public; however, we all eat in public so babies should be allowed to nurse in public. I think there's a big difference.
