This guy is supposed to be an academic, yet the article clearly indicates he does not have a clue about how poverty is measured. I have already answered your question in the post below about disparity. I do not feel compelled to repeat myself when dealing with posters who are absolutely determined to dumb down an extremely complex issue and bent on missing the point.

Let's keep this simple. The entire statement he made is flawed in the absence of comparative data across multiple demographic groups, i.e., ethnic, family composition, age and geography. Here is what disparity looke like: a 24.7% poverty level for allegedly all blacks may sound perfectly acceptable to you, but when compared to the overall population poverty rate of 8.6% for non-Hispanic whites and 11.6% for Asians, IT SUCKS. What is so great about 1 in 4 blacks living below poverty level in the first place? Those are 2008 figures.

Now, when broken down into the groups described in the post below, the number paint an entirely different picture. For example, 34% of black children under the age of 18 live in poverty...that's 1 out of every 3 children. Those figures are from 2007. In 2006, 40% of black female head of households live in poverty....the same figure your authors tried to pawn off as 1960's number. BTW, a whopping 70% black female head of households lived in poverty in 1960.

Wrong numbers, flawed study, false premise, missing MAJOR demographic factors = no truth whatsoever.

Over the years there have been a number of critiques of the way the government measures poverty. One on-going critique is of the types of income that are included in (or excluded from) the poverty measure. By failing to include income that many low-income people receive in the form of public assistance, some critics maintain that the extent of poverty is over-stated.

If the value of food stamps, publicly provided health insurance benefits, and cash welfare payments were counted as income in the poverty calculation, many people would no longer be considered poor.

Who said anything about a government study? I took my data from the National Poverty Center at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. Academia, baby, academia. Those folks are into the pure joy of scholarship through research. I know, elitist, snobby intellectual, socialist, commie pinkos, no doubt.

The group, America's Health Insurance Plans, released a report claiming that the new health care reform bill will drive up insurance premiums because not everyone will be forced into the system.
