Pink Glove Dance

Can anyone recommend a product that will cover gray/white roots without turning my hair a pink color? Some years ago I was using over the counter color and was actually approached by people, telling me my hair was "purple." I told my stylist and she said the over the counter products have a violet base, and when applied to brown hair it gives a pretty highlight. If you apply it to hair that has lost its color it soaks up the violet color and that's what you see. ...
