Nook versus Kindle? any recommendations? (sm)

Posted: Aug 2, 2010

Acquaintance told me Kindle is better than Nook.  Have been looking at them on line and can't see much difference.  Anyone own an e-reader they would recommend?

TIA  :-)

I haven't seen a Kindle in person so I can't comment on it. I know it's been around longer and that's the first one people think of when they think of an e-reader. My husband and I got each other Nooks for Christmas so we got them in the first wave after they came out. I have to say that I just love it. One thing I like is that I can download books in many formats. This may have changed, but in the past the Kindle could only take one format of e-book, and you could only purchase them from Amazon. I have purchased e-books from the Sony e-reader site, Barnes and Noble, Fictionwise, Kobo Books, and other places... and that's not to mention all the free books I have on my Nook right now. I really like the touchscreen at the bottom of the Nook. They have come out with some updates for it since I got mine which have added a beta internet browser, chess, and Sodoku, which I guess you don't really need with an e-reader, but it's a nice little extra.

I have to admit it's fun to go into Barnes and Noble with the Nook and be able to get the special in-store offers, and there are usually many free downloads, sometimes free books, sometimes articles or short stories, sometimes savings in the cafe or on a CD or something. Sometimes I'll just browse in the store and if I see a book I might want in the future, I'll look it up on my Nook, compare the prices, and add it to my wish list.

A little trick I found for the Nook which I showed my mother-in-law (who is in her 70s and just got a Nook for her birthday a month ago, and is now reading constantly. She loves it!) is you can search for books on the Nook, and if you put 0.00 in the search box, it brings up over 900,000 free books!

Lastly, if you get on Facebook, I get notified of a free book every Friday for "Free Fridays" from Barnes and Noble, and there are a couple of other places, InkMesh and Kobo Books which are always posting free books. With the Nook, you can grab the ones posted for the Sony E-reader and for Barnes and Noble.

This is kind of rambling. Like I said, I can't compare the two, Kindle and Nook. I can only say that I absolutely love my Nook. No matter what you get, if you don't mind spending a good penny to get a beautiful cover, check out oberondesign.com. We both got a cover from them for our Nooks (make them for Kindle, too) and they are beautiful. Got one for my daughter for her birthday (she also got a Nook for her birthday) and for my mother-in-law and they love them.

One more thing I just thought of... I don't know if the Kindle is just WiFi or if it also has 3G. We have the Nook that has both (they've come out with a just WiFi version now). The one with 3G costs more since you get the free 3G coverage with it... no plan required or monthly fee or anything like with the Ipad. Anyway, we just recently went on vacation and I was able to sit in the car and browse for and download Ebooks while we were traveling. I was able to pick up 3G just about everywhere we went except in the boonies or a country backroad or something.

Thanks you so much ! (sm) - bbb

This was just what I needed (some real feedback from someone) and your post was so helpful.

Mom wants to buy me an eread for my birthday, but she likes to LOOK at things she buys (LOL). So she would prefer to go to B&N to actually see the NOOK.

Thanks for all the great website info and "tips" too (and site where I can get a nice cover). So appreciate your help !! Happy reading :-)

Kindle is better than everything! As a dedicated e-book reader, Kindle has been rated the best. For loads of information about the Kindle, google "kindle nation," a website belonging to Stephen Windwalker.

The new version coming out on Aug 27 is smaller and lighter, but still has a 6-inch reading screen. You have a choice of 3G with Wifi or just Wifi. The 3G is a bit more expensive, but the internet access via 3G is free for life. If you have home Wifi, though, and will not need to download over 3G, you can get by with just the Wifi version. That version is also useful for kids who need to do their school reading on a Kindle without the temptation of surfing the net.

The new Kindle will hold 3500 books and has the capacity to run Kindle Apps, two games having already come out.

Contrary to what someone else posted, you are NOT limited to only Amazon books. Amazon has more available books than any other ereader seller, though.

Amazon provides superb support. You are able to search for books via your Kindle itself, buy them with a press of a button, and have them in your Kindle within 60 seconds. A massive number of books are available even via Amazon for free. Once purchased, they remain archived on your Amazon website, where they can be downloaded repeatedly for free, thus making the virtual storage capacity of the Kindle virtually unlimited.

You can also use your Kindle to hold Word documents and PDFs . . . your Kindle account comes with an email address to which you can send your documents for conversion. They will fly through the air to you via Whispernet for 15 cents or you can download them via the internet. I use this feature for work.

The reading screen of the Kindle uses e-ink technology. It is not a back-lit screen like your computer or any other ebook reader. There is thus no eyestrain. Font sizes can be changed easily.

The Kindle can surf the internet. On a recent business trip, I used mine to answer email. I use it all the time for looking up answers via Wikipedia. It has a very good keyboard.

Kindle can be used for music and to play books on CDs. It has speakers and a headset port. It will even play music in the background while you read.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Kindle for fuss-free reading enjoyment. I adore mine and carry it around everywhere I go. I have downloaded fresh reading material in the car, at the beach, and in airports.

Kindle remembers exactly where I stopped reading. If you have two Kindles, it will tell you where you are no matter what Kindle you are using. It allows highlights, notes, and the clipping of articles and snips from newspapers and magazines. Current Kindle models have organization features so that you can shelve your books and periodicals as you please.

Don't take my word for it, though. Amazon will accept returns within 30 days, so you can try a Kindle. If you do not like it, you can just send it back.

It's worth waiting until August 27, too.

The Nook does everything the Kindle does - Another Nookie

Just about everything mentioned about the Kindle is also on the Nook including shop right from your Nook, use it to store and read Word documents and PDFs. It also has E-ink technology.... that is not exclusive to the Kindle. You can "sideload" to your Nook just like it's another drive. Nook also has an MP3 player and headphone port. E-books can be archived in your Barnes and Noble account for virtually unlimited storage of E-books. Of course, the Nook has the advantange of having a brick and mortar store you can take it into and get the special offers. I guess the only thing you can't do is download the Kindle apps to a Nook. There are a couple of games on the Nook now, and the operating system of the Nook is compatible with adding apps in the future and there is talk about doing that. I kind of like using my E-reader for reading though, so don't care a whole lot about buying apps for it.

I think it boils down to which look you prefer, including the little keyboard at the bottom of the Kindle versus the touchscreen at the bottom of the Nook. They are very much alike in every other way. You can go into any Barnes and Noble and now Best Buy stores to actually handle and experience the Nook before you buy.

You can bet no matter which one someone gets, they are both going to be trying to up each other with the technology and the pricing, so the consumer ends up winning anyway. :)

Since they seem pretty similar, which one wins price wise? - nm

Pricing... - Another Nookie
[ In Reply To ..]
Nook with 3G $199, Wifi only $149
Kindle with 3G $189, Wifi only $139

B&N lowered their price on the Nook, followed by Amazon lowering their price on the Kindle the next day. Bit of a price war going on right now. I'm almost tempted to pick up a Wifi only Kindle to go along with my Nook, lol.
Yes, but if you have them both and they mate - you will be stuck with a kook! nm

My mom just came home after a grueling 9-day stay in the hospital for COPD, CHF and intubation with successful extubation.  She needs to stay quiet and rest to get her strength back but she can only read so many magazines and, as we all pretty much know, daytime TV isn't the most entertaining thing in the world.
