I think Michelle gave a great speech. I think Denzel gave a great speech. They are not opposing arguments and what they said was not mutually exclusive.
But I get it, as long as Denzel plays Uncle Tom and is talking about being grateful to God for what he has instead of also mentioning sometimes race does create more obstacles for him that need to be overcome, he's A-OK with the far right wing and not considered an "uppity" threat like Michelle who should know her place and be grateful we "allowed" her husband to become president, right?
Wrong. All of this just just because Michelle said the cartoon depiction of her in the New York Times "stung" a bit, which she has every right to admit. And let's not forget, nobody depicted Denzel Washington in an Afro with a machine gun on the cover of New Yorker magazine, either.
Look, I'm a white girl in the South. Sell it somewhere else racism doesn't exist anymore and that I'M the racist for not pretending along with y'all that everything you say is okay, nonracist and isn't just plain mean.
Oh, trotting out the old Uncle Tom. How ridiculous. - nm
I think the comments above about "poor sweet - thing" and "grateful"
[ In Reply To ..]
spur back to when blacks were owned. They have been "allowed" so many privileges they should be "grateful." Sort of like my dog should be grateful I don't make him sleep in the rain and let him in the garage. (example. I don't have a dog, and I would treat him better than that)
Read again - see who said "grateful" and who said - "sweet thing". (sm)

So quick to jump on the bandwagon to nowhere. LOL
And this comment from yesterday about Denzel/Michelle? - what does it say (see link)
"She spits in the face of those that pay for her vacations."
But Denzel, who's vacations we also pay for, is A-okay with the far right because he avoided race obstacles and mentioned gratitude and God in his speech;)
I agree, an absurd perspective (edited for clarity) - see message

I think you're right, people still view them as subordinate, despite the fact that they haven't been "owned" for nearly 150 years, but I think some are not fully AWARE they look at things this way. But when they use those terms, it only makes it more obvious to the rest of us.
As for your point about slavery and pets, where I live, racists don't treat blacks AS they would a dog, they treat their dogs better. And then there are those that treat both other races AND pets equally horribly.
What I can't understand is, if you have the perspective that any being is inferior to you, why would you not treat them BETTER instead of worse?
(Watch, now the next excuse we'll hear is THAT'S why they used these terms, they were "showing compassion towards lesser beings - erm - they meant less fortunate", as if they know the difference.)
Unless maybe they don't really believe they're inferior to us at all, just as we don't, and they're just scared - scared there's not enough resources to go 'round or room at the top - unlike us, who believe there's plenty of room for everyone and the more the merrier:)
I have often found it curious that those needing to believe they are superior to other races also tend to live in the bible belt and have wondered how they could reconcile racism with Christianity.
Perhaps those believing in white Christian superiority are unaware that had we actually lived back in bible times and ended up in Africa or Mesopotamia somehow, we wouldn't have been the "superior elite"; we would've been the uncivilized minority, then. Because they were successfully running civilized kingdoms while we were still living in tribes and wearing kilts.
They also tend to overlook Song of Solomon from the bible, which clearly states the wealthy Shulamite woman of equal status to Solomon was black.
But then isn't that just like fundamentalists; overlook parts of the bible that don't support their superiority;)
Regards my first post - sm

When I mentioned poor "sweet thing" and
"grateful" and the comments being born of ownership, it was not condoning the attitude (it was also subtle). Sort of trying to let people know that if they actually think that way they might be making racist comments.
As for the dog issue, I used that example to show my utter disgust for how people treat one another.
Frequently, I have found people who think of people this way have even less respect for animals.
i.e. I'm pretty sure we are saying the same things, just with different explanations.
Oh, I knew you weren't, and yes we are saying the same thing:) - see msg to clarify
[ In Reply To ..]
I was trying to take what you and I already realized was an absurd perspective (but others may not, as you said) to an even more absurd place to illustrate just how absurd it was, but it failed miserably lol.
I also was trying to make people understand we weren't always considered the "superior" or even "civilized" race in history, particularly to "bible-belt" folk, who are often also racist for whatever reason.
I started to edit to clarify my point, ran out of time today due to an appointment, sorry about that:)
PS - ok I edited/clarified my initial response above to clarify (I hope:) - had less time today, sorry!
My missed point was that only whites are allowed to complain about anything - blacks are bashed when they do
[ In Reply To ..]
The IRS was just one of the problems I mentioned, but actually, I haven't had a problem with the IRS. And I may be wrong, but the IRS isn't a huge concern for African-Americans. Regardless, the point was, it seems to be okay for whites to complain about anything they like, but a black person complains about the same thing or anything at all and they're "ungrateful."
As I said, I don't have a problem with IRS, but then I don't have a problem paying taxes, so I don't try to find ways around paying them and pay them on time. It's not my favorite thing and I don't always think it's fair, but yes.
Once I received a corrected W2 in June and found I owed much more but didn't have it at the moment. Ever called the IRS? They're actually extremely nice because they know their former reputation. They gave me time and a payment plan, no problem.
I realize that some people haven't had that experience and as with all government (or corporate) bureaucracies, stuff happens that shouldn't. And I realize there's a lot of government waste and there are some things I'm not crazy about my money going to. But there are some things I'm glad my money's going to, too.
If it goes to a program that helps even one person in my country who needed it and I can help, I am glad it did. Because as bad as we think we've got it sometimes, there is always someone who's got it worse than we do.
I bet Denzel doesn't even know he is an Uncle Tom. - LOLOL
Oh I bet he does, he's no dummy, nor is Ben Carson as another commenter said - But I adore Denzel (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
Now, you know the far right wouldn't like either of them if they ever dared mentioned racist obstacles they've had to overcome, they wouldn't see their movies or vote for them if they did.
No one said either Ben nor Denzel were stupid.
The difference is, I adore Denzel Washington, in part BECAUSE he puts God first in his speeches and is noble. He doesn't think because he plays a hero who can save the world that he actually can, he shows humility, which is an admirable quality in any human, black, white, latino, etc.
Unlike Ben Carson, who thinks just because he can save lives in the operating room that makes him qualified to save the world, and runs around arbitrarily calling his political opponents "psychopaths" to win elections, apparently being completely unaware the position he's applied for requires the utmost diplomacy skills.
That's where you're wrong. You, too, are putting them in a box - Truthhurts

Denzel is a left liberal, not as "strict" as the progressives, but liberal enough. Ben Carson is a right conservative. Hardly anyone dislikes them because of their color. They dislike them because of their leanings.
Ben Carson is disliked because he leans right conservative AND is a Republican, so the left liberal progressive Democrats don't like him and call him an Uncle Tom.
Denzel is a left liberal and I love his acting but hate his politics, as do many others, but you don't hear anyone calling him an Uncle Tom, neither the left liberal progressive Democrats OR the right conservative Republicans.
I explicitly said why I liked Denzel's character better than Ben's, having nothing to do - political parties
[ In Reply To ..]
And I gave specific examples of why I liked Denzel better than Ben, which had nothing to do with skin color OR politics. If anything, I like Denzel better BECAUSE he's not a politician at all, nor a typical Hollywoodite.
Denzel has never declared his politics, actually, and refuses to do so until some journalist pushes him with questioning, trying to shove him in one box or the other politically, like Katie Couric did. (I like Katie Couric, but she does do that sometimes). Speaking of which, I don't think he came off sounding liberal in that interview, very famously.
I think it's issue-by-issue with him, as it is me, rather than taking a strict party line anyway, which is the way I think it should be.
If a person is either trying to figure out if whether to like someone or not based on which political box they fit into, I feel sorry for them, they can't separate the person from the issue, but that is their problem, not mine OR Denzel Washington's.

This poster said: "Hardly anyone dislikes them because of their color. They dislike them because of their leanings."
I won't go into details, but a couple of years ago about 8 people I was with had the occasion to inadvertently run across a KKK rally. We were a diverse group of 5 white Americans, 2 black Americans, and 1 Hispanic American (mixture of men and women). OMG. Let me just say that I was afraid for my own safety, and I am white.
Like I said, not going into the sick details, but the entire situation was diffused by one of the KKK idiots recognizing that 2 of the people in our party were professional athletes of considerable wealth (1 white, 1 black). The most pathetic display of utter stupidity I have ever seen in my life, to be honest with you.
Believe me when I tell you that there are a very large number of people in this country that see Ben Carson, Denzel Washington, and Barack Obama in the exact same terms, and it has absolutely ZERO to do with their political leanings.
People on this board are constantly talking about how people need to take their "head out of the sand." Well, let me just say that this statement applies here very nicely.
Racism is alive and well in the South, and I'm guessing it's not much different in many other parts of the country. Fact.

was encouraging the students. Denzel is a big time far left liberal. Just because he didn't put down the college graduates, he's an Uncle Tom? I find that shameful that some people would think that way.
Michelle wasn't giving much encouragement. In fact, I felt she put the students in a box that insinuated that they will never be able to go far in their lifetime because of their color. That isn't exactly encouraging those students.
Today's kids have to fight hard for a job and commencement speakers should be encouraging them that they can go far if they put their mind and body to it. There is no color line when doing that.

She charged the Class of 2015 with taking up the cause of advancing the progress of African-Americans.

The Obamas will leave the White House, but they're not going anywhere. In fact, once they leave the office, it will actually probably be quite freeing from their point of view. They'll be a lot more free to speak their minds and take up causes where the office of the presidency might have held them back.
And the sad fact is that some people will still hate them for the mere fact that they're just who they are. It's really pathetic in this day and age.

Hannity and company’s derogatory comments on Obama’s speech included the following:
◾Hannity: “My initial observation is […] Barack Hussein Obama got elected by a majority of white America. Why is she so angry?”
◾Deneen Borelli: “Listen, I see this as propaganda. Instead of promoting how America is an exceptional country, Sean, she took that route to play the race card and race bait.”
◾Mike Meyers: Which racial ideologue do you know that’s not angry? She sounded like Hillary Clinton in that racial dialect. [Proceeds to make monkey noises, no I am not kidding]
◾Christie: Her message should have been uplifting […] It was a ‘poor me’ speech […] She just sounded so angry and so defiant.

LOL, Brilliant! Michelle saying "If you have faith in God's plan for you, then you will - fulfill your duty" was completely missed
[ In Reply To ..]
Oh.My. Lordy, I fell out of my chair just now, laughing. Edgy, yes, but true. For those who can't/won't watch it, Angela McCleod, who said in typical Fox-News speculation-in-lieu-of-fact style, said: "She probably got into Princeton because of Affirmative Action".
Wilmore responded:
"Whoa, slow your roll, Fox's convenient black friend - affirmative action is when a coke-snorting alcoholic son of a CIA director DUI's his way into Yale and ultimately into the Oval Office because his daddy was in both places, THAT'S Affirmative Action. But you're mad because a black woman came from the bottom and now she's here? Okay. Any other black-on-black female crime going on there at Fox?"
Then he played a clip of Deneen Borelli saying she ought to be telling them how to rise above it and overcome like she did.
Wilmore said: "Just because you say words? Doesn't mean they're true. Actually watching the clip helps."
And again, the clip featured the exerpt from Michelle's speech which said: "If you have faith in God's plan for you, then you will keep fulfilling your duty."
Note: Fox News got two black women to spin first wild speculation, then a straight-up lie, about their own race. Nobody every said their weren't Aunt Tomasina's still in this day and age too.
Having said that, I'm not a huge Affirmative Action fan myself, I think the best candidates should be chosen for college or job not based on the color of skin.
But even if that were true, Michelle was helped by Affirmative Action, Aff Act may help African Americans go to school, but usually not Ivy League schools like Princeton - that was all Michelle that got the grades and scores to get herself into Princeton:)
