Has anyone read this free kindle book?

Posted: May 28, 2012

The book is a work of fiction but based on facts.  I was blown away by what I read and learned from reading this book.  It does not really surprise me that the drug company has put profits in front of human safety, but to put a drug on the market that is so toxic, it has a warning label that says to wear protective clothing when handling this drug and may be harmful if swallowed!  Yes this the warning on AZT and they were passing it out to people who were not even sick!  There is also the hypothesis that HIV and AIDS are not even related, which the facts presented cause me to lean towards believing that.

That is an utterly stupid, error-filled pile of nonsense - sm

Sorry, but that book is ludicrous. The author is a conspiracy theorist. What he claims is factually incorrect garbage. He knows it is, too -- that is why he calls it fiction.

The association between HIV and AIDS has been established. AIDS, with the deaths from opportunistic infections occurred BEFORE anyone was ever treated with ANY drugs. The first inkling that we had of a new disease killing gay men occurred when they started dying of Pneumocystis pneumonia and autopsy showed them to be infected by multiple other organisms and to have Kaposi's sarcoma.

If you are looking for something more worthwhile to read, try looking up the psychology of conspiracy theorists. It is far more interesting. and might help you see how to read critically so that you don't get sucked into believing divel like that book.

The fact that something is in a book does not mean it is correct.

Thank you! - I wanted to respond to the OP

but whenever I read or hear nonsense like that, my head wants to explode and I lose the ability to communicate articulately.

Your very cogent, reasoned response was spot on. Thank you.

Sadly the nutcases and conspiracy theorists are able to accumulate followers among the gullible and ill informed and, as you pointed out, those who have not learned to read critically. That is where the danger lies. There is nothing to fear from the imaginary boogey men that exist only in the fevered imaginations of the whackos.

I like conspiracy theories as much as the next - but I can tell you from experience...

I now am living with HIV which before I got treatment had developed into full-blown, CDC definition AIDS (down to about 10 T-cells) and literally at death's door. Within about 2 months after starting Combivir (AZT plus something else) and Sustiva. Now I just take Atripla (1 pill per day). My immune system bounced back and today I enjoy extremely good health and am looking forward to living long enough to retire.

Read this instead - Maggie May

Read "My Own Country: A Doctor's Story" by Abraham Verghese. This isn't about AZT, but it's about how and when AIDS was first discovered. I found it to be a fascinating book.

I have not read the book you refer to on my Kindle, but when I was in college, I read the book, And the Band Played On, by Randy Shilts. It was written 20 years ago and is still considered a masterpiece. It was also a nominee for the National Book Critics Circle Award. It goes into detail from the beginning in Africa through political issues to the flight attendant who carried it to the USA. Very interesting!!

Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich. Since so many of us, of course, can no longer afford to buy luxuries like books, it's worth mentioning that your public library almost certainly will have it (though there's likely to be a waiting list, even though it was first published in 2001). For those who persist in blaming others here on MTStars who are struggling with our new working-poor reality, saying that the problem is their "attitude," another Ehrenreich book, Bright-Sided, also w ...

Does Anyone Have A Kindle? Sep 16, 2011
My daughter is going to be 14 in a couple of weeks. She loves to read and goes through tons of books. She has been hinting at a kindle, but also wants an ipod touch for games and music.  If any of you have a kindle can you tell me if you can download and play music on it and download and play games? It looks like you can buy games at Amazon, but I wasnt sure on that and about the music. I would rather buy her the kindle because she loves to read and because it isnt too bad price-wise. They ...

Question About Kindle/FireworksJan 30, 2012
My mom just came home after a grueling 9-day stay in the hospital for COPD, CHF and intubation with successful extubation.  She needs to stay quiet and rest to get her strength back but she can only read so many magazines and, as we all pretty much know, daytime TV isn't the most entertaining thing in the world. She lives in the foothills and doesn't have internet; her only option is Wild Blue satellite internet which...well, is pretty substandard from my experience. I'd lo ...

The Shack -- I'm Almost All The Way Through This Book AndJul 14, 2010
was wondering if anyone else has read and what they thought.  Heresy or enlightening?  For a while now, I've been looking for a deeper, more personal relationship with God, but haven't been able to find it.  I hear testimony from fellow Christians about this wonderful relationship they have with God.  How they talk to Him and they can feel His presence and He responds maybe not verbally, but they "hear" Him.  So a friend, who isn't a churchgoer but spiri ...

Obama Has The Book Thrown At HimOct 11, 2010
This is the astonishing moment a book was apparently hurled at the head of President Barack Obama during a campaign rally in Philadelphia. The flying missile narrowly missed hitting the President yesterday. It is not clear what the book was, where it came from in the crowd, or why it was thrown at Mr Obama - who did not appear to notice the danger. Duck, Mr President! A book narrowly misses Barack Obama's head after it is thrown on stage during a rally in Philadelphia today ...

Appalled At Book In B&N And Its PlacementJun 27, 2011
I am not a goody two shoes or a puritan, but  a Barnes & Noble I was in this weekend has the new book "Go the F to Sleep" at the very bottom of the escalator on a shelf so that when children are leaving the upstairs children's section, it is at eye level for them to see. I glanced through the book, was completely disgusted by it, asked for a manager, made my complaint and handed him the 7 books in my arms to him and asked him to please re-shelve them as I would spend my money elsew ...

America's Book Of SecretsJun 14, 2014
I'm just venting on this subject. I've seen this episode a few times but I always like to be reminded of the protocol and procedures.I do wish people (not just people on this board) would watch America's Book of Secrets...there is one episode from 2010 that explained what happens with the essential government officials and what to do in case of an attack by our enemies. I've seen so many people put Bush and Cheney down for "hiding" during 911.
