Question about Kindle/Fireworks

Posted: Jan 30, 2012

My mom just came home after a grueling 9-day stay in the hospital for COPD, CHF and intubation with successful extubation.  She needs to stay quiet and rest to get her strength back but she can only read so many magazines and, as we all pretty much know, daytime TV isn't the most entertaining thing in the world.

She lives in the foothills and doesn't have internet; her only option is Wild Blue satellite internet which...well, is pretty substandard from my experience.

I'd love to get her a Kindle/Fireworks so she could do some light cruising of the internet and also have a wide selection of reading material she might enjoy.

My question is, has anyone tried a Kindle/Fireworks or similar device using a wireless internet server?  If so, might I ask which one you used and about how much per month I should plan on it costing?

Thanks so much in advance for any tips!!!

Kindle - May not be much help

Just bought a Kindle Touch last week, and I download from my wireless cable internet. The entire Kindle Bible downloaded in around 30 seconds, and there are loads of freebies.

The "Touch" is less sophisticated than "Fire," but, just so you know, the Kindle products are WAY fun, pretty intuitive (I don't like reading technical instructions but got by just fine), and I read 3 books last week. FUN! I highly recommend these; they're easy on the eyes and hands.

Kindle Fire - wimt

My daughter, 11, got a Kindle Fire from her grandpa and grandma for Christmas. It is great! I have an Ipad and I think her Kindle Fire is very similar. She gets on the internet, watches You Tube videos, has downloaded some of the free apps from the Amazon store. There are lots of free apps along with the pay ones which aren't expensive at all. She has downloaded books on to it as well, and there are lots of free books that can be downloaded from Amazon along with the ones you can buy. The Kindle Fire already comes wifi ready and there's no additional monthly charge beyond what you would pay for your internet service.

My mom lives up in the foothills so she'll definitely have to a wireless AT&T connection or something of that sort (I live in town with cable so a lot of this stuff is really foreign to me). I'll have to check out what options are available in her area...thank you for letting me know it is compatible with wireless internet!

Also, does the Kindle or Fire come with things such as crossword puzzles, word finds, jumbles, things of that nature? She loves all of those things and if she can read, cruise the internet AND work her puzzles, I think even though she's a newbie to all things tech, she should catch on really fast, lol!

Thanks so much for the advice, I really appreciate it. I'd have been so upset had I bought her one and then found out it wasn't compatible with a wireless connection, and I know she'd have been really disappointed, too. This is sounding more like the perfect gift for her all the time.

TIA!!!

I have a Kindle and while it did not come with word games, you can find free downloads by searching the Amazon site. Books, too. I have to say that I was one of those people who went kicking and screaming into the digital book age, but now love my Kindle. Do wish I had waited for the Fire, though.

Just had a thought: Does your mom have a computer? You/she could try to download the Kindle software onto the computer and see if you can download a free book or game.

Does Anyone Have A Kindle? Sep 16, 2011
My daughter is going to be 14 in a couple of weeks. She loves to read and goes through tons of books. She has been hinting at a kindle, but also wants an ipod touch for games and music.  If any of you have a kindle can you tell me if you can download and play music on it and download and play games? It looks like you can buy games at Amazon, but I wasnt sure on that and about the music. I would rather buy her the kindle because she loves to read and because it isnt too bad price-wise. They ...

Has Anyone Read This Free Kindle Book?May 28, 2012
The book is a work of fiction but based on facts.  I was blown away by what I read and learned from reading this book.  It does not really surprise me that the drug company has put profits in front of human safety, but to put a drug on the market that is so toxic, it has a warning label that says to wear protective clothing when handling this drug and may be harmful if swallowed!  Yes this the warning on AZT and they were passing it out to people who were not even sick!  Ther ...

I am making a blueberry pie to take to my stepfather tomorrow, and I thought it would like nice to use a cookie cutter in the shape of a bell and apply that piece of crust to the top of the pie.   If I use a little bit of water to attach it, will it bake to the top crust securely?  A lot of you sound like you are pretty handy in the kitchen!   The lemon sponge pie I made for Thanksgiving was wonderful.  Thanks to the person who suggested the allrecipes.com webs ...

I'm always facinated at some people who think all social problems and situations are so black and white.Abortion is here to stay, whether it's legal or not, just like it's always been an option when a woman finds herself facing the impossible situation of an unwanted pregnancy. Wishing it wasn't an option has never worked. However, when a discussion comes up about abortion, we women are strictly divided. Black and White in our opinions. This is a complicated issue. It doesn ...

Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...

May Be Having A TAH-have A QuestionJun 23, 2011

E-Bay QuestionNov 19, 2013
Hi everyone, I absolutely love Swarovski Crystal, in particular their earrings. I have a couple of pairs that I paid full price for, but they are too expensive. (Earrings run from $60-$300+.) I saw that E-Bay has a really nice selection, and you can just do a Buy Now for way under market price--I'm not into the bidding thing, BTW. Thing is, how do I REALLY know it's Swarovski? My family and I are selling our house and moving out of state, but our house is going to sell before we actually move, so we have to rent a house for about 6 months.  So, I went to look at a house over the weekend and was amazed!  For $1300 a month, it was a 3 bedroom house, very old, and a total wreck.  I mean, dirt everywhere (did they ever clean??), cats roaming and the smell!  Just amazing what a dump it was, which is a shame because it could be a gorgeous house.  So ...
