Does anyone have a kindle?

Posted: Sep 16, 2011

My daughter is going to be 14 in a couple of weeks. She loves to read and goes through tons of books. She has been hinting at a kindle, but also wants an ipod touch for games and music.  If any of you have a kindle can you tell me if you can download and play music on it and download and play games? It looks like you can buy games at Amazon, but I wasnt sure on that and about the music.

I would rather buy her the kindle because she loves to read and because it isnt too bad price-wise. They have one for 114.00 and one for 139.00 that look pretty good. An ipod touch is about 289.00!!!

Thanks for any info! I am thinking of ordering today, but was hoping to get some opinions first. :)

My bro got me one this past Christmas. Beyond reading, they have some games for sale as well as free. Yes, you go through Amazon, and it takes seconds for the book you bought to load onto the Kindle. You can also do it straight from the Kindle; I just never have. Also, if she's going to be 14, she'll probably have to do book reports on old classics, and they have a lot of those free or way cheap. Good luck!

I have a 13 yo daughter and she would rather have her ipod than her phone.

You can get a app on a ipod that is a kindle where she can read books.

You can also text to a ipod.

If she is like my daughter she would rather have a ipod. My daughter reads all the time and she really likes the kindle app on her ipod.

I have a smartphone and do use my Kindle app ALL the time but I'm pretty sure my own teenaged daughters would MUCH rather have an iPod touch than a Kindle.

I love my kindle (mine is an older version than they currently sell, but the new ones have even better contrast). It is the best for reading books. You can also load up songs on it, as well as get games. An ipod is definitely better for music and games, though. I do not like ipods (phones, ipads, nook color, etc.) for reading books because they are backlit. Not to mention the screen on an ipod is much smaller and harder to read from. The e-ink on the kindle really cannot be beat for reading books. So I guess it depends on what is more important to her: Reading books or games/music. :)

I totally gave away my age! I had no clue you could use a Kindle app (heck, I don't even own a cell phone as we can't get coverage in our area) w/ an ipod. BTW, you probably also figured out I have no kiddos! :0

Thank you for your responses! - Questions

I am really leaning toward the kindle. It is much cheaper and if it does some games and music then she will be happy with that. She isnt a huge txting/electronic junkie like my 16 y/o daughter and others her age. Thanks again!

Anyone know if you can get text books on Kindle? I've been thinking of getting my husband one, and since he's back in school, that would be an extra benefit...

I have a Kindle and an Ipod - But if I had to do it over again

I would probably go for one of the newer smart phones like a Droid, and I am not really a big phone person. On the phones now uou can get books, music, games, all sorts of interesting "apps" such as GPS, learning tools, social networking, camera, access to the internet, videos, etc. The downside is you have to pay monthly for a data plan, maybe more than you might want to spend on a child, but if she already has a phone, may be worth considering.

I have an iPHone that I disconnected as a phone because of the $75 monthly fee to ATT. It still has internet access as long as I'm either at home with my wireless access or in an area where there is a wireless connection.

on Kindle, but I'm not sure which ones. I would check on Amazon, and also check at the school.

How about a new Kindle, and a use iPod? - Maggie May

Every time a new iPod version comes out, people sell their old ones on Ebay. So you could save a lot of money on a used iPod and still get her a Kindle. Just a thought.

I got both my Kindle and Ipod - on Craigslist (both new). NM

Android Tablet/Ereader - hannaMT

I bought an Ereader/multimedia player similar to this one. Mine does not have internet access but this one does.

It is a heck of a deal compared to most dedicated Ereader and it supports epub, pdf, html and txt formats for reading.

Here is the link to the geeks.com site and the Android tablet.

Thank you hannaMT!! I found one for 89.00!! It has wifi, internet access, does music, books, and games. I am very excited for my daughter to get it next weekend at her party. Where do you get your books/music to download? Can I still go to Amazon and get downloads from there or somewhere else? Thanks again!

Question About Kindle/FireworksJan 30, 2012
My mom just came home after a grueling 9-day stay in the hospital for COPD, CHF and intubation with successful extubation.  She needs to stay quiet and rest to get her strength back but she can only read so many magazines and, as we all pretty much know, daytime TV isn't the most entertaining thing in the world. She lives in the foothills and doesn't have internet; her only option is Wild Blue satellite internet which...well, is pretty substandard from my experience. I'd lo ...

Has Anyone Read This Free Kindle Book?May 28, 2012
The book is a work of fiction but based on facts.  I was blown away by what I read and learned from reading this book.  It does not really surprise me that the drug company has put profits in front of human safety, but to put a drug on the market that is so toxic, it has a warning label that says to wear protective clothing when handling this drug and may be harmful if swallowed!  Yes this the warning on AZT and they were passing it out to people who were not even sick!  Ther ...
