Tips on making a shadow box

Posted: Dec 10, 2015

I decided to make one for Mr. Nik for Christmas with some mementos.  I bought the box (plain black wood and fairly deep), but that I look at some completed shadow boxes online, I am overwhelmed by how lovely they are (but intricate)! Has anyone here made a shadow box and if so are there some helpful hints you can give a first-timer?

I actually made one years ago for my bathroom. the décor was beachy, so I got a piece of decorative paper from my local craft shop and glued that to the back which made it look like sand/surf. Then I added all the things we had collected over the years from our beach vacations and of course, added in some beach critters, also from my local craft shop. It was a fun and was a treasured memory for years. If it is more personal, maybe you could get a picture that is very special to you and copy it and put it as the background, and then add things that you have. Have fun with it..... Homemade gifts are the best gifts to get.

Thanks for your suggestions on design and things to use and also grouping in sets of 3. Did you use a hot glue gun for most things or a glue stick? I'm thinking glue gun for the heavier things, maybe the glue stick for paper items.

Yes - Rusty

That is exactly what I did. Used the glue stick on the decorative paper and glue gun on heavier items. Good luck and have fun doing it.

VR TipsMar 13, 2013
Does anybody have any ideas on how to improve my speed with VR?  It's supposed to be so terrible to take your hands off the keys, but we have to do that constantly to hit the arrow key, the control key, the delete key, etc.-- then when we need to make a correction, we have to put them back on, and I always put them back on in the wrong place.  It seems as if we need two extra hands.  Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks. ...

I Need Organizing TipsFeb 25, 2011
Has anybody out there gone from an office where paperwork is everywhere to a serene, organized work environment?  What changes did you make to bring this about?   I share a home office with my husband.  He lets paperwork pile up (medical stuff, school paperwork, as well as work-related - even junk mail sometimes, if he thinks there might be anything interesting in it) and things really get out of hand quickly in our office. I want to walk in and see everything put away with clear ...

Wrinkle TipsJan 17, 2015
Help, please!!  I am turning 40 this year and I have started getting the lines under my eyes and I hate them.  Does anyone know of any creams that I can buy that legitimately do help with face wrinkles.  I'm an MT, on an MT budget, so I'm talking Wal-Mart or pharmacy creams, not anything super expensive.  And, one more question.  Also facial makeup.  Anyone know a good base foundation that covers wrinkles really well?  Again, I'm talking Wal-Mar ...

I Am About To Frost My Hair. Any Tips?Nov 09, 2010
I actually have Loreal in a box but also went out a year ago and bought the individual products.  I finally have the nerve to do it as my hair is dull mouse brown and long - and now looking lifeless and bland.  I am 50 and want to enjoy long hair for a bit longer before I chop it off for convenience sake.   Should I make small streaks or bold. Wash it out fast or go for the sun streaked look.   I just wonder if you could tell me how to not screw it up.   Thank you. ...

More Money-Saving TipsOct 15, 2013
I had wanted to respond to money-saving ideas but didn't get to it until the post was way, way down the screen! I go to the Goodwill or Salvation Army. These days, they're like regular shops. Everything is clean, not ripped or stained or anything. The ones by us have the racks color-coded---if you want a pink shirt, you go to the shirts and from there, the pink shirts are all in a row. If you need green pants, you go to where the pants are, and the green pants are all in a row. T ...

Any Tips On Finding Decent Doctor?Jul 08, 2010
Went to a new doc after many years of not going.  As I was speaking of a series of upsetting deaths and started to cry a tiny bit, he just kept clicking away on his lap top (and maybe nodded a couple times).  Aside from that, my TSH was in the normal range (but near one end) and no free T3 or T4 were done, but I have had numerous thyroid symptoms for 12 years or so (didn't realize they correlated for several years and never had it assessed).  He said my TSH was VERY normal so ...

Any Tips On Using Cold Water To Defrost A 17-pound Turkey?Nov 17, 2011
I usually buy fresh birds, but opted for the more budget-friendly 39-cents-per-pound rock-solid frozen version this time  This turkey will be cooked before Sunday (hving an erly get-together), so I don't quite have enough time to defrost it in the fridge.  The instructions suggest submersion in "cool" water in the sink for 30 minutes per pound, with frequent water changes.  It has air-tight vacuum sealed packaging.  I'm thinking that changing the wat ...

Rove’s ‘shadow RNC’ Benefits From Supremes’ Citizens United DecisionJul 08, 2010
By David EdwardsWednesday, July 7th, 2010 -- 2:24 pm A recent Supreme Court decision hailed by Republicans but condemned by most Democrats may be helping to stuff the coffers of conservative political groups founded by Karl Rove. President George W. Bush's former senior adviser admitted to Fox News Tuesday that his American Crossroads 527 and Crossroads GPS groups have benefited from the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. The Republican National Committee actually lost money ...

Making A WillAug 12, 2010
How many of you have set aside time to make your final wishes known?  I kept saying I was going to do it, and today at least I have written in a tablet all vital information my family needs to know, phone numbers, bank info, etc.  Money is so limited, but I want to have a formal will done very soon. I saw firsthand what confusion comes of not letting people know simple things.  There are so many details, and I am going to make things as easy on everyone as possible.  I ...

Regarding In-Laws, Making Sure You Do Not Become That MIL.Oct 28, 2010
I have been very careful with my daughter and her husband.  I do not pry and do not give advice unless I am asked.  I am careful to say, "Do you think..." or "I wonder....."  Sometimes my daughter comes to me with their problems and I am quick to say, "You guys need to discuss this, or maybe "This is none of my business," or "I should not be commenting on this."  This has served me well and my daughter and I are very close even though she is busy with small children and ...

Does Anyone Have Any Experience Making Jul 04, 2012
I got interested in this after hearing a radio show about fermented foods and the recipe seemed simple, cabbage, salt, let  it sit out for 4 weeks or so and there you have it.  My cabbage has been sitting out for a couple of weeks now and is actually sort of looking like the sauerkraut you get in the cans.  Has anyone ever made this, eaten it and lived to tell the tale?  Thanks and happy 4th!  ...

Making My Own CalendarsJan 02, 2013
Does anybody else make their own calendars?  I normally would go out and buy 5 to 6 calendars (cheap ones from the dollar stores), but this year I am just feeling creative.  I actually got out my digital camera, which I have had for 4 years and never used, and started taking pictures of my cats and would like to try printing calendar pages and hanging them around the house instead of the store-bought ones.  Any idea what software to use?  I tried HP photo creations, came with ...

HCR Was Never About Healthcare; It Has Been About Making History.Mar 22, 2010
It was made very clear tonight that the politicians voted against what their constituants wanted.  That to me makes a sham of our political system.  We should not be democrats vs republicans; we should be Americans.  What kind of mess are we leaving for our children to clean up and how will they do it if they do not have the education and resources to do it?  This is all being done on fake money.  It will run out, and like many who learned that you cannot buy a house t ...

Another Solyndra Failure In The MakingApr 06, 2013
The government-backed electric car company Fisker Automotive laid off about 160 workers Friday, or roughly 75 percent of the automaker's staff, as it has struggled to find financial backing that would allow it to continue building its high concept clean cars. The layoff announcement came as the innovative start up faces a looming repayment on a loan from the U.S. Department of Energy, and as reports have swirled that it could be preparing to file for bankruptcy. As with the failed sol ...

Bread Making QuestionsJul 17, 2014
Years ago I loved to make bread and have several favorite recipes. I'm going to give up and get a bread maker.  I see they come with recipes, but I cannot tell if you can use your own recipes in them.  Does anyone have any experience with this.  One of my favorites is a receipe for Pioneer Bread which uses some corn meal.  It is not heavy like rye, which I understand does not work well in machines. Any advice on this would be appreciated.  I am becoming alarmed ab ...
