More Money-Saving Tips
Posted: Oct 15, 2013
I had wanted to respond to money-saving ideas but didn't get to it until the post was way, way down the screen!
I go to the Goodwill or Salvation Army. These days, they're like regular shops. Everything is clean, not ripped or stained or anything. The ones by us have the racks color-coded---if you want a pink shirt, you go to the shirts and from there, the pink shirts are all in a row. If you need green pants, you go to where the pants are, and the green pants are all in a row.
They also have bedding, linens, all sorts of things, as well as small appliances and knick-knack type of things. Clocks. Furniture as well, of course.
I always wash everything before I wear it, even if it's from a "first-hand" store. Yuck, all those people touching it, all the formaldehyde in the original cotton bolt, whatever.
Note that while consignment shops are nice, they are almost always more expensive than a church thrift shop, the Goodwill/Salvation Army or garage sales. Consignment shops are designed to be like a regular business with a bigger profit. Not knocking them, but you can honestly do just as well elsewhere.
Garage sales are worth the most caution in terms of rips, pet hair, etc. Look them over EXTREMELY carefully. The Goodwill and Salvation Army tend to look the things over very, very carefully, but you may note some minor things. You have to decide if it's worth it, but to me, it is. They even run "specials." Like, "Women's pants 1/2 off" or whatever.;
Not sleeping on used sheets, used bedding, used - linens, towels and the like

I don't care how sanitary the buyers might try (or not possibly), not this person. Do not want someone else's dishes, glassware and eating utensils. Good that some people want to save doing this but not me.
Do you ever eat at a restaurant? - oh brother
[ In Reply To ..]
Then you're using someone else's dishes, glassware and eating utensils.
LOL - OP
[ In Reply To ..]
That is so funny. I'm one of the ones who doesn't like to buy used eating utensils.
That being said, I do indeed eat in restaurants all the time, but I know that they are required by law to wash the things at something like 140 degrees. Same with linens in a hotel, I believe.
Well... - OP

I know what you're saying. I actually do not buy the linens. I'm funny, I will buy used dishes and glassware, but not eating utensils. Shoes are kind of creepy, too, the idea of it.
I'm just throwing it all out there. I am most interested in the clothing, so that's what I buy, and pocketbooks. Heck, $3 for a shirt, $1.50 for a pocketbook? I'll take it.
I went on a cruise one year and and a fancy wedding another year, and I DID NOT want to spend a lot of money on dresses and such on either one, as when else would I wear these things? I went to Goodwill and bought 2 beautiful cocktail dresses for under $20.
When I lived in a cold climate, I would buy my winter coats for a song. I moved to FL, so I don't need that anymore!
If you have a smart phone - anon

There's a grocery shopping app that is supposed to be really good. It's called Favado (http://www.favado.com)
I don't have a smart phone, so I can't speak to it's efficacy personally, but I know a few women who use it and absolutely love it.
No Smart Phone Here - Budgeting
[ In Reply To ..]
That is something we chose not to get--we just have our fold-up cell with unlimited calling minutes. No text plan. No nothing.
Yeah - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I kind of figured, but thought I'd toss it out there anyway. I don't own a cell phone myself, although my husband has one (needs it for work), but not a smart one either.
I've been tempted to get a smart phone though, if only for the use of saving/organizing/budget apps, but I have to sit down and crunch some numbers first -- see if I would actually save enough via apps to offset the cost of the phone/plan. Ah well.
How is buying a Smart Phone smart? - see msg
[ In Reply To ..]
I think buying a Smart Phone is dumb if you're seriously budgeting. If you say it's only for keeping records, get out a calculator, buy a records keeping book and a pencil. Much cheaper.
Nobody NEEDS a Smart Phone. They're handy for certain things, but in my household, that would just be a luxury.
Since I work from home, I don't need a cell phone here at the house---we still have our land-line. We only have one cell-phone, the fold-up type, and my husband takes that if he's on the road for something. We use it a couple of times a week for long-distance calling of friends and family. If I want to look something up on the Internet, I can look it up at home.
It would appear there are options on our phone for the web and other things, but I don't see where I actually need that.
So Smart Phones are a luxury, in my opinion.
I didn't say it would only be for keeping records - anon

There's a lot of useful apps, plus other tools one can use through a smart phone. A lot of those would be useful to me while I'm physically at the store.
I know it's a luxury. That's why I currently don't have one. =P
I was just having a chit-chat -- not sure why you felt the need to make such disparaging remarks.
Yikes, sorry - Was just...

Posing an opinion. I'll say a Smart Phone would be dumb for me to have, because I'm 58 years old and have managed to get by life without one.
If things in life get to the point where I can't look something up or make a phone call without one, I'm in.... ;)
No, I'm sorry - anon

I was a total jerk. I'm sorry. I've been a miserable sad sack all day and I apologize.
I got my iPhone5 C two weeks at for a bargain - $50 for 16G or $150 for 32G
[ In Reply To ..]
I got the 32G because I know I will start running out of room for apps in no time. We don't have a land line, and the IRS lets me write off the expense for business because it is our only phone.
If you are really into saving money, you could be making money with your smart phone. There is an app called iBotta where they offer you cash when you buy certain products. They deposit the money into your account (PayPal I think?) when you take a picture of the product and upload it with your sales receipt. I have not yet had the time to invest in getting set up, but sometimes when you get 50 cents back here or 75 cents there, it can add up to a nice piece of change.
Agree. Love all those places. - AMT

I am short so most pants are way too long on me but as long as they fit everywhere else I still buy them and have my MIL hem them up for me. If just hacking off a few inches off the bottom is the only thing the pants need, why not? I got an almost new pair of Lucky Brand jeans at GW for $8! Those are at least $100 or more retail. I've found Coach purses (copies?) at GW too for $15. I love going there and filling up a cart full of winter clothes for less than $100 and I got their key card so I get a coupon for 25% on my birthday and I try to shop during special discount days, like Wednesday is 50% off orange tickets. I brag about saving! I will never buy new again (except underwear) unless I have a gift card, coupons, and hit the clearance rack. My local consignment shop has baby/kids clothes cheap too. I go there for all my friends' baby shower gifts. Onesies for 25 cents, heck yeah! One time I bought 12 outfits for $20. :-)

I can't remember the last time I bought a department store item. The only problem is that not everything is marked with a size, but they do offer dressing rooms.
Those places have come a long way! Nice, organized, clean. I wanted a different colored pocket book one time, and I said, "why should I spend over $15 for a stupid pocket book?" So, I spent like $1.50, something like that.
I have a card where you get a discount for each $10 you spend. I'm having trouble getting it punched, though--it's almost hard to spend $10 in there! LOL.
Did you read the OP? - xx

Not really a savings thing - but might be helpful

I've been using a site called mint.com.
It's not a savings site, but a budget site. You can pull in all your information from your bank account, credit cards, other loans/debts, any investment accounts, bills, etc and have it all in once place. It's a great tool for creating budgets and setting goals and it's free.
That's a great site. I also have the ability to do - MT2

that with my credit card. It has a pie chart and breaks my expenditures down. I use it as I get cash back for certain purchases, and I pay it off every month.

Saving Money With CouponsDec 06, 2009Hey ladies - I have a new website that is a great help in saving money while using coupons. It is called thegrocerygame.com. It does cost a nominal fee after the first month, but I have found it so worth it. I think it is about a dollar a week plus the cost of buying your newspapers weekly to get the coupons. It really works good for you though.
I had never used coupons until I was at my sister's last week and she had a closet full of stuff that she was st ...

Talk About Saving Money On My Wedding...Oct 15, 2009Well, yesterday we went downtown to get our license and our excitement got the best of us.
We ended up having the ceremony performed on the spot and walked out as husband and wife, lol! Total cost was $79, as compared to the approximately $250 I had managed to shave it down to by having the wedding at our apartment.
We've decided to use the October 31st date as our 'reception,' and instead of having the actual ceremony on that date, we're turning it into a cele ...
VR TipsMar 13, 2013Does anybody have any ideas on how to improve my speed with VR? It's supposed to be so terrible to take your hands off the keys, but we have to do that constantly to hit the arrow key, the control key, the delete key, etc.-- then when we need to make a correction, we have to put them back on, and I always put them back on in the wrong place. I Need Organizing TipsFeb 25, 2011Has anybody out there gone from an office where paperwork is everywhere to a serene, organized work environment? What changes did you make to bring this about?
I share a home office with my husband. I want to walk in and see everything put away with clear ...
Wrinkle TipsJan 17, 2015Help, please!! I am turning 40 this year and I have started getting the lines under my eyes and I hate them. Does anyone know of any creams that I can buy that legitimately do help with face wrinkles. I'm an MT, on an MT budget, so I'm talking Wal-Mart or pharmacy creams, not anything super expensive.
And, one more question. Also facial makeup. Anyone know a good base foundation that covers wrinkles really well? Again, I'm talking Wal-Mar ...
He's Just Saving Jobs By TheJun 23, 2017I knew these jobs were going yet Trump promised they wouldn't. Workers are feeling betrayed. Carrier was even given a 7-million dollar incentive and they are still going. I feel really bad for the people who elected this jerk and believed him, like the Carrier employees and the coal workers. I also saw on the news today that Boeing is laying off a bunch of people. Where are all these jobs he promised????????? ...
Republicans Are Saving MT!Jul 13, 2017Isn't it wonderful that they are systematically going through the states that increased minimum wage so that the MT companies can continue to employ MTs in those states for slave wages. I Am About To Frost My Hair. Any Tips?Nov 09, 2010I actually have Loreal in a box but also went out a year ago and bought the individual products. I finally have the nerve to do it as my hair is dull mouse brown and long - and now looking lifeless and bland. I am 50 and want to enjoy long hair for a bit longer before I chop it off for convenience sake.
Should I make small streaks or bold. Wash it out fast or go for the sun streaked look.
I just wonder if you could tell me how to not screw it up.
Thank you. ...

Any Tips On Finding Decent Doctor?Jul 08, 2010Went to a new doc after many years of not going. As I was speaking of a series of upsetting deaths and started to cry a tiny bit, he just kept clicking away on his lap top (and maybe nodded a couple times). Aside from that, my TSH was in the normal range (but near one end) and no free T3 or T4 were done, but I have had numerous thyroid symptoms for 12 years or so (didn't realize they correlated for several years and never had it assessed). He said my TSH was VERY normal so ...

Any Tips On Using Cold Water To Defrost A 17-pound Turkey?Nov 17, 2011I usually buy fresh birds, but opted for the more budget-friendly 39-cents-per-pound rock-solid frozen version this time This turkey will be cooked before Sunday (hving an erly get-together), so I don't quite have enough time to defrost it in the fridge. Men And MoneyJan 05, 2012As a single women nearing 50, and having MANY male friends, there is one observation that just MUST be made.
Men constantly complain that women are "only after (my) money," yet all of the men whom I know well who are even moderately "successful," whether married or single, have male friend(s) whom they fork money over to constantly. Usually these take the form of "loans" that are NEVER actually repaid.
I don't know if my married buddies tell their wives about these "loans" or ...
Money Can't Buy EverythingMar 05, 2010While having a general discussion with my 16 years old DS, I used a famous quote "Money can't buy everything" and he said come on Mom, it's a quote from 80's. Now iit has been changed to "Those who say money can't buy everything don't know where to shop".

New MoneyOct 06, 2010Why is this even being discussed (statement/not question). I read the article and I don't like it. The current crowd (progressives/socialists) gets in and all of a sudden there is talk of new currency (and on top of that the currency that does not look real, which I'm sure the uber-wealthy will not be giving up their "greenies", but the rest of the country will be made to use this new fad paper). Fed Wants Their Money Back?Mar 31, 2011By LIZ MOYER And DAVID BENOIT from WSJ online.
One of the biggest secrets of the financial crisis was disclosed Thursday when the Federal Reserve released thousands of pages of data showing heavy discount-window borrowing by foreign banks, regional U.S. banks and institutions fighting for survival.
It was the first time the Fed has given details about banks that borrowed from the central bank's oldest emergency-lending facility. Thursday's move was forced by lawsuits filed by B ...
Asking Husband For Money.May 11, 2011I don't know about you all, but I HATE having to ask my husband for money, for anything!
I make enough money to cover my personal expenses and the household bills and he pays the mortgage, loan on the cars and his personal expenses. We take turns buying the monthly groceries. It comes out pretty even, the only differences is, he has left over money from his check and I do not.
I stopped asking years ago because he'd give me the "where did all your money go" with att ...
Why Does Money Have To Be Such An Issue?Jun 23, 2010Even when it's not the lack of it, but more the equality in spending it. My DH gets very upset and defensive when I suggest to him that he has a whole lot more money in his checking account than I do in mine, yet I'm paying ALL the household expenses, all the vet bills, and ALL the remodeling expenses on the house. He'll make some lame excuse, and then he closes up, shuts down, and sulks. I have more than enough to live on, but that's not the point. I've decide ...
