I don't understand the snarky tone in the article from cnsnews.com. It's hardly fat campish. And what's wrong with having green peppers for a snack? My kids love green peppers.

Anyway, to get back on topic, this is really an instance of "darned if you do, darned if you don't." Imagine what flack the Os would get if they stuck to the traditional Easter festivity of stuffing kids full of sugar.

Being responsible in feeding children may be truly offensive to some, but I'm sure the vast majority of whiners just hate anything the Obama's do and apparently have ample time to get boiled over the details of what healthy snacks were provided.

a 5% sugar tolerance. That is to say, when the class has parties, only about 5% of the items offered to eat can be made of refined sugar. The kids eat strawberries, pretzels, melons, just not a lot of candy. At lunch, when my son brings in sliced red peppers or dried seaweed, he is the most popular kid in the class :-)

We took ours and his friend to a park and let them run it off for the next couple hours. Had to sit on them a couple times when they turned on each other in their overwrought state, but their hyperglycemia eventually resolved. The next day our DIL told us that parents are not allowed to bring sugar snacks for midday treats.

We seemingly have a way to go as a society before we start teaching our children the pleasure of growing and eating vegetables. There are many restaurants here that literally have no green vegetable on the menu. Anywhere. Literally. Potato salad and french fries are listed as vegetables.

Which is where our very nice First Lady comes in. For all the rocks being thrown, her program IS getting talked about and their directions show this is happening above all in those places most in need of it.

This friends family has always treated my husband like one of their own, so it is sort of like an uncle finding a gift for his nephew.
