Americans have to stick their nose into everybody's business so they can come home to accolades of applause and adoration by family, friends and community. Now, coming home involves a little quarantine and you would think they were put in prison. I guess some of them did not know what they were treating over there. Maybe, they need a refresher course on deadly infectious diseases.
There are really good people in this world, if not - for them what would some people do?

Missionaries, Doctors Without Borders, the Red Cross, Unicef, without them others would face more dire straits than they do already. I say hooray for people who want to do for others. Not everyone has a heart big enough nor the time to be able to help their fellow man. These are intelligent people so yes, they would know about infectious diseases in other countries. I applaud them rather than say derograty remarks about them. Now as far as the quarantine: Think it should be done. Most think they are not infectious, better to be sure than not.
That isn't why they do it. They actually care. - Not only that, but it makes a lot - sm

more sense to try to stop Ebola while it's still relatively isolated in just a small part of West Africa. If it hits Europe or the Americas in the same numbers, there'll be no stopping it until a vaccine can be found. Which may or may not happen.

Ban all travel from West Africa until the crisis is over.
Which means all the volunteers who will help end the crisis won't be able to come - back

How is that a solution?
It makes me wonder if people who are of this mindset really want Africa to come out of this crisis.
That would essentially guarantee that the virus - would spread to other countries - sm

because not only would people not want to go there to try to stop it if they wouldn't be allowed to leave, but also others would take roundabout routes to wherever they were going, and wouldn't tell anyone where they'd been, even after they got sick, for fear of getting in trouble. Going to Africa and trying to stop it there is the best way to defeat it. We shouldn't penalize people who are at least trying to do some good in the world.

This should have nothing to do with feelings, and all about protecting our people in this country, period.
So, yes, quarantine. And no travel in or out of infected areas until it gets under control. Period. This could become a world problem, not just a regional problem.
Other people in other countries deserve - protection too, not just "our people".

nurse should understand that. It may not be convenient, or even entirely fair, but considering where she's been, and what she's seen as well as been exposed to while she was there, she really shouldn't be so surprised.
So many seem to be missing the point - anon

of what it means to quarantine. When my mother was a child, they used to quarantine households and put the notices on the front door that the house was quarantined for things like measles, scarlet fever, mumps, chicken pox, and so on. It is a means of containing a disease so it does not become an epidemic. It is deeply disturbing that people on the front lines of healthcare have such an irresponsible approach to containment of something so serious. Just because someone volunteers to work with Doctors Without Borders does not give them free license to infect the rest of the country when they come back. Do a little research on the history of quarantine, both state and federal quarantine acts, the history of Typhoid Mary. A quarantine approach to disease is nothing new. It is a risk to public health not to quarantine. Just how is it that the spread of a largely untreatable disease or virus can be contained without a quarantine? Apparently Africa believes in quarantines because most of Africa has banned travel from the three most affected countries. A quarantine does not prevent healthcare workers from traveling to and from the countries being helped. If somebody knows a better way to contain the spread of this horrible virus, by all means, please speak up. I just don't need to hear about how unfair it is if we do, yada, yada. Life isn't fair, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my life or those of my loved ones just to be nice to a country in the throes of an epidemic. So to your question about the quarantine in NY and NJ, if people don't like it, then they should not travel to NY or NJ. The honor system has been tried more than once since this epidemic started, and clearly there is no honor in the honor system.
Very Well Said - Bravo

Quarantines are as old as the hills and are for the safety of the human race. That nurse who protested it is a flibberty-jibbit if you ask me.
I guess if you don't care about the human race, then you need a head check. It is not being an alarmist and/or being "mean" to quarantine someone, it is being realistic.

My friends and I all share a similar sense of humor, so we often poke fun at one another in a very similar way, so I'm a bit too used to verbal rough housing. I didn't mean to ...

How Do You Feel About Kids And CTs Or X-rays?Dec 08, 2009A lot of doctors that I transcribe for are telling their patients as old as 18 not to get any kind of radiology done that they might not need because of the risk of cancer later in life. When my son was 1 he fell down the basement stairs and the doctor had told me this, but also told me that the risk was very small and that it is better to know than not to know. I think that CTs, X-rays, etc. are good things. I have heard of so many stories where the person goes ...
