I feel the NRA is out of control.

They're threatening to sue the Tucson Police Department because the police department wants to destroy guns turned in via their buyback program. The NRA is upset, saying it's illegal to destroy the guns and they have to be sold to a licensed firearms dealer.
Those guns were willingly handed over by citizens and are now the PD's property. The PD are the people who actually put themselves on the line and deal with situations arising from firearms, and if they want to destroy them, they should be able to without being harrassed by the (unfortunately) most powerful lobbyist group in this country.
Doesn't the NRA have other things to do, like raise $10 million for the next election or something?

"Rathner says the NRA will ask for an accounting of every weapon turned in and then go to court to stop the firearms from being destroyed. If that doesn't work, Rathner says they'll change the law.
"We just go back and we tweak it and tune it up, and we work with our friends in the Legislature and fix it so they can't do it," Rathner adds."

I have no problem with people owning guns, most people do here in Vermont, just keep them locked up people. I am not talking about a fancy gun cabinet with a glass front. I am talking about a gun safe.
Interestingly, Vermont has almost no gun laws, primarily no registration whatsoever, parental permission needed for minors to purchase a gun, no guns in schools or court houses, and no loaded long guns in vehicles (primarily to prevent deer jacking). Maybe it is just that New Englanders are more respectful of guns, but our gun crime is very low. That is not to say that Sandy Hook would never happen here.
I agree the NRA is out of control. No lobby should be so powerful that Congress is afraid to confront them. They are almost at a level of a terrorist organization in my opinion.

This is beyond the pale. There is no reason the NRA should seek to elevate a firearm to the status of the American flag - where destroying it is a symbolic act of insurrection and disrespect for our country.
How ironic that the NRA would seek to dictate how citizens interact with their PERSONAL PROPERTY! And how shameful of them to use legislation - clearly written only to codify how the state treats UNCLAIMED PROPERTY - as a means to grant right-to-life status to a firearm.
