Headed to Colorado on vacation - need ideas

Posted: May 10, 2012

My hubby and I are taking two full weeks off and heading to Colorado on our Gold Wing motorcycle in July. We live in Ohio so we are either going to head north through Michigan and the UP to go to Mt. Rushmore on the way (or on the way back depending on what July weather brings). We will be going through Wyoming, S. Dakota, Colorado and are hoping to get to see the National Arches in Utah (the average temp there in July is 90+ so that may not happen!). We are going to see the sand dunes on Colorado and I am hoping to finally get a hot air balloon ride which is on my bucket list. If anyone has any ideas for us or great restaurants they know about please let me know. We do not have anything set in stone time-wise and just want to get away and head out west and have a relaxing vacation!

Cave of the Winds in Colorado Springs is cool. Also, Seven Falls in Manitu Springs does a light show of the falls at night, its beautiful.

I am so jealous! Love Colorado.

All the ski resorts are great in the summer, with - cool weather, lots of activities. (sm)

You can ride the ski lifts for sight-seeing, or to hike back down the mountain, or to do lift-served mountain biking. You can rent bikes, get a trail map marked with easy/intermediate/expert trails, just like the ski trail maps. Many have nice bike paths in town, summer outdoor music concerts and other special events.

Telluride has an enormous waterfall at the end of the box canyon it's located in. There's a dirt road you can hike up to get to the top of the falls. That was the high point of my weekend there.

There's a long, smooth, scenic paved bike path between Frisco, CO (just off I-70) and Breckenridge. A great day trip. Breckenridge is colorful and cool, a great place to stop for lunch at a sidewalk cafe.

Another great bike path runs along the Colorado River (complete with rapids!) near Glenwood Springs. Great place for a walk or a leisurely ride.

Vail, CO has a pictureque village, great hiking trails on the mountain, lots of fabulous restaurants, and fun window-shopping & people-watching.

Beaver Creek has lift-served mountain biking, as does Steamboat Springs.

One summer I drove to see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. It was amazing! I went in the height of tourist season, and the place was practically empty. There are many viewpoints to stop and look and take photos. Friendly guides to tell the story of Lewis & Clark's hair-raising trip through the canyon.

TIP: Go early or late in the day, so there are some shadows along the canyon walls for the best photos. I went there at noon, and with the sun reaching the bottom, and few shadows, all my photos came out looking flat.

PS! Don't forget Durango, CO! Great town, - surrounded by 14,000 foot peaks. -sm

The narrow-gauge railroad runs all summer between Durango and Silverton, past spectacular scenery. Durango is also a good jumping-off point if you're headed to Monument Valley, the cliff-dwellings of Mesa Verde, or the Grand Canyon. It's also fairly close to Santa Fe, NM. If you enjoy southwestern art, Santa Fe is a must-see!

Enjoy your trip! Just telling you about these places brought back wonderful memories of one of my best vacations! :)

Don't forget to see Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. Take a ride on the train up to the top of Pikes Peak, but remember even in July, you'll need a winter coat! Old Colorado City in Colorado Springs is a treat for tourists, as well as Manitou Springs (which is where the train station is located). Head west on Hwy 24 up to Woodland Park and Florence, Hartsel, and Buena Vista! Scenery is wonderful. Enjoy your trip!

If you can make it go to Mesa Verde National Park. It is beautiful and the history of the Anazazi Indians and the cliff dwellings that are there are fascinating. Have lunch in the restaurant and get the Indian Fry bread, it is to die for.

Ouray, Colorado is a neat little town known as "The Switzerland of the United States". There used to be place in Ouray that would take you by jeep out for a chuck wagon BBQ by a river, one of the best steaks I have ever had.

There are so many neat places in Colorado you will have a great time.

I took my 2 kids to Pikes Peak about 8 years ago - sm

and had a blast!! I really wanted to go to the Peak, but never got the chance. We were only there a few days though. Only thing about CO is the expense. Very high!

So Sad In ColoradoJul 20, 2012
What a sad day for many in Colorado.  You go to see a movie you have been waiting anxiously to come out and someone goes psycho and kills a bunch of people.  They said he bought a ticket and then propped the emergency exit door open to get his guns and bring them back in.  Aren't those emergency exits suppose to have alarms that go off when opened?  This whole things is just so senseless!  My heart goes out to those many families that are now suffering.  ...

Prayers Go Out To Colorado Massacre Victims. Jul 20, 2012
Upon awakening this morning I turned on news and could not believe what I was hearing.  I thought at first maybe this was the anniversary of Columbine shooting.  Then on further listening and waking up, I realized this was entirely different setting and present day.  Tragically enough, 12 had died at a theater in Aurora, Colorado while watching Batman sequel Dark Knight Rising.  Strangely the audience in theater thought this was part of the showing and were not alarmed at fir ...

Colorado's First Pot Rally Marred By GunfireApr 22, 2013
Only two wonded, thank heavens but now that marijuana is legal in Colorado, they want other laws regarding marijuana repealed? What's wrong with this state? Seems like the tokers don't want to follow ANY laws. The two paragraph in that article that really caught my eye and truly disgusted me are these: Lopez and a number of other leaders of the legalization movement said they remain unsatisfied with what they consider the limited scope of Measure 64, which along with forbidding consu ...

Colorado Students Protest Against ConservativeSep 26, 2014
Apparently the school board decided to institute a revisionist form of history books and the KIDS are protesting.  Seems the teachers are not too happy with this school board either.  "They waved signs declaring, “It’s world history, not white history,” and talked about Cesar Chavez and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leaders of the walkout urged others to stay out of the streets and not to curse, and sympathetic parents brought poster board, magic markers an ...

Colorado Supermax Town To Obama: KeepNov 13, 2015
Islamic terrorists have no scruples about slaughtering schoolchildren and that's what worries the residents of Florence, Colorado, when they hear the president talk about transferring up to 61 Gitmo prisoners to the Supermax prison in their small town. It should also concern the prison towns in Kansas and South Carolina that the administration is considering as terrorist depositories. In recent years, Muslim radicals have taken two schools hostage, causing the deaths of 318 schoolchildre ...

So Trump Is On VacationAug 05, 2017
Are all Obama-haters who constantly complained about Obama's vacations and Obama's golf going to say anything about Trump's vacations and golf?  And please don't say he is not costing the taxpayer any money because he is on his own property because he and his family are costing the taxpayer more than the Obamas ever did.  I guess he needed this vacation because "the White House is a dump." ...

My First Ever 2-week Vacation Is Over <sigh>Aug 05, 2012
We took our Goldwing motorcycle, rode 5,167 miles in 15 days. We live in Ohio and went to Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North & South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Kansas, and Missouri.  We rode the train to the top of Pike's Peak, we saw Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, Devil's Tower, Monument Valley, Arches National Park and did a lot of scenic riding.  We saw a moose, curled horn sheep, a coyote, a deer-like animal that we still ...

Good To Be Back From My Vacation. Sep 03, 2012
I was on an "extreme wilderness vacation" for the last week. Canoeing the mode of transport, sleeping in a tent, no cell phones, no TV. It was great; however, I admit I was looking forward to getting home and finding out how the Republican convention went and especially "The Donald's" special surprise. I was rather disappointed when I found out that the Trump embarassment was quashed by Trump's cancellation due to Hurricane Isaac. I have to give the power of prayer over climate cha ...

Five-week Congressional Vacation...Aug 09, 2014
The question was asked below, does it bother anyone that congress is on vacation for five weeks? Yes, it bothers me. Obama's $4M Taxpayer-Funded Hawaii Vacation Nov 29, 2012
Note the "TAXPAYER-funded" vacation. All presidents take vacations, but none this extravagant during such a poor economic time. I guess it's okay, because after all, he "cares" about us. And at least he's "trying." http://www.whitehousedossier.com/2012/11/29/obama-slated-hawaii-cliff/ ...

In Vacation Mode And Hard To Keep My Mind On WorkMay 12, 2015
I have made plans for months, literally months about what I plan on doing this summer. I am taking my friend and her 3 children for a trip to Florida to start off. Stocking Ideas......Dec 20, 2010
Just wondering what everyone uses as stocking stuffers besides the usual fruits and nuts.  I read another post under the DH/SO post about the sweet gifts in a stocking so just thought we could share some tips too.  I usually just fill ours with the usual:  Fruits, nuts, chocolates, batteries to accompany gifts, candies.  My 18-yo informed me that bobby pins would make great stocking stuffers so I might add that this year!
