In vacation mode and hard to keep my mind on work

Posted: May 12, 2015

I have made plans for months, literally months about what I plan on doing this summer. I am taking my friend and her 3 children for a trip to Florida to start off. The woman and 2 kids have never been and they are in for a real surprise! The scenery so different from where we live 1 state over it's like being in a different world. I have everything paid for, everything except food and gas. I pay in advance in installment plans on big items and then smaller places to visit I pay at one time. Discovery Cove in Orlando has excellent deal. You go for 1 price, able to go to SeaWorld, Aquatica (waterpark) and $25.00 extra gets you Busch Gardens for the day. You can visit each of these anytime you want over a 2 week period for no extra cost. That alone takes up 4 days of our week. Next visit is to the great state of Texas. Hold em' cowboys! Visting my friend and her 4 children who live there and we are driving to San Antonio for a few days. Taking all the kids to Six Flags and probably us older folks visiting the Alamo. Last visit (and this one paid for some months ago) is a bus escorted trip up the east coast visiting states like New Hampshire, RI, Mass., Vermont and the like. The #1 draw for this trip was the fact they would be visiting Hyde Park, a home where Franklin Roosevelt once lived and visiting Norman Rockwell's home. I love to hear about other's vacation plans. Who knows, might be a new place for me next year!;

That sounds great - MT

How fun! Good for you! Keeps your chin up on days when work seems dull and also great to reward yourself and friend/kids for your hard work. I am the same way. Thing is, I daydream a lot about doing different things, but then end up doing the same thing every year (a cruise), just because it is all-inclusive (the food) and eating out with my son always may be expensive. Anyway, thanks for this post. It makes me want to dream about vacation and fun things to do. Have a great time!

I don't have a job, so it looks like a "stay-cation" - for me. ;)

I live in FL, and all of Florida can be really rainy, particularly in the afternoons. Check the forecast, and try to plan your outdoor adventures or long drives for the mornings. It's also extremely hot, but that rain does cool it down some for the evening.

Living in Florida as I do, I don't feel the need to get away anymore. I used to live "Up North" and HAD TO GET OUT of the winter doom and gloom in the winter for 10 days. We usually ended up in Florida. It's just glorious here. Even when it's gloomy out, there's no doom as there is always greenery around.

Enjoy your trip. I've done that northeast coastal ride, and it's quite beautiful. Sounds hectic, but fun!

how humid, hot, etc. Florida can be, have visited numerous times before. The costal ride is one that has been done for me, not me deciding where to go, what to do as I have done for the others. I am looking forward to having others pamper me in the fall.

VT!!! - asdf

Went to college in VT...would highly recommend a New England trip to anyone. When will you be going? The fall is certainly a special time for up North. The leaves changing colors attract people from all over and there is a lot of stuff to do. In VT there is Ben & Jerry's, Magic Hat, Teddy Bear Co., Shelburne Art Museum, Ethan Allen Museum. If you go to RI you have to go to Newport. It is hands-down one of the nicest cities in perhaps the entire US. Massachusetts has a lot of history, particularly in the Boston area, and it is definitely a cool visit. The city is beautiful also! New Hampshire doesn't have much to offer other than sweet landscapes, but it sure is gorgeous. Maybe if you hit up the larger cities in NH you will find more activities.

I know you're going on a bus tour and so sightseeing could be limited, but if you like what you see, now you have some places to revisit in the future. :)

So excited about my fall trip going east coast - Time going slowly now

[ In Reply To ..]
So little time, so much to see. I have traveled extensively in years past. My father was with TVA and moved all over the east and since my parents were divorced, my brother and I spent summer vacations, Christmas visiting. I have then on my own after growing up continued my quest for travel and lacking probably about 6 or so states have visited most. The ones I am visiting in the fall are a few left on my list. This is a 12 day bus escorted tour so we will be on the go. Leave our home state and travel to the Pocono Mts, on to Vermont, NY for Hyde Park, Lexington, Concord, Boston in Mass, Cape Cod for 3 nights, Martha's Vineyard, Newport, RI, stopping back in Vermont and having lunch with an Amish family on our way home. Fall time and I asked previously about the weather and here I am just beginning the summer and getting some winter hats to wear in the evenings when out and about. I have a cousin who teaches at Berklee in Boston so have some down time then and hope to spend some time with him and his wife. I get my itinerary just a week or so prior to our leaving so have enough time to map out restaurants close to where we will be staying. Lot of the meals included, some are not and you are on your own. I use Yelp and find places closeby and then check menus and reviews. I think I missed my calling, should have been a wedding planner or something similar. The only issue I have with the trip is probably my shoe issue. I always wear Birkie's, so spoiled and I like the sandals, no enclosed toes! I have some appropriate shoes I can take but I sure do not like to wear them. They are also Birkie's but enclosed toe box. I am so, so excited about this trip. Thanks for the information all!

Sounds like you have some wonderful trips planned - sm

We went to Boston a couple of years ago, and I just loved the Freedom Trail...so much history. My husband teaches history, so we really soaked all that up. This year we are going to the west coast, from San Francisco to Portland. I'm excited, but wish I had it as well planned as your trips.

I love, love to plan my trips, every little thing - about them, but

I always tell the younger folks am going to try because you never know what kind of road block life gives you. I don't work full time now so have time to sit in front of the computer looking at places to stay, restaurants close by, getting reviews, checking out menus, order tickets on line and I start months out, at least 9 months or more until vacation. That allows me the time for all funding I might need. Notes, copious notes. Those are mainly because I forget easily, no short term memory to speak of so notes. I have seen so many states but I was thrilled with Oregon, as far as I am concerned probably the prettiest state I have ever been in. I always heard the beauty of Montana but been to both and Oregon wins with me. Portland is really special, musical, quirky town with lots of nice places to eat. From Oregon we traveled down the coast of California. That was a real treat also, especially seeing the sea lions soaking up the sun on the beach, the huge rocks jutting out in the ocean, what a treat you will have. Enjoy your trip, I know it will be one of a lifetime.

Thanks! I like your idea of keeping notes while planning. - nm

I LOVE to travel. It's a joke that the kids and I are rarely home (they miss school to travel as well but are great students).

Last year we did Washington D.C., Ohio State Reformatory (from the movie Shaawshank Redemption), Kentucky, Tennessee, two trips to Colorado, and the U.P. of Michigan.

This year we've already been to Colorado twice, the U.P. in the dead of winter, we go up north in Michigan almost every weekend skiing. Plans ahead involve some camping (we have a 5th wheel). We actually spend the summer in the U.P. We're leaving the middle of June and coming back sometime in August. Hubby will come up a couple of times to "visit" us. :) We'll head to the Poconos for a trip later in the summer and then Iowa for a family reunion in early fall. November starts ski season so it's up north and Colorado again. :)

Love visiting DC. - Please sm.

I live on the West Coast now, but in my 20s, every year or two friends and I would spend 4-day weekends there. And some of my best childhood memories are from camping trips with a friend's family in the Poconos.

Cruised to Alaska a couple years ago, but I want to go back (non-cruise) and really experience the wilderness. This year, we are planning to be "backyard tourist." Lots of road and day trips in the state of Washington.

Am going to the Poconos, my first visit - there, love Washington DC

[ In Reply To ..]
I would love to go back there and spend more time in the Smithsonian (sp?)and also want to see museum about WWII. Washington, DC is an extremely pretty place with lots of green space. Washington state is beautiful, I think. Just thinking about Mt. Ranier itself is enough to want to get me back again, but then travel is possibly my middle name.

Alaska - wc

Alaska has lots of beautiful scenery to look at and not a lot of roads so easy to travel around.

OP- Have been to Alaska twice now, latest - 2 years ago but agreeing

[ In Reply To ..]
with you about the beautiful scenery and the plus for me were the animals. The first trip I saw scads of animals, even grizzles out in the open, moose all over the place, eagles all in the trees but 2 years ago hardly any animals anywhere, disappointment as that was the draw for me. I took escorted land tour both times (do not do cruises anymore) and the scenery is drop dead beautiful! Anyone who can should make that trip. From where I live can be all day long just to get there but once there, smell the clear air, feast your eyes and have a great time. The only thing I did not like about Alaska was the fact about having stuffed animals, lot of bears, all over the place, in the restaurants, in the airports, just everywhere.

So Trump Is On VacationAug 05, 2017
Are all Obama-haters who constantly complained about Obama's vacations and Obama's golf going to say anything about Trump's vacations and golf?  And please don't say he is not costing the taxpayer any money because he is on his own property because he and his family are costing the taxpayer more than the Obamas ever did.  I guess he needed this vacation because "the White House is a dump." ...

Good To Be Back From My Vacation. Sep 03, 2012
I was on an "extreme wilderness vacation" for the last week. Canoeing the mode of transport, sleeping in a tent, no cell phones, no TV. I was rather disappointed when I found out that the Trump embarassment was quashed by Trump's cancellation due to Hurricane Isaac. I have to give the power of prayer over climate cha ...
