I cannot remember the first book I ever read, but I remember the first one that affected me was Tom sawyer and Huck Finn. These books were great for my sense of adventure when I was young.
Do you want to know the first book we ever read - or the first book that had an affect on us?
[ In Reply To ..]
There is a difference. The first book we read is probably the same all around Dick and Jane. Then we progressed to the Cat in the Hat. The first book I ever read didn't affect me, except that is how we learned to read. Didn't have a choice.
The first book that ever affected me was as I got older I read To Kill a Mockingbird. I wanted to become a lawyer.
The first - grown-upish books

were Black Beauty, Treasure Island and Tom Sawyer. I used to enjoy reading more, but now don't seem to have the time, and have been spoiled by TV.

We all had to read those little books in school that had no actual meaning to pass to the next level, I don't count them, but the first book that looked interesting and you wanted to read it and then got into the characters and the story.

I remember reading a series of books about a nurse named Cherry Ames, and, of course, Nancy Drew.
Hmm. If I recall correctly, 101 Dalmations and - Nancy Drew. sm

One instilled a love of animals, and the other, solving mysteries. BTW, I still have that original 101 Dalmations and a couple ND books (one from the 1940s) that I still occasional read in the summer.

passed it along to me as a 4 or 5-year-old, mainly because of the pictures of many exotic places in the world. I learned to read out of that book, and National Geographic magazines, long before I ever saw a "Dick & Jane" book in the first grade!
One of my favorite stories was about the Blue Grotto on the Island of Capri, off the coast of Italy. When I was 26, I got to see it in person, and it was one of my life's best experiences.
