Do you think this will work - hair coloring question

Posted: Feb 28, 2010

I posted awhile back about the awful black black (tar black) color my hair is from coloring.  I used the suggestions everyone gave.  I did the Prelll thing too.  After one week of coloring and shampooing, the first time I used Prell (let it sit on my dry hair for 15 minutes), when I rinsed it out of my hair you wouldn't believe all the black that still came out.  I was shocked.  So...after 3 weeks of using Prell shampoo (and I'm gagging every time I use it - can't believe I grew up on this stuff - it's a really disgusting smell to it), the gray is starting to come in at the roots.  My hair is still very black.  So..., sorry to get side tracked....here's my question.

I bought a box of light ash brown hair color.  Do you think if I use it, it will lighten my hair some, or do you think it will just add more darkness to my ever pitch tar black hair?

I know it's disgusting, besides being Very harsh. I only used it to get the color out of my hair and then switched back to my regular shampoo.

I think the light ash brown would work. Mine turned out lightish brown, but definitely not really light. I really couldn't tell the difference in color between the gray roots and the dyed dark color.

Let me know how it works!

I have been doing my own hair for years.... - blondie....

I have blonde hair, but I do it myself, and I have messed up my hair more times than I can tell you. I have learned a lot through trial and error. You need to go to Sally's and buy some color correcter. It will strip that black out of your hair. It gives you instructions of what to do. Then put a color you would like.
I have also learned not to buy hair color at Wal-Mart, drug stores, etc. I only go to Sally's. They have professional products there. Most of the mishaps I have had with my hair were from buying stuff from discount stores such as Wal-Mart.
Good luck.

Hair Color - Gina

Before transcription I was a hairdresser for 30 years with my own business...it seems that you are adding color to your entire head each time you color...so on the regrowth is the first color and the rest of the strand has had the color lighted (color contains peroxide) and then what ever color you chose..black, brown, blonde; is then deposited. The rest of the hair is so damaged (lifted) (cuticle of the shaft) and that is why the color came out with leaving on the shampoo. The hair shaft is really not holding color...it is just so damaged. The brown will not work...only on the roots and may temporarily give you a greenish cast (ash)to the rest of the hair...you will need to get the rest cut...that is the only way you will restore the rest to accept color evenly.

Good advice from Gina. . . - I think she is right

same thing happened to me - including using the ash color - big mistake, it did turn greenish.

OMG - Thank God you answered before I did it - Ima goof

Thank you to "I think she is right" for confirming this too. If I think the tar black is bad I'd be absolutely horrified if it came out greenish. I think I am going to just break down and go to my hairdresser and ask her to fix it. I've used Loreal Preference for years and years and had no problems, always loved the color. Then I tried this new stuff that does not have chemicals, but the color is awful. The last time when my hairdresser cut my hair she was laughing and saying you missed a spot, you missed a spot. I think she is kind of hurt I don't have her color my hair. So, think I'm just going to have her fix it. I think if she can fix it then I can start letting the gray come in after that, and at least feel better about it.

Home Hair Coloring QuestionApr 13, 2011
I have colored my hair at home for probably 20 years now. I have a natural medium to dark brown hair but have always colored it really blond. I used to use the really permanant stuff from Loreal and then switched to the more mild Revlon stuff. I always buy the Natural light blond and have to color it every 3 weeks or so. Anyway, I would like to be done with coloring. After this many years I am ready to give up the blond! I have heard that I would need to strip the blond out and then do some kind ...

Question About Hair. I Am Older And Have Rather Fine Hair But I Do Jan 24, 2017
get it foiled with some color in it.  I have been thinking about a curly perm but I am not sure what kind to get and I would have my hairdresser do it.  I dont want a fuzz ball so I am wondering if anyone here has tried this on colored hair just streaked color.  I want a good perm that would last for a while and have curl to it but not tight.  My hairdresser does not carrying prems anymore and the company they deal with does not sell them either.  They are expensive ...

I Have A Hair Question Too, For Those Of You With - SmMay 01, 2011
alopecia areata, have you tried any home remeadies that have worked?  I have gone to the dermatoloigst, have received 3 sets of cortisone shots to the scalp so far, no luck, just a few fine hairs coming in.  It should have all grown back at this point from the injections.  So now we are waiting a year to see if anything changes (been about 2 years already so looks pretty permanent right now).  Doc gave me samples of Protopic but basically said she did not expect it to work bu ...

Work Comp Question For My StepsonAug 19, 2011
My 35-year-old stepson was injured at work 2 weeks ago, got his hand caught in a machine, tore tendons and had to have surgery. This happened on a Wednesday with surgery Thursday morning. He asked his employer for vacation time the following week; the employer said, don't waste your vac time, work comp will cover your pay. On the 13th day, he had an appt with his doctor and as he was sitting in the waiting room his case worker showed up for the appt. The case worker asks in the doctor' ...

Is There Any Help For My HairMay 01, 2011
I understand as we grow older our bodies change, skin gets saggy, wrinkled, loses elasticity, etc and our hair changes.  What I'm wondering is this.  Is there a product, vitamin, or whatever that can make your hair look younger and healthier.  Growing up I had beautiful hair, soft natural curls that the hairdressers said people would die to have curls that are natural like that.  Now at 51 years old my hair is coarse, and frizzy.  I can find some curls here and ther ...

Dog HairJun 14, 2011
For those of you with dogs that shed (like my Golden), can you share you grooming schedule and favorite brush? I've used to use a rake but found a tool that's cheaper than a Furminator (sp?) and doesn't rip the skin. It's made by Oster and called a Shedzilla. I've been brushing him every couple of days but this time of year, I'm wondering if I should do it more often? I like to do it outside to keep the fur out of the house as much as possible. ...

Hair Falling OutFeb 04, 2012
I am devastated right now.  I had long, thick beautiful hair and over the past couple of months I have noticed a big change in it.  Now it is falling out!  Long strands just letting loose.  At this rate, I will be bald in a couple of weeks and that is not an exaggeration.  It doesn't even look or feel like hair.  It is shriveling up and is very light and falling out!  How and why can this happen and will it stop?  Has this happened to anyone? ...

Help - Need Hair Color FixFeb 01, 2010
A few days ago I colored my hair black.  The box said (and looked like it would be a soft black), and it turned out way blacker than I imagined (if that's possible).  I usually go brown, but the reason I went black was to try to get back to as close as my natural color while the gray is coming in.  I really didn't want to color my hair, however, between the brown I last colored it, the gray coming in, and the "soft" black that was mixed in with the gray I had too many co ...

Do You Wash Your Hair Every Day?Jul 02, 2010
I know they say to only wash your hair every other day but I have never been able to do that. I shampoo/condition my hair every day as I cannot stand the feeling of my hair being dirty or greasy-looking or whatever. I am 28 and have pretty long hair and my hair has always been really healthy so I have never tried to force myself to not wash it everyday. Does it really damage your hair? ...

Pink HairAug 03, 2010
Can anyone recommend a product that will cover gray/white roots without turning my hair a pink color?  Some years ago I was using over the counter color and was actually approached by people, telling me my hair was "purple."  I told my stylist and she said the over  the counter products have a violet base, and when applied to brown hair it gives a pretty highlight.  If you apply it to hair that has lost its color it soaks up the violet color and that's what you see.  ...

Wen Hair Care?Apr 15, 2012
Battling insomnia last night, I watched an infomercial for this product and the thought behind it makes sense to keep one's hair at its healthiest (especially if platinum blond, like I currently am). Has anyone tried Wen and, if so, what did you think of it?  I currently use organic products but keep thinking this might be a better option to keep my hair in semi-decent condition, considering how I abuse it with bleach, straightening tools, etc. ...

Hair Dye What To Buy Tired Of ColorsilkDec 03, 2009
I have long hair that usually takes about 3 boxes of dye.  I usually only do it about 2-3 times a year and do the all over color each time because my color tends to fade.  I think hair dye might be one of those things that you get what you pay for.  I usually buy the Colorsilk ($2-$3 at Walmart) because it is cheaper and I am usually broke.  This year I think I will splurge a little and buy a more expensive brand.  In the past I have tried the Herbal ess. and Natrual Ins ...

I Am About To Frost My Hair. Any Tips?Nov 09, 2010
I actually have Loreal in a box but also went out a year ago and bought the individual products.  I finally have the nerve to do it as my hair is dull mouse brown and long - and now looking lifeless and bland.  I am 50 and want to enjoy long hair for a bit longer before I chop it off for convenience sake.   Should I make small streaks or bold. Wash it out fast or go for the sun streaked look.   I just wonder if you could tell me how to not screw it up.   Thank you. ...

No More Brittle Hair Or Dry Skin.Sep 20, 2010
If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter.  The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water.  I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter.  In less than 1 week, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the softness of my hair and skin.  It is like showering in pure spring water.  There is no way I would ever go back to using plain shower water again!  ...

Save Your Hair For PB Oil CleanupJul 05, 2010
In the latest issue of one of my dog journals, there's an article about a place in CA, Matter of Trust, that's collecting dog and human hair to use for helping clean up some of the oil.  Makes sense, since hair absorbs oil (which is why we shampoo).  They stuff iit in nylon stockings and tie the stockings together.  Hair salons and pet groomers would be a great source for this.  For more information and mailing instructions, their website is <matt ...

Curly/wavy Hair Vs Non-curly/wavy HairDec 13, 2012
Feedback, please. Where do you sit in your opinion? Are you happy with your hair or are you envious of your counterpart's hair? Okay, I have wavy/curly hair.  Basically just wavy, but if it's cut short, it's curly. I have an interesting observation. People with curly/wavy hair want straight hair, and people with straight hair want curly/wavy. Being one of those curly/wavy people, I have to stress to you envious people who have straight hair and want wavy/curly, it ...

Anyone Ever Tried That Hair Removal System No No?Jul 29, 2013
I believe it's called the No No???  It is a hair removal system that supposedly you can use for legs, underarms, and EVERYTHING.  Was wondering if anyone had used it and if it works and how long you are hair-free.  I did notice it had a buffing pad with it and I did try a removal system once where you basically and your legs down with what felt like sand paper to remove the hair, but it was VERY time consuming and I would just prefer a quick shave every couple of days as oppo ...
