Help with conversion measurements for a baking recipe

Posted: Sep 17, 2015

I found a recipe for no bake chocolate oat bars, but I'm confused about the conversion rate they have.  (I'll post the recipe below).  They look good so wanted to give it a try.

My question is this...

Is .5 cups = 1/2 cup?  It says - .5 cup, packed (7.8 oz.) Brown Sugar.  When I looked up how many ounces in 1/2 cup the i-net has 1/2 cup = 4 oz.  When I looked up how many cups is 7.8 oz it says 7.8 oz = .975 c.  I've never heard of .975 cups.  So I'm just wodering if it's 1/2 cup of brown sugar.

For the chocolate chips they have - 16 serving Nestle Semisweet Chocolate Chips, 1 tbsp.  Does anyone think they mean 1 Tbsp of chocolate chips.  It's mixed with .5 c peanut butter.  I've never heard of a measurement called 16 "servings".  1 Tbsp to me does not look like it would be 16 servings size.

The measurements are just confusing to me.  If anyone wants to look at the recipe and tell me what they think about it, I'd be happy for some feedback.

Thanks,

(P.S. - they look good and my oven is broke, so looking for a nice no bake desert)

I'm not familiar with measurements like this, but I think the measurements below will work. You're right, 1 tablespoon or 16 choc chips is not enough (not sure where she got these measurements). Let me know how they come out.

1 cup butter
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups quick cooking oats
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter

Grease a 9x9 inch square pan.

Melt butter in large saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and vanilla. Mix in the oats. Cook over low heat 2 to 3 minutes, or until ingredients are well blended. Press half of mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan. Reserve the other half for topping.

Melt chocolate chips and peanut butter in a small heavy saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently until smooth. Pour the chocolate mixture over the crust in the pan, and spread evenly with a knife or the back of a spoon.

Crumble the remaining oat mixture over the chocolate layer, pressing in gently. Cover, and refrigerate 2 to 3 hours. Bring to room temperature before cutting into bars.

Thank you soooo much. Your recipe looks much better - Bad cook

I am eager to try them out. Thank you again for the revised recipe. Somehow seeing 16 chocolate chips and such a low measurement when it looks like a thick layer of chocolate in the middle didn't seem right.

I will let you know how they turn out.

Whoa! Too much butter? - Sm

I think 1 cup of butter might be too much! That is two sticks, isn't it?

I would go with 1 tablespoon. That and the melty brown sugar should be enough to glom up the oats enough.

The weird measurements seem to be for the benefit of nutritionists or something ... people who need to convert package nutrition information, which is in "serving" sizes.

The weight is given for the brown sugar because a cup of brown sugar can weigh more or less depending on how hard you pack it into the cup. If you had a scale, you could just weigh it.

The amount of chocolate chips was just sad! You would have barely any chocolate taste!!! You can't have too few chocolate chips, so yes, I agree with adding more.

It isn't necessary to be precise on these measurements because no chemical reactions are taking place. You can adjust a little and even add things. Maybe a little toasted coconut? Mini-marshmallows?

Thirsty oats - Foodie

There are a few recipes that I make similar to this one, and 3 cups of oats can be very thirsty, they soak up more moisture than you think they do. The first time I made my apricot white chocolate oat bars I started with 1/2 cup of butter and they were dry. Second time I used 1/2 cup of butter and 1/2 cup of cream, good, but still not right. I found using 1 cup of butter was the right amount of moisture with a rich flavor. Maybe 1-1/2 sticks of butter (3/4 cup) and 1/4 cup cream might be okay. I have used coconut in my cranberry date bars and that is very good. I also like chopped honey roasted macadamia nuts or chopped candied pecans on the apricot bars, very tasty. Adding a few nuts to this recipe would be good. I've never tried marshmallows, good idea, I will try that.

It is incorrect for recipes to use decimal points. 1/2 cup is half of 8 ounces, so that would be 4 ounces.

Conversion chart - Foodie

Years ago I found a chart to convert metric cooking measurements to cup measurements, I've referred to it many times in the past. I was able to find something similar on line and I'm posting it here as it may help you in the future. I could not find a conversion table for measurements that included a decimal point like the one you found. It should always read as 1/2 cup or 64 g, not 0.5 or .5 cups.

Baking Christmas Gifts...Oct 19, 2009
At my husband's family get together last weekend, I realized that my husband's family is just too huge to keep buying individual Christmas presents (15 adults and 5 kids, not counting his dad and my parents) plus our 3 kids so I've decided to get nice containers like a hatbox and fill it with baked goods, spiced pecans and jar mixes for each family.
