Any Young Adult Fiction Readers out there?

Posted: Dec 29, 2013

I love getting engrossed in books and lately I cannot find one.  Any other young adult fiction fans have some suggestions?  I loved the V.C. Andrews older books, never could really get into the series within the last five years or so, they changed.  I absolutely LOVED the Twilight Series and read it a few times, which is against what I do, I never usually read a book more than once.  I also really enjoyed 50 Shades of Grey, the first one, but couldn't get into the second one and same with Hunger Games, the first one was okay, couldn't really keep my attention for the second one.

Any great book suggestions that make you just want to find a corner and never stop reading?

I love - Anne of Green Gables, etc...

There are a few "Anne" novels/stories by L.M. Montgomery. They are just delightful and an easy read. Anne of Green Gables is the first.

Check them out. Just lovely. Angst, sweetness, all the stuff young ladies go through. They were written in the early 1900s. There are seven more novels after Anne of Green Gables, but I think if you don't read them in succession, it's okay. If you can, probably all the better.

After Anne of Green Gables is Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla of Ingleside.

They have a "young reader" version, which I actually read when I was in my 30s. It's just the stories condensed, but they're poignant nonetheless.

They are not heavy like V.C. Andrews. I so enjoyed V.C. Andrews, but was wanting something a little more lighthearted after reading those.

Enjoy!

died in 1986. Her estate hired someone to complete a couple of manuscripts she had started, one of them the last one in the Flowers in the Attic series, and he continued to write under her name.

Sorry I can't help you with suggestions. I'm into mysteries. :)

Mysteries here too! - ZvilleMT

I discovered Jonathan Kellerman a couple of years ago and have read every one. And wait impatiently for the next one to come out. You don't really have to read them in order, but it helps.

I read Mary Higgins Clark when I don't have much time and want some very light reading that doesn't take much thought or time.

Not really a mystery, but I made it through Under The Dome recently, all gazillion pages of it, and had to take a break from reading for a couple of weeks after I finished it. :)

Wow - I applaud you :) - ZvilleMT

I only made it just about halfway through Under the Dome and just couldn't make myself finish it - had to move on to something else. Maybe someday I'll go back :)

Will definitely check out Jonathan Kellerman - that's a new one to me. Thanks!

A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin - Daenerys Stormborn of HouseTargaryen

If you really want something to sink your teeth into, this is a great series. Its 5 books...Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings, Feast for Crows, Storm of Swords and Dance with Dragons. I am obsessed....Still waiting for the next book, Winds of Winter

I just started this before Christmas - Absolutely entranced

[ In Reply To ..]
I just cannot put it down, got it on my Kindle. I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about, I don't have HBO so had not seen the show. Now that I am reading and have gotten season 1, I get it. So easy to be obsessed! Highly recommended.

the Inheritance series is good... - ZvilleMT

I forget the name of the author, but it starts with Eragon and there are four books total. They're more fantasy-type books, with dragons, etc. if you like that sort of thing.

Definitely try Harry Potter if you haven't yet - they're fantastic!

I don't normally like Stephen King (too creepy), but his book "11/22/63" was amazing - all about time travel and what ifs.

I also love the Stephanie Plum series from Janet Evanovich - I call them brain candy, 'cause you can read one in about a day or so and they don't involve much thought - just wildly hilarious!

Hope this helps - if I think of anything else, I'll post. I've often thought there should be a book board on this site :)

Not "teenager" books, but ... - sm

I second the recommendation for Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Hysterically funny. Although, if you prefer teenage/YA books for religious reasons or to avoid sex and violence, there is some.

The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith is about as good as you can get.

Also quite good are Lynn Kurland's time travel/Scotland/England series. Look up A Garden in the Rain on Amazon to get names of the rest. Romance novels, humorous, interesting storylines, well-written, but no smut.

Sherwood Smith's novels like Once a Princess (Sasharia en Garde!), A Posse of Princesses, Crown Duel, The Trouble with Kings, Stranger to Command. I think those might be YA, but they are quite good.

The Miles Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold is considered to be world-class space opera. I recommend starting with Shards of Honor, then Barrayar, then reading the main books in the characters' time sequence after that, not in the order they were written. Leave the incidental short ones until the end. Engaging, great characters, little violence, no smut. I reread the entire series every few years.

Maryrose Wood's series on the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place.

Michael Connelly's Lincoln Lawyer series.

Paul Levine's Solomon and Lord series.

Try Maryjanice Davidson's Mermaid series - Love2Read

I also loved the Undead series with Betsy the vampire queen, by her but they are NOT for teenage readers. They are truly hilarious though.

Lynsay Sands A Bite to ... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks! I think I might enjoy that. Downloaded the sample to my Kindle!

Lynsay Sands' Argeneau Vampire series is pleasant. They are very polite vampires ... most of them seem to be Canadian. Although vampires, they are not undead, having a perfectly sensible medical explanation for their condition. This may be the one series acceptable to those with religious reservations about vampire books, although they might get a little too steamy in parts. You could skip over those. For that reason, definitely not YA.

Sherrilyn Kenyon's Darkhunter series. Not YA, as they do contain sex and violence. Pretty good, though. I enjoyed them up to about book 11. Started getting too dark with #12 (Acheron).

Mercedes Lackey, Tales of the 500 Kingdoms, a series complete with official fairy godmothers and some delightful dragons. Very nice, no violence, no steam. Humor. Trust me on the no violence thing.

There is a series by Leigh Bardugo that I enjoyed--sm - anon

The Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan were ridiculously fun, they made me laugh. The sequel to that series is fun as well although I found his Egyptian series less good.

One very, very good YA series was Chaos Walking. A set of 3 books, cannot remember the author but WOW!

Some adult suggestions would be Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. The first 3 books are amazing, the next 2, kind of meh, and then the ones after that very good. For some light, fun chick-lit dry Lani Diane Rich (think that is her name). Many of her works are quite fun like Time Off for Good Behavior and Ex and the Single Girl.

Isaac Asimov, the complete robot series - Shouldawentintorobitics

always will regret I never took robotics as a future career.
anyway, these books are awesome, the writing is easy to read, not scientific, and it is a great view into the future of mankind.

Loved the Vampire Academy books, also the Samantha Moon Vampire books. Another book I loved was called "When you find Me", about an adducted child.

I'm currently reading the Wheel of Time - series, on book 4 now.

[ In Reply To ..]
I think there are 12 or 13 books in the series, so if you like fantasy it will keep you busy for a while. I'm really enjoying it. I also liked the Sword of Truth series.

Another good series is the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. It's a fantasy (shocker) about the Napoleonic wars, fought with dragons! It's like a mix of Master and Commander and Eragon. :)

I loved the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Pullman - nm

Outlander - not YA, but so good

[ In Reply To ..]
It's actually a 6 or 7-book series, and the first book is my absolute all-time favorite... but don't read past #4. After that, it's absolute drivel.

Also Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins--sm - anon

who was of course author of Hunger Games. The books are not overly long, I think there are 5 in the series but they are very good.

Also, I sometimes find that I have to be in the right mood for certain books so I would try those books you could not get into again and see if they have the same tug.

Adult ADDApr 22, 2016
I was recently diagnosed with adult onset of ADD.  I've been doing a lot of research and found that this is quite common, it's not just for kids anymore. As an MT, it is important for us to concentrate on what we are doing and be able to multitask; i.e. listening, interpreting, typing, correcting, etc.  I have started to find this extremely difficult for several months now to the point where when I'm listening to some of these monotone, obnoxious dictators that my mind b ...

Meeting Young ObamaApr 06, 2012
My first meeting with young Barack Obama raised strong feelings and left me with a positive first impression.  At the time, I felt I'd persuaded a young man anticipating a Marxist-Leninist revolution to appreciate the more practical alternative of conventional politics as a channel for his socialist views.  I met Obama in December of 1980, a couple of days after Christmas, in Portola Valley -- a small town near Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA.  I was a 23 year old ...
