Possible diagnosis of feline leukemia in a young

situation? This is my daughter's young cat and blood reading was 6, should have been 30. Not sure about CBC, hemoglobin or just what as I do not have the report in front of me. Anyway, call from doctor today and stated possibly feline leukemia, wants possible bone marrow aspirate. Have any of you had similar situation, did the cat overcome or what treatments did you do? Thanks so much. ;

[ In Reply To ..]Why are they wanting to do a bone marrow aspirate? My vet uses the SNAP FIV/FeLV test and in 10-15 minutes we have the positive/negative answer. They charge $25 for the test plus the office visit. Every time a stray shows up I take them in for testing.

[ In Reply To ..]A test for Feline leukemia is a simple blood test that takes about 15 minutes. Most veterinarians will perform this test before the more invasive (and extremely painful) marrow aspiration test. This test is nothing more than a blood draw.
If positive for feline leukemia, the cat will live quite comfotably, but will grasually become more and more ill. While it has the disease, it can pass it on to other cats in the household: It is strongly recommended that any other cats in the house be tested for feline leukemia as well.
We have a feline leukemia positive cat. What we did when we found him on the streets, was take him to our vet and got a Feline leukemia test. That cost about $50 plus office fee. The vet advised that we retest in 3 months to see if the cat indeed had feline leukemia, or was a false positive.
A cat with feline leukemia can live a normal life, but you have to take some precautions. They respond differently to vaccinations, and sometimes take longer to recover from illnesses. Of all cats who have feline leukemia, 50% show symptoms. the rest may never become ill, but all can pass the disease on to other cats (through saliva, fighting, biting, and sharing litters).
A bone marrow test is very painful and also very expensive: I would look for another vet. The test your vet is recommending is not the first test that is normally recommended.
But before going straight to "Cat Cancer", go for the feline leukemia test. It is called a FIV/FeLV test. Once this very common disease is ruled out, then seek other testing.
