Menu ideas for young adult gathering.

Please toss out some ideas to me! My son's girlfriend is turning 20 this weekend, and he is inviting some friends of theirs to our house to watch movies and hang out. They're all home from college and are great young folks. I offered to make some food for them, which of course he was pleased to hear. I asked him for ideas, but he just said, "Oh, mom, you know everyone likes anything you make." Nice compliment, but I need more specifics. I want to make some food they can enjoy during their casual get together, but I'd like to offer them something a little more grown up, I suppose. Not just the usual pizza party fare. Any ideas? I thought maybe stromboli would be fun, and a bit of an upgrade to pizza. After that, I'm drawing a blank.

[ In Reply To ..]How about build your own taco (serve it buffet style) or burrito would work. If it's early in the day do a "breakfast" themed thing - being in college I don't think they take the time to really get a good breakfast most of the time - just sit out a waffle maker with some batter, do some breakfast meats to serve, etc. It would be different and it seems like that age group like that. Home made Mac and Cheese with hot dogs or lasagne. I'm on a roll. I love entertaining. Keep us posted on what you decide.

[ In Reply To ..]Pigs in a blanket (little smokies wrapped in crescent rolls) went right off the plate fast. Homemade sugar cookies and peanut butter cookies, along with brownies wrapped separately in cupcake papers went fast. For the girls, fruit bowl (I use a trifle bowl)with little plastic cups on the side. I think they're all so nervous about making an impression, they're not thinking of food. Sunny D small bottles instead of soda were very popular. Good luck with everything, tough crowd sometimes.Of course, chicken wings go fast but messy. Provide lots of napkins.

[ In Reply To ..]Maybe some bacon-wrapped crab meat, buffalo wing dip, shrimp cocktail, lebanon bologna cream cheese rollups, veggie pizza, meat and cheese tray, pizza rolls. A lot of stores carry some premade "grown-up" appetizers.
How about make some gourmet popcorn -- chocolate drizzled popcorn, etc. Keep it simple.

Use a crockpot
A package of cocktail sausages (Bryan makes a good one).
A small jar of apple jelly.
Mustard to taste.
Add the small sausages to a crockpot. Add the jar of apple jelly and a few dollops of mustard (don't put too much because it will taste bitter...just taste a bit after each dollop). Keep them hot in the crockpot. Supply decorative toothpicks. (Can also be made in a skillet or made ahead and put in a casserole dish on a warmer.) These are cheap and go over great.

One thing I have decided is to make cupcakes tomorrow morning. I'm sure her mother will have a cake for her for her party at home, but I'd like to make this lovely girl something sweet to celebrate with her friends.

2 c. shredded Monterey Jack
6 eggs
8 oz. taco sauce (hot or mild, as desired)
This is SUPER EASY and fast to throw together
Mix all cheese together. Spread 1/2 of the cheese mixture into the bottom of an ungreased 9 x 13 inch pan. Beat eggs, add the taco sauce to this, and stir again. Pour this egg mixture over the first layer of cheese. Then put the other 1/2 of the cheese on top of the egg mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 1/2 to 3/4 hour. Cool for 5 minutes and cut into square serving pieces.

[ In Reply To ..]For every holiday gathering or party where food is brought or presented, I always make "meat dip." It's sinfully delicious and quite addicting. It's always a huge hit and I end up giving everyone the recipe.
Brown 1 pound ground beef and drain.
In a crock pot, melt a 1 pound (16 ounce) block of Velveeta cheese. (You have to keep an eye on it or it will stick).
Once the cheese is melted, add the browned ground beef and one 16 ounce jar of salsa. (I always use mild Tostito's salsa, but you can use whatever brand/heat you prefer).
Stir it all together and let it heat on low, just giving it a stir every now and then.
Serve with Tostito's tortilla chips (I use the Scoops because you can get a good amount on the chip).
It's wonderful! And you can just double all the ingredients if you need a bigger batch. It also stores well and reheats great, so leftovers are not an issue.
