63% of young Republicans enrolled IN or staying ON

Posted: Aug 21, 2013

All the Obamacare provisions already in effect are proving very popular, including, as now revealed, the one allowing young adults to be covered under their parents' policies until age 26.

Link to Commonwealth Fund report just out below.

This latest discovery about young Republicans--that they both know about it and want it--is yet another piece of really bad news for the TPers. One guess where their parents tend to be on the subject, too.

Soon, like all of us, the 27-year-olds will be able to buy their own policies at premiums+discounts geared to their pocketbooks. And they obviously know that too, in spite of the right's attempts to deceive Americans about healthcare reform.

i find it strange that HHS is putting on a contest - Truthhurts

Taking money from the amounts budgeted to have this contest is unbelievable!

HOUSTON, Texas – Today, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Young Invincibles announced the Healthy Young America video contest in an effort to inform young people about health insurance coverage and new options under the Affordable Care Act.  People can submit entries and vote for their favorite videos at www.healthyyoungamerica.org.

With a prize pool worth up to $30,000, and over 100 prizes to be won, this is your opportunity to shine! Cash prizes will be awarded to the creators of the best videos in three distinct categories; so whether you’ve got a talent for short films, writing a great song, or designing an entertaining video infographic, you can be a winner! Click the links above to learn more about each of the categories and how you can participate.

Where is this money coming from? This is unbelievable! Doesn't this administration have any shame? Don't they have any pride? A government show be one that people respect...and this contest is not what I consider something I would find respectful towards the HHS. Sebelius is a joke.

If it was such a good plan, they wouldn't need prizes and gimmicks to get people to sign up. I mean really, this is embarrassing. Other countries are laughing at us.

So, if the kids are staying on their parent's policies, - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
who will be signing up for Obamacare? The target was to get all young adults in their 20s and 30s to buy health insurance.

Do you really think those 27 and up are going to buy their own after being on their parent's policies? I don't. I think they'll do without because it would be cheaper -- at least until they're married with children.

This is PART of Obamacare. Young adults already - can choose coverage through parents.

[ In Reply To ..]
Insurance companies have to cover them if they apply--until they reach their LATE 20s. Not kids, adults.

This provision is about making coverage AVAILABLE to young adults who aren't already completely self supporting. And it's available ALREADY. 63% of young Republican adults have chosen to buy this coverage. Already.

And yes, we know they will continue coverage after. For two reasons. One, they're paying now, showing they WANT health coverage, and will just buy their own policies when they're older.

Premiums+discounts are geared to income. It can be cheap, but it's only free for the poor. Those making good money pay normal premiums. Those not doing so well or heading back to grad school, say, get discounts so they can afford to continue insurance.

Second, like all other adults, once they pass the age limit for this, they will STILL be required to continue to pay into the system by law.

This is basic stuff--healthcare for EVERYONE, and no more free ride.

BTW, I suspect a lot of complainers here and on the right have been freeloaders. I like all my friends, but there are a handful who make as much or more than me but who've been freeloading for a long, long time, and, because I've always lived in heavily conservative areas, they all happen to be conservatives.

Naturally, we don't discuss politics, and I let the odd badmouthing of Obamacare pass because I know they've never given it a moment's fair appraisal, but I'll tell you what I haven't told them: Tough tiddlies. Waay past time to stop sponging off the rest of us. They're nice, hardworking or previously hardworking people and don't see themselves as spongers (naturally); and, being perfectly human, that observation would be much more likely to change how they view me than themselves.

And I wouldn't want that. Unlike the one side people show here, I know all about, and value, my friends' more admirable sides.

I have worked since age 16 at two or more jobs with only a few months off when my son was born. In fact, I worked 16 hours a day for 25 of those years.

I hate Obamacare and I'm no freeloader. I don't appreciate you calling anyone freeloaders just because they don't like Obamacare. It's insulting and in my honest opinion, your attitude is very, very snooty. Admirable friends? Maybe, maybe not. I think you should step down off your high horse and read the bill in its totality. You might learn something.

This law is a monstrosity. Even Obama and the rest of those who voted for it don't know what's happening or going to happen when this kicks in totally. Those who had a hand in writing this law have now called it a train wreck because of the many taxes and regulations added, that now makes this law over 20,000 pages long of taxes, rules and regulations. Ridiculous.

Why do you think they keep changing the rules on implementing this monster? Because they are finding more problems. They can't get it off the ground without problems, especially with companies who don't know if they'll be compliant or how to become compliant because of all the stupid regulations, but hey, leave it to the EPA, HHS, DEP, IRS, Congress, Obama, etc.to make things as confusing as possible where this could have been done much simpler.

interesting to me is that each young adult has a pair of parents. Some parents may not have been for Obamacare, but how's having it already be a big help to them going to affect their attitude? Grandparents and other loving family who would have sold their homes without a blink if a bad car accident or continued treatment for a previous condition required it? That boogie's gone for all these people.

Everyone knows that once Obamacare is implemented people won't be willing to give it up. No more than they'll give up Social Security. Well, here are people who already have it.

And there are others. Like parents of younger children. Obamacare already is in effect for coverage for children. Companies can no longer cancel or refuse to cover a 2-year-old when she's diagnosed with leukemia.

That's BIG. That's GOOD. That's a major blow to evil.

Freeloaders are people who could have purchased insurance all these years but didn't, knowing the rest of us were providing a health system that would take care of them should it be needed.

Good riddance to the burden. It's just become too heavy for the rest of us to carry. If that hurts, oh well.

A Democrat posts something, a link, a truth, opinion, or something that shines a bad light on the Republican party.

Republican posters have no input, no grounds for an argument, or maybe don't feel like thinking. So they counter with a shameless irrelevant jab, not broaching the topic, but aimed square at the poster.

Democrat comes back and challenges them or brings to light the fact they are not discussing the topic brought up.

Then Republican comes back and accuses Democrat of empty, insulting thoughts/posted, when it was actually they who offered up the waste in the first place.

Just a silly childish game by the Cons. No surprise. Someone posted a while back (I'll not state the moniker) that said they just frequent the board every now and then to stir things up for fun with no intention of discussion (an uber-Con poster btw). Maybe the same person as <<< (which may be a subliminal clue)?

So, again, an insult equals, "I have nothing, so here's a little spew of hate."

Thanks, VTMT, for bringing TRUTH to the board ;-)

[ In Reply To ..]
the enormity of what's being acccomplished and inevitable honest problems cropping up, in addition to the many groups trying to handicap, alter or destroy it, is that so surprising?

Mainly it's the enormity of the task, though. That problems would arise and that some would drag their heels while complying, slowing implementation down is just part of that. Like leaving the cake in for another 10 minutes when you find the oven is running cool.

In the meantime, so much has already happened that the general public doesn't realize. Those of us who are MTs and MEs have been performing our work according to Obamacare guidelines for a couple of years now. All the many, many thousands of hospitals, clinics and clinicians have been doing the same.

Most of us are now inputting to Obamacare-mandated EHRs (electronic health records) whether we know it or not (our employers often don't bother to tell those of us working remotely what's happening with the various clients we do work for).

Insurance and drug companies have had to dramatically change many of their practices, changing their reimbursement and pricing structures, rewriting their procedure books, and sending their legal departments back to class. All to be in compliance.

Obamacare's not just being implemented, it's implemented.

I, for one, don't appreciate the idea of the government. - Truthhurts

especially the IRS, being in control of my health records. They already screwed up a bunch of medical records and released them to the public.

How much easier do you think it's going to be for identity theft? I say it's going to be a piece of cake for those people that can hack into the data.

Look at all the bank and credit card companies AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES that have had their data compromised in the past few years and it is getting worse.

the target of the ACA was to provide affordable health care to everyone. However, since the Republican party likes to point out that they're the party of personal responsibility, I would have to assume that the 63% of young Republicans will indeed buy their own when they're no longer eligible to be on their parents' plans.

My great-nephew and 2 great-nieces benefited from being able to remain on their parents' family plan while attending college. Two of them have now graduated and have jobs and their own insurance, and the third is still in college and I am sure will also be insured when she graduates. Imagine that. The election is over. Whether we like the outcome or not, the current focus should be on what each of us can do to make the next four years as good as possible for America. I worry that high-profile celebrities run a risk of having an unwarranted impact on public opinion. Being talented in one area doesn’t translate into special insight or wisdom in another, such as politics.
