e-readers

Posted: Nov 22, 2010

Hello all - I am thinking of purchasing an e-reader, but not sure which one.  Would like info about which ones might be good or bad, and why?  Thank you.

Bought a Literati at Best Buy a few days ago. When i opened the box there was a notice that there was an update. After the update, I was happy to see I could now download documents (like Word, etc., I presume). I like it so far. It takes a minute or two to load up when you turn it and the choice of books is through Kobo which seems to have all the top sellers, etc. I have 30 days to return it to Best Buy if it's not what I want, so only time will tell. Haven't downloaded a book yet, but will soon. Once I download a book and do some serious reading, I will know more. I was undecided between Kindle, Sony and this one, went with this one for the lower price (which is not always the best way, but they all seemed pretty much to do the same thing). It was $129. Like the rest, they do have free classic books loaded on there, a dictionary, and am really happy about being able to download your own text documents.

I've been looking at them too. I am nearsighted and am on the verge - NKC

needing bifocals and I wonder if an e-reader would be better or worse as far as how small the font is and readability?

I love books though. There's just something comforting about the feel of curling up with a good book, turning pages, etc. But I also realize how much more convenient it will be when we travel not having to pack up and carry books in my carry on.

I have an Amazon Kindle which I just love. The font size is adjustable so no matter how bad my eyes feel, I can always get it to a font size that feels comfortable. Also, I think it is only Kindle and Sony e-readers that have a patent on the screen color/print color, black or dark gray print on a lighter grayish screen, but it reduces light glare and makes the screen super readable in daylight or bright light. I have an older Kindle, so I really can't tell you much about the new ones as far as their capabilities. I wish mine would download the books a bit faster, but that may have changed with the newer generations. I thought the ipads were so cool when they came out because of the internet capability and all the neat functions, but it was my husband who informed me of the tough time I would have with the glossy screen, not to mention the fingerprints that would be all over it.

Just bought a Kindle last week, last one they had at Target, hard to find. I bought the one with Wifi, not 3G. I am low-tech, no wifi at home, so I can go to McDonalds or Starbucks and download books, and can now download to my computer and then to the Kindle. Love the ability to change the font sizes as stated above. Have already read 1 novel and halfway through the 2nd. The books downloaded really fast, less than a minute. I can now read again, very happy with it so far.

The books I got I think would have been the price of a paperback. I got "The girl with the dragon tattoo" around $5 to $6. The most expensive I got was around $9. New York Times bestsellers around $10. Lots of free stuff or $1 books. I got a book on learning to speak spanish for $1. Check it out on Amazon.com.

I think it said you can store up to 350 books on the Kindle, but if you open an app on your computer, could be much more. You can transfer them to other devices (Ipad, Iphone, kindle, pc or mac). More info on Amazon. Happy reading.

E-Readers -- Who Has One?Mar 18, 2012
The thread on books reminded my how much I appreciate being able to search the entire Amazon website and order e-books right from my Kindle and have them delivered by 3G wireless in just a few seconds.  With the enormous amount of public domain books and even the free contemporary books listed on Amazon, I am able to read more and better books for less cost.   I can even read and post to MTStars from it, obtain a Sunday paper from Paris or New York, and check my email without getting o ...

Any Young Adult Fiction Readers Out There?Dec 29, 2013
I love getting engrossed in books and lately I cannot find one.  Any other young adult fiction fans have some suggestions?  I loved the V.C. Andrews older books, never could really get into the series within the last five years or so, they changed.  I absolutely LOVED the Twilight Series and read it a few times, which is against what I do, I never usually read a book more than once.  I also really enjoyed 50 Shades of Grey, the first one, but couldn't get into the second ...

CNBC Editor: Media Must Remember Readers Are Not As Ignorant OrJun 30, 2017
CNBC editor Nikhil Deogun said members of the press needed to stick to facts and remind themselves that their readers "are not as ignorant, as stupid as we think they are" during a discussion Wednesday on media in the Donald Trump era. In a panel moderated by Katie Couric at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Deogun and Wall Street Journal editor Gerard Baker, The Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg, Time editor Nancy Gibbs and USA Today editor Joanne Lipman delved into the challenges of covering Trump a ...
