Ahh, Retirement in one year

Posted: Mar 11, 2016

Okay, so I got out of MT 3 years ago (for obvious reasons), took a nice little part time job answering telephones for a mom & pop business. I plan on retiring completely in one year, and am trying to get ideas on what you plan on doing (or are doing) in retirement. Or, heck, even if you have many years ahead of you in terms of needing to work-work, I'm open to ideas. I am thinking of volunteer work. I do know that I don't want to sit around and watch movies all day. I'm thinking of maybe volunteering in a nursing home and visiting the elderly or something like that. I thought about teaching adults (who can't read who slipped through the cracks as kids) to read, but that's a huge commitment, and I really don't want to be "tied down" to something like that. I know that as a volunteer I could quit or sort of come and go as I wished, but that's not fair to the person trying to learn. I'm trying to think out of the box here, any ideas?;

Congratulations!! I am so looking forward to retiring also!

My suggestion is to check with your township/city where you live for a listing of all the volunteer opportunities. In my town, our Community Chest has a listing of all the local non-profits, volunteer organizations that are looking for volunteers!! I am sure there are many opportunities for you out there!! Enjoy your time!!

From OP - Good Idea, Thanks!

Oh, I like that idea.

I was thinking that I wish I knew how to knit or something so I could make little booties and hats for newborns or something.

I was thinking about checking our local Y, but hadn't thought about our community center. Thanks!

I know it's not much, but sometimes when - I can afford it, I make little - sm

"care packages" (travel-sized toothpaste, shampoo, skin lotion, a toothbrush, granola bars, etc.) and when I'm in the city I hand them out to random homeless people.

From OP - Thanks

Oh, nice idea.

I live in SW FL (not in a city area), and the homeless people kind of live in the brushy/woodsy areas and aren't readily visible, so I'm thinking I could make up little packages and give to the local charities to distribute as they deem necessary.

I also thought about being a "baby hugger" in a hospital. There are preemies (or otherwise in-need infants) that need as much human contact as possible, and the parents can't be there to do the task.

I'm not one of those people who needs to "be busy" all the time, but I think it would be nice to do something for human-kind without worrying about my darn paid-work schedule!

Congratulations! I guess if I had the time to volunteer, it would either be for veterans, feeding children, or pet shelters. Anything I could do to help out in those areas, I would feel blessed. Good luck, and God bless you.

I think those are all good ideas, and I hadn't thought of the veterans thing. I know I always think about them and feel sad for them. Thanks for the push in that direction.

Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) - so much to do, so little time

[ In Reply To ..]
Do a search for RSVP in your local area. They are usually sponsored through a Community Action. They can help you find opportunities such as working with kids in Head Start, or a senior companion program, respite caregiver, Habit for Humanity, etc. Our local library and area hospitals have volunteers to help people find their way around. We have a Nature Center here that is staffed with volunteers and does activities for kids or just provides info and helps with trail maintenance. The RSVP program provides a travel allowance if they ask you to drive somewhere and they keep track of your "volunteer points" and has a nice banquet every year and does awards and recognition for the volunteers. I hope to get involved in a quilters group. My aunt knits mittens, caps, and scarves to give away each Christmas. Looking forward to retirement!

Thanks - From OP

The possibilities are endless. Thanks for the RSVP.

If I lived nearer the animal shelter, I'd spend a lot of time there! nm - Semi-retired

VolunteerWork - CanBeRewarding

[ In Reply To ..]
if you are with an organization that does not take advantage of you. Did it for awhile myself until the other volunteers kept piling more work on to lessen their own load. At least when you quit a volunteer job, you will not be putting yourself in financial jeopardy but it would be nice to give back and make a difference without others making it painstaking for you.

Good Thought - From OP

[ In Reply To ..]
I hadn't thought about being taken advantage of, but I do suppose that could happen. I don't mind helping out, but if I am going to run around like chicken with my head cut off, then there's no sense in even retiring.

I am one of those people who has a hard time saying, "no," so maybe working for a big organization isn't a good idea.

When I retire, I plan on working as a volunteer or paid - genealogist

[ In Reply To ..]
There are a lot of people who cannot spend the time to make copies of records from the past couple hundred years and need someone to research and document their family tree. There is a very active history library nearby where I live and they always need help scanning and cataloging donated family records and pictures.

If you can read cursive, you can read old documents and transcribe records, too.

Talking about genealogy, just donated our family Bible - to the public library

[ In Reply To ..]
My father's family was early prominent settlers, community, roads, etc. with their name. I had a family Bible that was around 180 years old and had no one to pass down to. I really worried until I was contacted by the librarian asking would I want to donate as many people like to research my family. I was beyond thrilled. What I considered to be old, torn, needing vast repairs was one they looked at as being loved, well used. I was also able to donate a scrap book full of clippings, etc. from when my father started on and completed work on a dam in the town, working for the TVA. I am extremely pleased to know that others will be able to research and use the Bible that is given in memory of my father.

Thanks Everyone - From OP

I'm An MT Who Took Early RetirementMay 25, 2017
I have arthritis in my hands and back, progressive eye problems and high blood pressure.  After losing several close family members who were in their early 70s, I became extremely depressed working for one of the MTSOs, and I decided I should make the best of my remaining life and decided to take the early retirement to ease the pressure.    My part time IC job and retirement income is about $22,000 a year and I have a tiny nest egg stashed away for emergencies.   My plan wa ...

I am so pleased in my stock increase in my 401K over the past 2 weeks.  If this is Trump effect I wish I would have voted for him but I did not vote for president at all given the bad publicity surrounding the 2 choices I was given and I thought the other 2, Stein and whats-his-name were jokes.  Outstanding growth in my retirement fund I have not seen in years.  Hope our country does as well as the stock market with President Trump in charge.  ...

So, The Retirement Home Nurse, Obeying Company Policy, RefusesMar 04, 2013
This occurred at a retirement home, not a SNF. The nurse, who did identify herself as one on the 911 line, called 911--following retirement home rules for its employees--when a resident Lorraine Bayless collapsed, but she refused the 911 operator's repeated instruction, and then begging, to initiate CPR, saying it was against the rules, that they were instructed to call paramedics and otherwise stay out of it. The operator then begged her to grab someone who didn't actually work there ...

New Year's Traditions? Dec 26, 2013
Anyone have any specific traditions they do New Year's Eve or NY Day? Both of those days vary for us as we've gotten older. NY Eve we USED to do it up big, get all duded up, go to a banquet hall, dance, ring in the New Year with Champagne, leave after midnight. These days, we just go out for a quiet dinner with friends, or do a little thing at someone's house. Staying up until after midnight is optional for us these days, but we've been doing pretty good ringing it in. ...

How Is It Possible That A 76-year-old WomanFeb 13, 2014
Yeah, it's my mother. Maybe that says it all. She has told me she wishes she could change how she and my father parented my brothers and me when we were growing up. In the 60s and 70s nobody really thought about how to parent. They just did it, good and bad, so I'm dealing with the fallout of their choices just like every other person alive.  I think we've had the normal ups and downs, although my mother has been and continues to be a very critical, judgmental person, not jus ...
