Stocks to watch: Sunoco LP (NYSE:SUN) soared 13% after Japan-based Seven & I Holdings Co. Ltd which owns the 7-Eleven chain, said it would acquire more than 1,000 U.S. convenience stores and gas stations from Sunoco for $3.3 billion.

Constellation Brands Inc reported stronger fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday, which it attributed to gains in high-end whiskey sales. Shares jumped 7.1%.

Stock market goes up and down - old and burned out

and sometimes the pundits don't even know why. There are always theories but you can't outguess the markets.

I would need to know since when? How much do you have in there - sm

If you are talking about since 2009, your $5 investment has done extremely well.

My retirement account is older than 2009 - but has gone down for a few years

[ In Reply To ..]
Today it shot up $400 more because some of my stocks were increasing in value. I have more invested than $5 from back when MTs were paid decent wages.

Well then - sm

I guess you know why your account would be up today. Most stocks are down today, so now I am wondering if you are referring to a mutual fund or some other fund. But that is all a guessing game. What is your stock that moved so nicely? I note Caterpillar was up a bit, but that fluctuates so much, it will probably be down tomorrow. In fact, I would guess the entire market will be getting nervous about Trump's chest thumping on Syria. I also note mutual funds show their increases a day after the market moves.
I have no idea what drove the market today. - I have a variety of stocks that pay dividends
[ In Reply To ..]
I have no mutual funds, just stocks that I can trade and have passive income from dividends. The stocks that I follow and also those I own were all up today. Perhaps it has something to do with the China meeting?
Well then - sm

Movment to dividend stocks indicates nervousness in the market. Dividend stocks usually hold their value better in times of unrest. If you truly had an increase of $400 and you have dividend stocks, then my earlier guestimate of your balance was pretty much correct. Please let us know when your balance goes down as well, eh?

Cash it out NOW. We just went to war with - SYRIA. Here we go again. :(

Anyone With A 401K Or Retirement FundDec 08, 2016
I am so pleased in my stock increase in my 401K over the past 2 weeks.  If this is Trump effect I wish I would have voted for him but I did not vote for president at all given the bad publicity surrounding the 2 choices I was given and I thought the other 2, Stein and whats-his-name were jokes.  Outstanding growth in my retirement fund I have not seen in years.  Hope our country does as well as the stock market with President Trump in charge.  ...

Obama or the democratic party. This is for those who don't wish to go down to my first posting or wish to ignore it. I just want to make sure everyone is straight on this. OBAMA OR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE STOCK MARKET RALLY TODAY. There. Is that clear enough? The stock market closed at 13,292 because the ECG (European Central Bank) is buying up bonds. It has nothing to do with Obama. I can't believe you're trying to give credit to him or the part ...

Ahh, Retirement In One YearMar 11, 2016
Okay, so I got out of MT 3 years ago (for obvious reasons), took a nice little part time job answering telephones for a mom & pop business. I plan on retiring completely in one year, and am trying to get ideas on what you plan on doing (or are doing) in retirement. Or, heck, even if you have many years ahead of you in terms of needing to work-work, I'm open to ideas. I am thinking of volunteer work. I do know that I don't want to sit around and watch movies all day. I'm th ...

I'm An MT Who Took Early RetirementMay 25, 2017
I have arthritis in my hands and back, progressive eye problems and high blood pressure.  After losing several close family members who were in their early 70s, I became extremely depressed working for one of the MTSOs, and I decided I should make the best of my remaining life and decided to take the early retirement to ease the pressure.    My part time IC job and retirement income is about $22,000 a year and I have a tiny nest egg stashed away for emergencies.   My plan wa ...

I am horrified at what is happening in Wisconsin and many other states.  There has been a systemic effort to take away our rights and this is just the latest. So, The Retirement Home Nurse, Obeying Company Policy, RefusesMar 04, 2013
This occurred at a retirement home, not a SNF. The nurse, who did identify herself as one on the 911 line, called 911--following retirement home rules for its employees--when a resident Lorraine Bayless collapsed, but she refused the 911 operator's repeated instruction, and then begging, to initiate CPR, saying it was against the rules, that they were instructed to call paramedics and otherwise stay out of it. The operator then begged her to grab someone who didn't actually work there ...
