New Year's Traditions?
Posted: Dec 26, 2013
Anyone have any specific traditions they do New Year's Eve or NY Day?
Both of those days vary for us as we've gotten older. NY Eve we USED to do it up big, get all duded up, go to a banquet hall, dance, ring in the New Year with Champagne, leave after midnight. These days, we just go out for a quiet dinner with friends, or do a little thing at someone's house. Staying up until after midnight is optional for us these days, but we've been doing pretty good ringing it in.
NY Day is also up for grabs here. This year, I'm doing a big turkey dinner with all the trimmings, with lots of friends. Will likely eat outdoors--I live in SW Florida, and the weather can turn for a night or 2 in Dec/Jan, so we'll keep our fingers crossed.
Anyone else care to share?;
Im thinking about making a nice dinner - SM

enough for both New Years Eve and New Years day so I can just kick back.
My hubby wants to take me out somewhere for New Year's Eve, but honestly I have turned in to such a homebody & introvert that I prefer to rent a couple movies and stay in. I'm fine with ringing in the New Year watching the T.V. countdown's. I'm 40, but still tune into MTV or BET at around 10:30 or 11 o'clock and watch the countdown at midnight while enjoying a couple glasses of wine.
I use to do it big, get all dressed up and go to parties or out to a nice lounge but outgrew that in my mid 30s.
I am thinking of making ribs or rib tips, spaghetti with Italian sausage, green peppers, onions and mushrooms with a side of deviled eggs, fresh green beans and garlic bread. For dessert I am going to either make peach cobbler or homemade banana pudding with vanilla wafers baked in the oven. And of course we will pick up a couple bottles of white wine.
Nice - OP

I meant to mention, I'm pushing 60 and my husband is 62. We stopped the banquet, getting duded up, dancing thing probably in our late 20's, early 30's. We have gradually settled into the quieter stuff. I so enjoy just sitting around and hanging with hubby (and he me), that it's not a big deal to "do nothing" but cook up some doo-dads, pop open some wine, and relax.
I'm doing a big NY Day this year because a friend of ours had a bad cancer scare, and all is now well, so we want to have a Happy New Year with a food and friend celebration!
Sounds like a lot of fun. No better way to celebrate - than with a big turkey dinner.

I'll probably make black-eyed peas and rice and collard greens - black-eyed peas are supposed to be good luck on New Year's Day.
I have to work at 9 am on New Year's Day - probably New Year's Eve I will do something completely boring, yet satisfying to me - I'm trying to get all my craft supplies organized, so I can start selling stuff on eBay - so I'll probably be organizing stuff, maybe even get a listing up on eBay with a photo, to reward myself.
Actually New Year's Eve I'd like to have a fish dinner from Elias Brothers and then diet orange soda which I only very infrequently get. Some punch in a punch bowl might be nice too. Or else fattening eggnog.
Collard greens and black-eyed peas sound yummy! - and traditionally black-eyed peas are

suppose to be eaten on New Years for good luck.
clear the dining table and work a new puzzle - setting a tradition for my kids
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm inviting other children the same age as my child over to stay up to midnight putting together new jigsaw puzzles of varying difficulty. There are more kids in our neighborhood this year than last year. None of the parents partied last year or have told me about having plans like that this year, and I think it sets a healthy example for the kids to see alternatives to being wild and crazy for one evening. We will have popcorn and treats and watch the ball drop on TV. Everyone will be escorted home about 12:30.
I love this idea - My mom was a big puzzle fan

I was never that much of a puzzle fan but my sister was and I have great memories of watching my sis and Mom put a puzzle together even as adults. They'd get silly and laugh and just have a good time. It's a fond memory now that Mom is gone.
I love your idea of inviting the neighborhood kids to joint in. That's a great tradition to start.
We usually stay home, but I make - a vegetarian

hoppin' John for good luck. We are going to a ski resort this year, just to take the kids snow tubing and watch the fireworks (and freeze our bottoms off!)
It's a dish made from black-eyed peas, - thought to bring

good luck if you eat it. I put lots of veggies in mine. I think the normal kind is made with a ham hock or something. I made it one year for vegetarian friends of mine and just stuck with it. I should try ham hock though--maybe that's why it hasn't brought me good luck yet:-)
It is supposed to be hog jowls. - Very tasty!

It is supposed to be hog jowls. They come as small slabs of smoked hog jowl bacon. Look for meaty ones.
It isn't icky at all. Just tastes like smoked pork. Not like hickory-smoked bacon, but like smoked pork.
I think hoppin john with no meat would come with no luck or possibly even negative luck. Ham would give it 25% luck, and smoked hocks perhaps 50% luck. To get the full benefit, you need the real thing. (Extra points if it is wild boar!)
The price on hog jowls has been outrageous the last few years, too. Sigh.
Hoppin John for good luck...for every bean you eat - L&L

you will have a day of good luck.
I tried to eat 365 of them one year and puked them all up. Not a good year.
Sleep and work - not at the same time though LOL

I usually work. Can't remember the last time I had a New Years Day off unless there was no work in the system.
Usually its a snack day for us. I either make guacamole or chile dip, cookies. Anything that tastes good to us at the moment.
We don't have any traditions. Last year I doze off around 10pm woke up at 2 went to bed. Never really got into the party lifestyle. I just like watching movies, snacking and playing with my cats.

St Pat's Day TraditionsMar 17, 2014We boil up a corned beef, then throw it on the grill to crisp it up nice. (We live in SW FL, so weather permits every year).
From there, we slice it up and put Thousand Island dressing (or Russian) on rye bread, put on the corned beef, a slice or 2 of Swiss cheese, then top that with cole slaw, and chow down. Yummy. Of course, a beer goes well with that if you are so inclined.
We make our own rye bread, so all the better. We usually invite a couple of neighbors over, but not always.

Halloween Traditions/my Neighbor Told Me I'm Going ToOct 16, 2009This is kind of a double post so I didn't take up board space!
FIRST: I have a new neighbor and we had introduced herself when she moved in and we were all friendly. I recently decorated for H-ween. Nothing too much just a big lighted up pumpkin, an inflatable ghost, and a couple of those wind socks on the porch. Anyway yesterday her and a couple of her church girlfriends came over and knocked on my door. I answered all polite and then she told me that H ...

New Year's EveJan 01, 2011Another year has come and gone. We ended up going to the movies to see the Little Fockers. It was pretty funny. We went to the grocery store beforehand to pick up some snacks for today and then grabbed dinner at a fast food place the kids picked.
Overall, it was a pretty good evening. I went to bed about 11:30 (I tried but could not stay awake), but the kids stayed up till a little after 12 with DH. After that, they went off to bed.

It's A New Year And I Just Want To Cry...Jan 01, 2015I'm the parent of a toddler, no other kids. I'm 42 and she just turned 3. How Is It Possible That A 76-year-old WomanFeb 13, 2014Yeah, it's my mother. Maybe that says it all. She has told me she wishes she could change how she and my father parented my brothers and me when we were growing up. In the 60s and 70s nobody really thought about how to parent. They just did it, good and bad, so I'm dealing with the fallout of their choices just like every other person alive. I think we've had the normal ups and downs, although my mother has been and continues to be a very critical, judgmental person, not jus ...

Ahh, Retirement In One YearMar 11, 2016Okay, so I got out of MT 3 years ago (for obvious reasons), took a nice little part time job answering telephones for a mom & pop business. I plan on retiring completely in one year, and am trying to get ideas on what you plan on doing (or are doing) in retirement. Or, heck, even if you have many years ahead of you in terms of needing to work-work, I'm open to ideas.
I am thinking of volunteer work. I do know that I don't want to sit around and watch movies all day.
