Co-ed sleepover for 12-year-olds? Really? sm

Posted: Jan 22, 2010

My 12 year old son just asked me if he could sleep over at a friend's house tonight at a boy's house, with 4 other kids.  I asked him who the kids were.... three of them (including my son) would be boys, and two girls!  I said no.  He is very upset and says it is no big deal.  Would you have let your child go?

Absolutely not!!!!! My daughter is 12 and you couldn't pay to convince me that it is an okay thing to do.

At our house... - we have a 9 year old

Girls are welcome to come eat pizza and watch a movie. When movie is over, parents are to pick them back up and the boys spend the night.

good idea. - Emily

I agree with this. Here i am commenting on something i really cant because I am not a parent, but I will tell you what, my children will not be having co-ed sleepovers... at any age! im glad there are still good parents out there!!! :)

No co-ed sleepovers - kris

Absolutely never do co-ed sleepovers! My friend's son went to one where a sister and brother both had friends over and it ended up with her son being questioned by the police for possible sexual abuse, which was consentual with this young girl. Talk to the parent having this sleepover!!

My son came home and said the party had been canceled for some mysterious reason. Maybe parents called? BTW, I had offered my son the option of going and picking him up at midnight and he did not want to go at all if he couldn't spend the night. I had decided not to let him go, but was glad to hear it was canceled. Hope that doesn't come up again!

Whether you actually know or hear about it or not, this situation will present to him again, and another time he might not tell you there will be girls there.  Don't think ... oh that won't happen with my kid, he doesn't lie.  Teenagers find ways around parents' rules, and a classic is "The Omission".

Just keep that in mind.  This co-ed sleepover trend is all over the place and does not look like it is going away anytime soon.  I first heard about it when my 14 y/o niece wanted to do it - that was 12 years ago.

For the record:  I am a no-way-no-how on this also.

Would this also disqualify households where opposite sex siblings live? - Just curious. sm

Especially ones close in age? Things are not always black and white. At age 12, the concept of "fair" in a parent is paramount. I would not miss too many chances with a son or daughter to demonstrate that desirable trait. Seeing a parent as fair translates into seeing a parent as someone they can trust a little further down the line when the stakes become much higher. If parents lead by example and offspring follow, then the question arises over instilling snap as opposed to deliberative and well considered judgmentalism into their personality and character.

just one word - whadyousay? - is it CVA season?

I didn't understand that either. nm - Am I dense?

2-year-old Kentucky Girl Accidentally Killed By Her 5-year-old Brother May 01, 2013
"A 2-year-old Kentucky girl was accidentally killed by her 5-year-old brother who fired a rifle he had been given as a gift, officials said Wednesday." Parents can be arrested for not reporting a missing child. It's not even legal to let your child drive a car without a permit. Yet, this sad, sad story is unfortunately way too common. We MUST start holding adults accountable for guns in the home. ...

New Year's EveJan 01, 2011
Another year has come and gone.  We ended up going to the movies to see the Little Fockers.  It was pretty funny.  We went to the grocery store beforehand to pick up some snacks for today and then grabbed dinner at a fast food place the kids picked. Overall, it was a pretty good evening.  I went to bed about 11:30 (I tried but could not stay awake), but the kids stayed up till a little after 12 with DH.  After that, they went off to bed.  I'm actually looking ...

It's A New Year And I Just Want To Cry...Jan 01, 2015
I'm the parent of a toddler, no other kids.  I'm 42 and she just turned 3.  My husband is at home too, but he is disabled from physical issues as well as mental ones.  I was a stay-at-home transcriptionist way before I became a mother and I am overwhelmed with it all.  My husband is there for us maybe 50% of the time, which just isn't cutting it.  He is my only source of support, as we have no family, no friends (thank you isolating career move), and we ju ...

I have a 12 year old son in the 7th grade.  Yesterday he cried and almost missed his school bus because he was not happy with his hair and said there was no possible way he could go to school with his hair like that.  It looked the same as it always does.  I had to make him leave and go get on the bus and I felt awful having him leave upset.  This morning, it is about 40 degrees outside here, and he did not want to wear a jacket of any sort.  He has about 10 hoodies tha ...

New Year's Traditions? Dec 26, 2013
Anyone have any specific traditions they do New Year's Eve or NY Day? Both of those days vary for us as we've gotten older. NY Eve we USED to do it up big, get all duded up, go to a banquet hall, dance, ring in the New Year with Champagne, leave after midnight. These days, we just go out for a quiet dinner with friends, or do a little thing at someone's house. Staying up until after midnight is optional for us these days, but we've been doing pretty good ringing it in. ...

How Is It Possible That A 76-year-old WomanFeb 13, 2014
Yeah, it's my mother. Maybe that says it all. She has told me she wishes she could change how she and my father parented my brothers and me when we were growing up. In the 60s and 70s nobody really thought about how to parent. They just did it, good and bad, so I'm dealing with the fallout of their choices just like every other person alive.  I think we've had the normal ups and downs, although my mother has been and continues to be a very critical, judgmental person, not jus ...

Ahh, Retirement In One YearMar 11, 2016

I plan on retiring completely in one year, and am trying to get ideas on what you plan on doing (or are doing) in retirement. Or, heck, even if you have many years ahead of you in terms of needing to work-work, I'm open to ideas. I am thinking of volunteer work. I do know that I don't want to sit around and watch movies all day. I'm th ...
