sick of CORPORATE EVERYTHING...

now a corporate president, either repub or democ?  Ayn Rand would be very happy...

I once had an Indian doctor (whom I admired very much) tell me people from other countries before coming here read "Atlas Shrugged" and Ayn Rand's books.  This is their view of our country.

I read the book and was sickened at the ruthlessness and worship of money as a god...  kind of like, well, now.

;

Geesh! Ayn Rand never promoted worship of money etc. - sm

First, to your Indian friend, I would say - "And yet you still come here by the millions. How very, very odd!"

As for Rand, if anything she was ANTI-corporate. Individual self-interest lies at the core of her writing.

Here's what Rand herself said: "My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute."

Objectivism is the philosophy of rational individualism as founded by Ayn Rand.

Some have said that she promoted selfishness, but it might better be said that she promoted the idea that each individual is responsible to himself to discover and do what makes him happy, in whatever form that might be.

What is true about Rand is that she advocates no particular moral framework and takes no ethical position with respect to what form someone's idea of "happiness" might take.

So, if giving to others unselfishly makes you happy, by all means do it (and, oddly, do it selfishly, because it makes you happy!).

But, by the same token, if taking from others makes you happy, you should do that.

Self-interest is certainly important. Each of us should strive to be all that we can be, and sometimes that might force us to make decisions that are - or at least appear to be - selfish.

But here are the unanswered questions (or, rather, questions that each individual must answer):
1. What is happiness?
2. If I am to pursue my own happiness, does that mean that I am to elevate myself to the highest throne in my order of priorities, or is that a way to ensure that I will never be happy?
3. Does my happiness find its highest expression by ignoring, or by recognizing, the interests of other people with whom I share this planet?

Rand answers none of these questions.

The self as the frame of reference with respect to questions of ethical behavior is something different from pursuing one's highest calling. It is a sad and impoverished philosophy, in my opinion.

I like your post... - ExCorp

but to clarify, it was more of a get to know and understand how things work here in order to be competitive, I think that was the purpose of trying to understand 'capitalism' and as this was back in the mid 90s - I think it worked.

It was interesting to me that it was almost like 'required' reading before coming here, at least for this person and his circle who came here from India and other various countries to start businesses. Again, it seems to have worked for them quite well.

If we all only think of ourselves and our own happiness (I think of criminals, rapists, terrorists, etc) I would think we would have chaos and probably become extinct as a race. If everyone is in the same mindset and on the same page, then sure, it would make some sense.

I remember Ari Onasis when asked about the hunting and killing of whales to their extinction replied something like basically if they were not smart enough to survive, then it was their problem...because he was profiting and nothing else mattered. The way Clinton and Trump both live because seemingly neither cares about anything but their own pockets, as long as you are making money then anything goes. It is a scary place to be because it could lead to so much chaos.

It would seem they both want us to become our enemies, and we will be no different and will no longer be able to be anything else but terrorists ourselves.

Anyone implying that Rand describes "how things work" in the US - is silly beyond description.

Rand herself would have said that her greatest frustration in life was that individual objectivism was NOT widely practiced, as she thought it should be. This, in fact, was the primary impetus for writing her books. She was preaching her philosophy in her books, but despite their wide readership her philosophy has never gained traction.

I can't imagine why anyone would hold out Rand as the spokesperson for the American system of capitalism, and frankly it's a bit ludicrous to picture thousands of prospective immigrants all reading Rand as requisite preparation for coming to the US.

You should have questioned this rather silly notion on its face.

Agreed. Rand used too many words to describe a simple concept, - one should pursue ones dreams (which

some people confuse with selfishness) as an individual. People also confuse confidence with arrogance.

She was also an atheist and full of contradictions, but she has some valid points.

I've noticed people twisting the point she was trying to make lately on the left in order to slap down capitalism.

This is why our founders said without a moral compass - any system will become corrupt.

They knew how selfish human nature is and built a system of checks and balances.

No More Corporate Welfare!Apr 08, 2011
I know it's not realistic to think that we could ever get to the point where people would pay the taxes they are supposed to pay, but that would solve our budget problems and nobody would go hungry. The middle class would have more money to spend and we would buy things from the big companies who make them. We would all save money because we would be driving on better roads, not tearing our cars apart, children will be getting a better education and not have to move in with their parents wh ...

I am about to leave the MT world (please, Lord, soon--I cannot stand seeing NJA all day, and my budget is sunk) and am applying for a job with some law firms. One of them is a really corporate kind of thing. I have always been more of a casual gal, but casual would not cut it with this firm. I am not fat, not skinny, just average build, average looks. Not a show-stopper, not ugly, either. Just an average woman you wouldn't look at twice. If you needed to present a good corporate imag ...

Time For A Corporate SpringMay 26, 2012
A common complaint in today’s world is one of disconnection. Our industrialized world has resulted in less contact with community — we don’t know our neighbors or who grows our food. In the same way that we’ve lost touch with a deeper sense of belonging and place, many of us have become disconnected from the soul of our work. The corporation-worker structure today is a master-servant relationship. We’re slaves to the company, working longer hours for less wage ...

DNC Finally Reveals It's List Of Corporate InfluenceSep 28, 2016
Even the New Republic called the Democratic National Convention 'one big corporate bribe,’ as Trump-phobic donors threw in big money. Corporate interests and influences have gained a great deal of ground in the Democratic Party under Hillary Clinton’s candidacy. The dec ...
