Help with sick dog

Posted: Mar 18, 2010

Kelsey, my 12-1/2-year-old miniature Schnauzer, has had arthritis for a few years. She was really in a lot of pain last fall and the vet suggested baby aspirin. I have been giving her baby aspirin and she was like a puppy again...until this past weekend. Just all of the sudden, she is back to feeling miserable. When she stands, her hind legs and front left leg shake. She did let me take her for a walk just around half of our block today but since then has been in bed and not getting up at all. She isn't eating or drinking and just miserable. She isn't even lifting her head up off her pillow. I just tried to pick her up and she cried horribly. She was lying in her bed beside my chair, but after I picked her up she went into her kennel which is her "safe place." I am taking her as soon as possible in the morning to our vet, but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions until then.

her BP or diabetes, the "shaking" is suspicious.

Kelsey has a ruptured disk in her neck and some pretty severe nerve impingement. She was shaking from the pain. The vet gave her an injection for pain and steroids and sent her home on oral steroids and a muscle relaxer. She's still not sleeping but has calmed down some. She did eat a little, but still not drinking. We go back next Thursday. She said there is a 50/50 chance that the steroids will work. If not, she'll need surgery that starts at $2000. Please send some happy thoughts our way that the steroids work.

The vet said it might be an aneurysm or something, but was not sure. Her back was so bad that she would stand for hours until she was shaking and then lay down for hours and then get up. She could not squat to use the restroom, which caused some pretty nasty accidents, and would not eat. They told me that if the steroids did not work, she would need to go to a neurologist. The steroids made her feel much better with some minor setbacks here and there when the steroids made her feel better than she really was. I was prepared to give her steroids until they killed her (as she is a very old dog, as well--at the time, she was 12). Now, she is mostly better (2 years later). I can tell that her back is not 100% and probably never will be, but she gets around well enough to catch squirrels and other small creatures. The funny thing was that when they did the x-rays, they said that she had no arthritis and that if they were looking at the x-rays alone, they would have thought she was a 2-year-old dog. Anyway, I hope everything works out as well for you as it did for us because we really could not afford to take an old dog to the doggy neurologist, but I have had her since I was 18, so I don't know what we would have done. :)

Thanks Kendra-sm - ColtFan

I'm glad your puppy is doing well. Kelsey is doing exactly the same as your dog did. She stands forever and then lies downfor a short time. Hopefully, Kelsey will get better soon. She is so pitiful. I did ask the vet about the surgery on a 12-year-old, and she said she didn't know if she would even make it through surgery. I sure hope this works out for the best.

It's so sad when our animals are sick, makes you feel helpless because they can't tell you what they need. Wishing you brighter days ahead and many more happy years with your pup.

I felt so bad for her in the middle of the night last night. I laid down beside her crate and tried to calm her down and she looked at me and you could tell she was pleading for me to help her. I just felt terrible that I couldn't help her. We don't have an all night vet in our area, but I took her in as soon as they opened. I keep telling my husband no more pets after Kelsey is gone. They live such a short time and we get so attached to them. Thanks again!
Could it maybe be time to end her suffering? :( - nmsg

sick dog - Samoyed

[ In Reply To ..]
I have a 12-year-old Samoyed...about 2 years ago she experienced something similar. Out of no where she could barely stand or balance on her back legs....could not stand up enough to potty...very sad to see....took her to vet and got xrays...said her spine I believe looked like either a degenerative thing going on...or possibly since she always slips on slippery floors that she may have jammed I think her vertebra...Anyway the vet gave her a steroid shot...plus sent her home on prednisone and to be like a person on bed rest, confined to just an area to lay down and not move around much for nearly a month or so I believe. She did actually come out of it okay....but you can tell she is not sturdy like she used to be and occasionally has a slight bit of wobbliness off and on...I'm just a lot more careful of what she does...she is older...and just like a person...our bones/joints start to fail. At first thought it was hip dysplasia, but her hips were okay..as this breed is known for that. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE MY Sydney dog...and I cried for that entire weekend before I got her to the bed...thinking it was the end....but happily she is still here today and does pretty good, turned 12 on the 16th. One bad side effect from the prednisone/steroid shot is it made her have to potty all the time....could not make it through the night...so she had to stay in her kennel. I think it makes them very thirsty or something.

Wish you the best with your dog!!!

I Have Been So SickOct 27, 2009
Is this just the flu?  Fever, unbreakable, at a brain-boiling 101 for 48 hours.  I took toxic amounts of alternating Tylenol and Advil, with tons of GatorAde and ice water, but could not break it.  All day Saturday and Sunday, just burning up.  I was seriously tempted to start making funeral arrangements.  And cough, so bad that now my rib muscles are ripped, hurts every time I cough or sneeze.  Body aches, everything hurts, head, shoulders, knees, elbows, back, hip ...

The attacks on president Obama are not something new from the republican party. President Clinton was subjected to the same rabid persecution from Whitewater to Monica Lewinsky, anything to dismantle his presidency.  Thankfully he prevailed and is still respected for his accomplishments and his statemenship.  In the case of Clinton vs Obama, republicans eventually caught Clinton in a compromising position with Monica thus revealing his weak points, sex and women.  In the case of p ...

I have been reading all the bashing on here for Obama, Democrats, Republicans, Bush, etc.  Frankly it is getting ridiculous.   You see, reading these posts makes me think of what Congress does.  Everybody is bickering and nobody is doing anything.  The comparison is not meant to put anyone in particular down, it is just getting old, just like our government (including both parties).  Frankly, I don't believe either party runs this country anymore.  I beli ...

Sick Mother-In-LawFeb 24, 2010
I am submitting a prayer request for my sick mother-in-law. She has only had one kidney for many years now. Recently, she was taken to the hospital to have a large kidney stone removed. (It required surger.) Her kidney functionality went from 30%to 10% in one week. I believe she will have to start immediate dialysis. I am worried and sad. I am praying that her functionality will come back. The doctors were hoping for that. She is the grandmother of my daughters, and I do not want anything to go ...

Sick And PetrifiedMar 26, 2010
Okay, so I've got a tumor in my parotid gland that needs to be excised.  Radiologist leaned towards benign; surgeon leaned toward malignant, as the tumor has tripled in size over 6 months and now there is another nodule in my neck area.  My CEA is also elevated into the 4s; not a huge elevation, but elevated nonetheless.  My H&H are also concentrated.  Neither of these are reassuring. My surgeon did say an elevated CEA is usually more associated with colon cancer t ...

Aren't they supposed to be working for us not against us?  Why does each side think it's okay to take the American people hostage as long as it furthers thier agenda?  It's not just the tax cuts that will expire, but it also puts into motion the defense cuts that were never supposed to happen, which could put more than 1 million people out of work.  I think every single one of them should forfeit thier paycheck until they come up with a plan that helps everyone, not ...

Excuse me, but this just totally gets my girdle in a pinch.,, My upstairs neighbor is on welfare... but does not need to be and totally abuses this. Her parents now pay the rent and other expenses. She had the baby 8 MONTHS AGO. She is still collecting welfare. ...

Feeling Guilty About Sick HusbandFeb 28, 2011
My husband had terrible lower back pain and went to the doctor last week and was told he most likely had sciatica.
