No More Corporate Welfare!

Posted: Apr 8, 2011

I know it's not realistic to think that we could ever get to the point where people would pay the taxes they are supposed to pay, but that would solve our budget problems and nobody would go hungry. The middle class would have more money to spend and we would buy things from the big companies who make them. We would all save money because we would be driving on better roads, not tearing our cars apart, children will be getting a better education and not have to move in with their parents when they're grown, and older people can afford not to get kicked out of their nursing homes. People won't lose their homes when they get seriously ill. That's just a start of the good things that could happen if those loop holes were plugged.

;

But how many of us little guys can afford the PR messages these guys buy? - We are losing that battle

[ In Reply To ..]
They have the money to promote any idea they want to promote, and if they say it enough times, the general public will believe it. At least many will. Some of us have realized that they aren't using their bail-out and tax rebate monies so they can hire more people. That's the biggest lie of all.

It wouldn't solve the budget problem - - Billie

[ In Reply To ..]
it would alleviate but we have expenses other than spending, such as interest on borrowed money for the wars, payments to veterans, wounded soldiers, and now the dollar is declining quickly. Our ratings agencies still haven't been held accountable for giving AAA ratings for bundled garbage loans that were sold around the world. Other countries do not want to invest in US now because our money has not real value. There is nothing sound about QE. The currency is likely going to fail and many people in the US will be doing without.

...not to mention we are in hock to China. - So you not agree that

[ In Reply To ..]
spending cuts are necessary now? We are to the point that we must?

Yes - China paid for two wars, not sure how - Libya is being paid for.

[ In Reply To ..]
We're also still paying for a multi-trillion dollar Medicare prescription plan which will cost more if the "donut hole" indeed closes. The budget cuts are a drop in the bucket. It is just interesting and disheartening to see how it is all such a political drama instead of a true effort to save money.

Getting the wealthy/corporations to pay their fair share is a start - At least it would be a start in the right directio

[ In Reply To ..]
We can't fix everything instantly, but at least getting some fairness in having all of us who have money, not just the middle class, pay equally, that will be a good start. Then we can go from there.

Talk about beating a dead horse - sm

I don't believe you will find anyone on this board who disagrees with making corporations and the wealthy paying their fair. However, their fair share is not by raising their taxes. There are still loopholes they can use to get out of paying a lot of money while the rest of us will continue to get screwed.

Get rid of the loopholes!!!

now a corporate president, either repub or democ?  Ayn Rand would be very happy... I once had an Indian doctor (whom I admired very much) tell me people from other countries before coming here read "Atlas Shrugged" and Ayn Rand's books.  This is their view of our country.   I read the book and was sickened at the ruthlessness and worship of money as a god...  kind of like, well, now.   ...

Time For A Corporate SpringMay 26, 2012
A common complaint in today’s world is one of disconnection. Our industrialized world has resulted in less contact with community — we don’t know our neighbors or who grows our food. In the same way that we’ve lost touch with a deeper sense of belonging and place, many of us have become disconnected from the soul of our work. The corporation-worker structure today is a master-servant relationship. We’re slaves to the company, working longer hours for less wage ...

DNC Finally Reveals It's List Of Corporate InfluenceSep 28, 2016
Even the New Republic called the Democratic National Convention 'one big corporate bribe,’ as Trump-phobic donors threw in big money. Corporate interests and influences have gained a great deal of ground in the Democratic Party under Hillary Clinton’s candidacy. For example, Clinton’s 2008 campaign co-chair, former Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz rescinded a DNC ban enacted by Barack Obama in 2008 on donations from lobbyists and SuperPACS. The dec ...

Big Oil WelfareMay 18, 2011
The Senate blocked a bill Tuesday that would repeal about $2 billion a year in tax breaks for the five biggest oil companies.  First of all, this bill should have been initiated in the Republican-controlled House as it is a "money bill."  Second, I do not fault the three Democrat senators who voted against this bill.  A senator's job is to represent the people of his state, and that is what they are doing.  However, I do fault  MOST of the Republicans for voting ag ...

Contrary To GOP Claims, U.S. Has Second Lowest Corporate Taxes In The Developed WorldJul 06, 2011
During negotiations regarding raising the nation’s debt limit, congressional Republicans have defended tax loopholes for corporations, claiming that America has a high corporate tax rate that is stifling economic growth and job creation. But the Center for Tax Justice (CTJ) has crunched the most recent data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Office of Management and Budget, and the Census Bureau, and finds that “the U.S. is already ...

Update On Welfare FraudOct 12, 2011
Well, after a lot of thought and discussion, we turned our information over to the appropriate authority.  It came down to family.  Our family.  What we can live with knowing and what we can't.  What kind of an example we want to set for our children.  While we have no plans to disclose this to our children now, maybe some day when they're older, we will use it to teach them a lesson about actions and consequences.  It also made us realize that maybe ...
