Corporate Accountability International or "When do groups go too far?"

Posted: May 21, 2010

This isn't quite political but I know I can get answers here.  Their slogan is "strengthening democracy by limiting corporate interference in national and international policy-making so that ordinary people can hold corporations accountable for their actions......'

I just heard this on TV and decided to look them up. They want to retire Ronald McDonald because he "promotes unhealthy kids."  She showed up at the shareholder meeting and spoke against Ronald McDonald.

When do groups take things too far? According to her, fast food restaurants are responsible for our children being unhealthy; i.e., diabetic, obese, etc., etc.

I, for one, don't believe that. You didn't see a lot of diabetic, obese, otherwise unhealthy kids growing up 10-20 years ago. McD's has been around a long time with RD.  Kids used to exercise by playing outside, riding bikes, playing games. No...It is NO EXERCISE (i.e., too busy with playstations, computers, TV,  parents and kids having too many activities to eat balanced meals, etc.

She states there is no conclusive evidence that the kids are less active. She also states it's not because the parents are allowing them to eat too much fast food. Another statement she made was that half the parents with kids under 18 would like to see the shenangans put to rest. Huh?

She doesn't put the blame where it belongs. On the kids and parents themselves, AND may I add, on schools who don't make sure there is physical education in our schools and also feed mostly junk food nowadays. It used to be a treat to get pizza on a Friday at my school even though it was horrible. LOL Now they get it every week, along with hot dogs, burgers, chicken nuggets, french fries, and whatever else kids like to eat, plus the soda machines and snack machines in the schools.

How is this strengthening democracy??? I absolutely think this is taking things too far. What do you think? Do you think it's going to far or do you think she's right?

Her full statement is here (and watch out for the top.. It reads "if you want to read more click here" and that quick it will change to 'Sign the card").

It's not Ronald, it's lazy parenting and I can't speak for everyone, but I admit that I've fallen into that category before. You've worked all day and just don't feel like cooking and McDonald's is fast and easy. The trick with McDonald's, just like everything else, is moderation. As a kid, we would go out to eat at Burger Chef (for those of you old enough to remember Burger Chef - lol) MAYBE once a month, not every week.

As far as kids being more active, I definitly think that with video games, etc kids are a lot less active than 10 or 20 years ago. And I'm not advocating getting rid of video games (don't want CAI going after Mario!) Again, though, that stuff has to be in moderation.

My brother and I would spend all day outside playing and hated when mom called us in when the sun went down. My son has gym class once a week for half an hour. The teacher's idea of discipline when some students act up is to have the entire class sit while he lectures them on behaving, so out of that half an hour, there's maybe 10 to 15 minutes of actual physical movement. I try to make sure that the kids get out and play, but again, sometimes it's easier to let them spend that extra half an hour playing the Wii or watching TV - I admit, I've been there!

So, you get rid of Ronald - does anyone really believe that's going to make a difference in how many people eat at McDonald's every day? And the bigger issue is how far into our personal lives are these groups going to keep getting? When do we stop blaming everyone else for our problems and where does the personal accountability start? I think that's where the real problem is.

I totally agree with what you're saying. - Backwards Typist

I think it is okay to go to a fast food restaurant once in a while. It would be a treat for the kids. No problem there.

These type of groups are getting absolutely no support from me. The government has no right, either, to tell us what to eat. It's fine to point out "bad" versus "good" food, but the choice should still be ours. To outlaw "bad" foods, as in the case of deep frying in NY(?memory again), that's out of hand.

All the fast food restaurants have their menus on line with nutrition information, calories, fats, etc.

Can you imagine a world without anything to eat except green food? Quite boring, I would think. LOL

How about going back to the time when food was only sold locally how excited everyone was when the peaches, watermelons, tomatoes, etc. were harvested? I do wash any veggie from another country until it's almost bruised and DO NOT buy anything grown/fished from China, but I certainly don't want to go back to the days of only having fresh fruit and veggies in the summer.

not everything is green and "boring" Whether it's right or wrong, the government will intervene with our food choices when our food choices affect their spending habits and they have to start spending more on disease care because the citizens don't care to "police" themselves and stay away from grease and fat. Here's what I find "boring"....Confined to a wheelchair, hooked up to oxygen, taking insulin shots daily and spending 20 minutes swallowing 30 different meds to keep me alive. But hey, the fun and not so boring part of my day is when my caretaker brings in my Big Mac and I can kick back and watch Oprah and then take another nap. Fun times... ;)
So after getting rid of McDonald's... - Zville MT

It will be okay for the government to tell you that you can't grill burgers in your own backyard because of the grease and fat, you can't eat bacon and eggs for breakfast because of the cholesterol, you can't have chocholate because of the calories, and the Pilsbury Dough Boy and the Keebler Elves will be on the Most Wanted List.

You're absolutely right that the government will start to intervene in our lives, whether we can "police" ourselves or not. They will own us because they will be paying for our health care. And BTW, don't count on getting those 30 meds to help keep you alive, much less getting a caretaker - that will not be cost effective for the government to pay for someone who couldn't stay away from the grease and fat!
You're talking to the wrong person...sm - BDK

I could care less if the government tries to tell me I can't do the things I ALREADY don't do because I value my health. No hamburgers for me. No bacon and eggs for me. No cookies, no junk....I don't need it, don't want it. And the meds....I don't take any and never will. They are just as toxic as the junk food. As I said, talk to somebody who thinks they can't live without these things. I am living without them by choice and I'm all the more healthier because of it. ;)
Just to quote you... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
"I am living without them by choice." You made that decision and that is great. However, how it is right to take away someone else's choices? So we can choose to abort a baby because we have the right to choose but we can't decide for ourselves whether we can have Taco Bell or not. Hmmm.

You can encourage people to eat healthier but you can't force them. Our very own president smokes cigarettes. The first lady has a rather large posterior side. We have models who look anorexic and are unhealthy...you gonna force them to eat?

We have some who want to legalize marijuana. Now how many people who smoke pot get the munchies and snack on carrot sticks? LOL.
Some "choices" just happen...sm - BDK
[ In Reply To ..]
to cost other taxpayers a lot of money. I really have no desire to pay for the addictions of others that put a burden on health care for all of us. I said it before....I'll say it again...If the government wants to put a ban on unhealthy habits, I could care less. Cigarettes, bacon, cheese, alcohol, drugs, ice cream, candy bars, chips, soda and abortion...ban them all. We'll all be better off. ;)

It is so much easier to say.... - Trigger Happy

I'm fat and it is McDonald's fault even though I made the choice to eat there too much and I made the choice to super size it. I could have gone for a salad and water but a Big Mac with fries and a pop sounded so much better and that is McDonald's fault. LOL.

Things have changed. Moms don't stay home and cook meals like they used to. With both parents working nowadays, it is much easier to grab something on the way home.

Kids don't play outside like they used to. They have video games and movies. Plus, who sends there kids to play anymore without the fear of kidnappings, etc. I know I don't allow my kid out of my sight. Kids don't run around and play in neighborhoods like they used to because there are too many untrustworthy people who might do our children harm.

It all comes down to OUR choices. We aren't being forced to eat fast food. We choose to. I understand the desire to make children healthier and less fat....however, the responsibility lies with parents and their decisions....not because the kids see a clown and want the toy. They can want a Happy Meal toy all they want and the parents can still tell the kid...NO.

I'm so sick and tired of groups wanting to control more and more of our personal lives. Enough is enough.

Senate Blocks VA Accountability BillMay 24, 2014
It's going to a committee. Why? Do they really need to study this bill? It's very simple. Why this bill should become law: The bill would give the VA Secretary greater authority to fire employees and remove them from SES service due to poor performance in the same manner a Member of Congress can remove a member of their staff. The bill would require the VA Secretary to give the Senate and House Veterans’ Affairs Committees notice of removal within 30 days of removing an indi ...

International Monetary Fund: Income Inequality Is Bad For Economic Growth.Nov 03, 2012
Income Inequality May Take Toll on Growth By ANNIE LOWREY WASHINGTON — Income inequality has soared to the highest levels since the Great Depression, and the recession has done little to reverse the trend, with the top 1 percent of earners taking 93 percent of the income gains in the first full year of the recovery. Carbon Dioxide Emissions At Record High, International GoalDec 02, 2012

That apparently reflects a combination of economic weakness, the transfer of some man ...
