Corporate drag?

Posted: Mar 17, 2016

I am about to leave the MT world (please, Lord, soon--I cannot stand seeing NJA all day, and my budget is sunk) and am applying for a job with some law firms. One of them is a really corporate kind of thing. I have always been more of a casual gal, but casual would not cut it with this firm. I am not fat, not skinny, just average build, average looks. Not a show-stopper, not ugly, either. Just an average woman you wouldn't look at twice. If you needed to present a good corporate image, what would you wear? I can afford a couple of new outfits and and then when I (hopefully) have a job, I will be able to add on. I am hoping that those of you who at some time worked in corporate America will share what you wore or what was acceptable. I am by no means a "fashionista," just want to look nice and fit in. Thanks in advance.;

What I Would Do - see msg

For the interview, I would wear a very basic black/dark blue suit or "office-ey" dress, and just dress it up a bit with jewelry. Stockings and low pumps are more than appropriate. You just can't go wrong with that, and then you can purchase as appropriate when you get the job. It is ALWAYS better to "over-dress" just a tad for the interview, than to under-dress.

Minimal make-up, NO PERFUME. And definitely no cleavage!

I'm not clear on what your position would be--receptionist, legal secretary, paralegal, lawyer, manager, but you don't want to "over dress" the part--in other words, you don't want to walk in like you're taking over, even if you are in a managerial type of position.

As you walk in, observe what other people are wearing for the position you would be doing. In other words, if it's a receptionist position, you'll have a good idea on what you may need to purchase.

Good luck!

That's good advice, thank you! - Annie

Thank you for the good advice. I have a nice basic black outfit that should work fine. (I save it for things where I need to be a bit more formal.) Unfortunately, working at home does not tend to make one concerned with being fashionable! :) I would be doing paralegal work, which I did before getting into MT. It is amazing how the corporate culture runs the gamut in the legal field--some firms are very formal, almost stuffy, whereas the others--the ones that do civil rights and workers rights (those are the ones I like) are a bit more casual. Thanks for your good wishes. More and more of our work is being sent overseas and I need to bail.

Don't forget--you don't have to break the bank to look great! There are thrift shops that often have very high-end items for a song, because sometimes they're affiliated with a church or other charity, and they just want to keep up with expenses and clear out the amount of donated clothing they take in. You can also shop your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. You'd be surprised.

You can also "disguise" the same dress with a little bolero or something, and nobody would be the wiser.

Good for you for getting out of MT. I got out a few years ago and have never felt better.

Good luck - Rusty

I agree with the above poster, great advice. I also would get at least 2 pant suits, black and maybe grey or navy blue, that way you could wear the slacks one day and a couple of days later same blazer with a skirt of simple pattern or different color, and then blouses of all colors and simple patterns, as they would work well. Also instead of the blazer/jacket you could wear the suit pants with just a nice blouse and maybe a scarf or clunky necklace. Mix and match, that is how I roll. Good luck, and jealous you are getting out.

Thanks for the great ideas. I begin my formal search on 03/28. We are taking the week before Easter for some family things, then it is down to work! I am so hoping to get out of MT. I know of other MTs who have gotten so, so perhaps there is hope for the rest of us. Have a great weekend!

...you can wear the same darn outfit on every interview you go on. Nobody will know! That's what I did. I had my "interview dress," and wore it each time I had an interview. I didn't buy a stitch of any other clothing while interviewing.

I did finally find a job where I could "dress down," so I'm glad I didn't purchase anything just for the interview process.

I will remember this and thanks - Annie

I only have one good suit at this point. And I am kind of a casual gal, so would rather not find a job that is high fashionista or even high corporate. I'm just a plain Jane. :) I hope I can find something somewhere that is nice clothes but casual. Thanks to you and to all who have been so kind.

No More Corporate Welfare!Apr 08, 2011
I know it's not realistic to think that we could ever get to the point where people would pay the taxes they are supposed to pay, but that would solve our budget problems and nobody would go hungry. We would all save money because we would be driving on better roads, not tearing our cars apart, children will be getting a better education and not have to move in with their parents wh ...

Time For A Corporate SpringMay 26, 2012
A common complaint in today’s world is one of disconnection. Our industrialized world has resulted in less contact with community — we don’t know our neighbors or who grows our food. In the same way that we’ve lost touch with a deeper sense of belonging and place, many of us have become disconnected from the soul of our work. The corporation-worker structure today is a master-servant relationship. We’re slaves to the company, working longer hours for less wage ...

DNC Finally Reveals It's List Of Corporate InfluenceSep 28, 2016
Even the New Republic called the Democratic National Convention 'one big corporate bribe,’ as Trump-phobic donors threw in big money. Corporate interests and influences have gained a great deal of ground in the Democratic Party under Hillary Clinton’s candidacy.
