What do you make of the clip of Romney...

Posted: Jul 24, 2012

....from back in his Olympics days, saying that the Olympic athletes didn't reach their achievements totally on their own?  I'm not quoting him exactly because I don't have the clip right here in front of me, but I saw it played on one of the national news networks last night.  He was saying something to the effect of: You didn't get here on your own.  Your parents and your coach helped you, and your communities built facilities (I assume he meant venues where they could train and practice), etc.

I'm an Obama supporter, so of course I see an immediate parallel to all the criticism Obama received recently for saying that if you're a business, you got help from others to get there.

So far, I haven't heard Romney supporters saying how wrong Romney was to say, in essence, the same thing I felt Obama said: No man is an island!  It takes a village (or a "community" Smile ).  Sometimes, I think we're all just a bunch of hypocrites when it comes to politics!  "We" -- I include all of us in that.

;

You're right. Politics is a scam and a joke. I refuse - to participate any longer. (sm)

A long, long time ago, I was a Republican. They sucked. Then I was a Democrat. They suck, too. Never bothered to be an Independent, because the Powers That Be will never let someone from "outside the Club" get elected.

It's been way too long since ANY party has run ANY candidate that was worth voting for. We're screwed either way, anyway. No matter who is in power, the corporations win, the rich people win, and we regular folks get screwed.

Voting has become irrelevant and useless. America is a country in its decline.

I know what you mean. - (see message)

If anyone thinks America can't fail, remember that the Roman Empire was once a mighty, mighty power. I fear for our country if we continue on as we do, unchecked.

At the same time, I'm reading a book right now that's about the James Garfield presidency and his assassination: "Destiny of the Republic." Gosh, it sounds like the political shenanigans, behind-the-scenes machinations, favor-granting, mud-slinging, etc., were every bit as crazy back then as it is now--maybe more so. As my parents always used to tell me: "There's nothing new under the sun."

The problem with refusing to participate... - Please reconsider.

... is that it's an automatic vote for Obama. If you can live with that, then I guess drop out. If you don't like the way the country is headed, it's your civic duty to at least vote for the candidate who is closer to your values in leading our country the way you believe it should be led.

I do agree with you - America is a country in its decline, but that's biblical. The end times take place in the Middle East; no mention of any other super power being around at that time :)

I don't think its an automatic vote for Obama. - Look at what is SM

happening in some states (Florida as an example). They are doing their best to make it as difficult as possible to vote and they are targeting potential Obama voters. I live in a state that always goes democratic and sometimes on voting day I think "why bother" because I vote democratic. I always vote anyway. In my state, there are no "social" issues that tend to get certain kinds of people to the voting booth, i.e., gay issues, abortion issues, etc. If you live in a battleground state and you are a democrat, I would suggest you do cast a vote or your state might pass laws that take you back to the 1950s (JMHO). As a progressive, I reject that.
Same old fear mongering - If you are a legal, register voter
[ In Reply To ..]
There is nothing to worry about and this spin is getting ridiculous. The only one blocking legal voters IS Obama and Holder, and let's not forget the New Black Panthers. I live in a battleground state and people are sick to death of the way Dems have highjacked our voting booths. We have had RECORD voter fraud, and imagine this, every single one was a Democrat. Dems routinely try to keep legal voters out of the polls and make no bones about, all the while screaming "victim". The only trip back to the 1950s is in someone's delusional thought process (or atually the lack thereof of a thought process). This is where "critical thinking" for the voter fearmongering perpetrators would really be of some benefit. I have to show ID to buy cough syrup for God's sake. If you got nothing to hide as a voter, you have no problem with ID. Oh, and save the "some don't have ID garbage"...they can obtain ID for booze, medication, Access, driver's license, check cashing, Sam's Club membership, gym memberships and our state GIVES OUT picture IDs FOR FREE.

Agree with you/Reasons I need ID and I am legal - Conservative

If may be asked to provide photo ID for the following as a legal American citizen, there is no reason at all not to provide photo ID to vote.

1. If stopped by police.
2. To pick up some regulated prescription drugs.
3. To buy alcohol.
4. When applying for insurance.
5. Airline/train travel.
6. Buying things with my debit card.
7. Credit card/Department store credit application.
8. Donating blood.
9. College applications.

Showing ID to vote is a non-issue and should be required from everyone. In my state, even though ID is provided free, they will also accept utility bills, mail addressed to you from the borough, state, or Federal government. Everybody, no matter what income level, is capable of showing legal residency. No reason at all why ID should not be shown.

Here's the full quote and video. - You be the judge.

“You Olympians, however, know you didn't get here solely on your own power. For most of you, loving parents, sisters or brothers, encouraged your hopes, coaches guided, communities built venues in order to organize competitions. All Olympians stand on the shoulders of those who lifted them. We’ve already cheered the Olympians, let’s also cheer the parents, coaches, and communities. All right! [pumps fist].” His salute to the communities is my favorite part.

Video is linked below.

My biggest rub here is Romney (born with a silver spoon in his mouth) insinuates that President Obama (raised by a single mom who needed public assistance along the way), who worked his way through school and took out student loans, then repaid them, has no idea what it means to be a self-made man...AS IF the Romney WEALTH, family name and position played no role whatsoever in his acceptance into Cranbrook, Stanford, BYU or Harvard Law School. We’re supposed to blindly accept he got into those places on good looks, academic prowess, a wing and a prayer? Really?

Judging by the statement he made at the Olympics, back in the day before he climbed back into the swamp after his failed US Senate bid in 1994 (which he ran on "change," LOL), Romney clearly agreed with President Obama that "no man is an island" and that "it takes a village." When he was running for governor of blue state Massachusetts, he played down his party affiliation (which he had switched from Independent to GOP in 1994) and identified himself as a progressive moderate. During his service as governor, and with his eye on higher office, he morphed again back toward the right when he had his Pro-Choice/Pro-Life conversion among other shifts on social issues. After his dark-horse outsider bid in 2008 flopped because he couldn't pass the conservative base sniff test, his beliefs simply blew whichever way the political winds and polls would take them.

By now, his Ayn Randian persona stands in such stark contrast to where he started out from, it is absolutely impossible to know who the real Mitt Romney is or what he stands for. Since I get whiplash just trying to think about it, it will take a braver person than I to decide exactly where he was coming from when he made his closing statement at the 2002 Olympics. I guess it's supposed to remain top secret until after the election.

Obama was talking about Socialism - mimi

[ In Reply To ..]
When Obama talking about a person did not get there on their own, he was not talkikng about family helping or friends. He was talking about his socialist agenda and sharing the wealth and wanting more government involvement in our lives!

So does this mean Romney was hawking HIS - socialist agenda in 2002?

[ In Reply To ..]
Both of them were talking about the spirit of unity in the UNITED States of America and our traditions of working together to achieve American exceptionalism. No more, no less.
Nope. Romney is a capitalist, - Obama is a socialist
[ In Reply To ..]
Two very different philosophies. A capitalist believes in working for his money and the right to keep/spend what he has earned. A socialist believes in making a capitalist spread the wealth around, not working for his own keep, and has a victim mentality.
So does that mean Romney was a socialist before - he was a capitalist? nm

"A new poll conducted by NBC and the Wall Street Journal shows that support for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney among black people stands at an incredible zero percent. Nada. Zilch.
