We need a new topic to discuss and debate

Posted: May 8, 2011

On my mind has been the stealth helicoptor that was left behind in the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. I think the young heroes on that raid just got a little too anxious on that one.

We could talk about whether or not America tortures people, waterboarding, etc. I believe that torture isn't right, whether it's being done to or by American soldiers.

Another topic I wouldn't mind discussing is whether Americans disagree about politics more these days than in the past.

Nuclear Energy - sm

I wouldn't mind a good debate about whether we should go toward nuclear energy or forget it after the Japanese disaster. I don't really have an opinion on that one and I might learn something.

don't have, sufficient knowledge to get rid of the radioactive waste. We can't keep burying it and expecting it to "go away" sooner or later. We'll run out of places to put this waste sooner or later.

On one of the sites I read, someone suggested we go back to hydroelectric power. That's one idea, but would it work for the whole country?

Until solar becomes less expensive (but is something I approve and would love to have here), we just have to deal with oil and gas and reduce it little by little over time. Maybe there should be a gas holiday; i.e., certain areas of the country not driving 1/2 to 1 day a week, that would help. It would work something like the rationing did back in the '70s.

Ocean Waves and Geothermal Energy - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been watching a couple of companies.

Ormat is a company that is working on geothermal energy, but so far it can't produce enough of it to make a difference.

Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. is a company trying to harness the power of ocean waves. I read recently that they've only managed to produce a small amount of energy so far.

So apparently it's going to be quite some time before these two industries are ready to make a dent in what we need.

I've been considering investing more in natural gas - Pros and cons?

[ In Reply To ..]
Does anyone know what the problem is with natural gas? We have lots of that, don't we?

I just thought of something. In areas of the country where they have been doing fracking, I think that's what it's called and I am surely not knowledgeable about it at all obviously, there seem to be increased numbers of earthquakes. Some are saying that it is related. That would be a definite downside, but something we should find out about before we do too much of it.

If you do a google search on "fracking", you'll - Backwards Typist

come up with a lot of sites. PA has been in the headlines lately because of the recent blowout by Chesapeake Energy. If you get a chance, watch Boomtown (I think it's on the History Channel) or Gasland (HBO or you can buy or rent the video).

This site will answer some questions for you:

Here is another site that might be worthwhile:
http://www.earthworksaction.org/FracingDetails.cfm

The below site is about fracking in PA. Click on any of those links for info. Under one of the links is the risks and challenges to PA Marcellus Producers:

Truthhurts: I See You Have Tried To Discuss Again (sm)Jul 23, 2013
in a calm and rational manner this country's problems with race.  O'Reilly explained it very well; that was the best talking points I have ever seen him do.  People on the other side of the aisle on this board don't want to discuss anything that they don't agree with - if you're interested, I know a place where you can discuss rationally - both sides of an issue.  If you're interested, I've checked the box above and will respond to your post.&nbs ...

Asking Again To Keep The Conversation Civil And Discuss PoliticsApr 13, 2012
I am reading down the board and lots of posters are insulting other posters.  Some have got insults mixed in with the subject matter it's becoming difficult to find where it starts.  Insults are coming from all over. I am asking everyone once again to please refrain from insulting other posters.  Lets all be adults and discuss the topics that are important to us.  I know posters are pushing the buttons, but try and ignore them and just stick to the topics.  We real ...

moderators for the upcoming presidential debates a list of "acceptable" topics that can be discussed.  This came after video, in November 2009 (not the only video before flamers start), of Obama talking about the $ 700-billion cuts he made to Medicare.  Democrats said they want to "provide" the questions and "subject matter" that would be "acceptable" for discussion.  Removing all questions about the $700-billion in cuts Obamacare made to Medicare, the lack of budget by ...

Okay, Let's Discuss - Quote - Can The FLOTUS Be Impeached? (sm)Jun 07, 2013
One newspaper said that Mrs Obama had backed out of the summit to avoid being overshadowed by the "very beautiful" Mrs Peng, while another called it a "national shame".  This is bad, but just one more thing on the list of how they don't respect anyone.  She needs to learn what her duties are as FLOTUS.  Another Chinese newspaper wants to know, "doesn't the U.S. have babysitters?"  Here's a link to an Australian paper. link ...

Who is the most interesting person you have ever met?  Why? OR:  Who is the most influential person you have ever met and why?    For me the most interesting person I ever met was when I was in college.  To fill in some elective hours I was suppose to take 9 credit hours of history.  I registered late one semester and the Latin American history class (Mex-Black American) I wanted to take was filled up.  All that was left was African America history.  W ...

but related and nonpartisan (I hope). How much difference do you think any candidate can make under the present system?  It is said that every senator, from the time they take office, has to spend 1/3 of their time raising money for the next election.  Once in office they then have to "pay back" their donors in some way.  Would you like to see the system change and how do you think it would affect politics?      ...

Serious question:  Does anyone ever wonder why you exist.  I mean what is the purpose of life.  I have no kids, don't live near family.  I get up, walk to the computer, turn it on and work, and work, and work, and work.  Oh yeah, pay bills, go grocery shopping, and cook.  Have a DH but he doesn't work (lack of jobs in the economy).  My family is across country, his family is in another state.  Have no friends.  Sometimes I feel like I just e ...

What folks don't understand is that was the whole idea of the mandate.  You can't just have sick people have insurance.  I know you folks on the pub side will disagree with this idea yet you have no problem with people losing insurance if they have preexisting conditions ...

My Take On The Debate. SmOct 14, 2015
I was struck last night by the huge difference in what we can infer about the nature of Bernie's and Hillary's thought processes while they were processing the challenging questions that Anderson Cooper threw out at them individually. Hillary's demeanor reminded me of one of those canned Miss America Pageant contestant types whom you can tell is so focused on searching her memory bank for a previously stored 'good answer' that the importance of the issue itself was tota ...

Diaper Debate...Sep 17, 2011
Okay, so here it is. I have a very good friend who is expecting. She is low income and has MA, WIC, food stamps, etc. She is slowly buying clothes, furniture, etc. a little at a time before baby arrives around May.  She knows about Goodwill, rummage sales, resale shops, and all that too.  She has other friends as well (who have had children) telling her which diapers are the best. She wants to start buying diapers now so she has a few packs/boxes to start with when the baby arrives. Sh ...

I'm So Tired Of The Tax Debate!May 14, 2010
Tax the rich more....tax the poor less, etc.  It is my opinion that if you tax the rich more, it won't help that much considering there are so many loopholes in the tax code that I'm sure the rich will find a way to get out of paying more taxes.  Why don't we just do a flat tax.  That will eliminate the loopholes.  Simple and easy...probably why they won't do it though.  They need something confusing so the crooks in the world can get out of paying ta ...

How To Debate The DonaldAug 03, 2015
This article is amusing. I would hope there is a lot of practice going on for other Republicans on how not to let him get under their skin. They should refuse to answer him directly (which I don't think they are supposed to anyway) and calmly present their perspective, no matter how wild his responses and answers are. If possible, they should ignore him and pretend he has not spoken at all. I particularly liked this reference-- "Other than a dart gun?," he said. "A tranquilizer gun ...
