homeschooling debate

Posted: Apr 20, 2010

Looking for the good, the bad and the ugly.  I have 2 elemetary aged children and am currently working PT but making next to nothing.  Over the past year we have adjusted our standard of living radically based on my dropping pay/health as an MT and my DH's job furloughs and cutbacksl.  I get medical insurance from his company, so I don't really need any benefits.  If I lose my job, I could potentially home school the kids.  Not sure if they would benefit greatly from this or not.

Thoughts?

Big HS supporter! Not a debate at all... - reenie

hi! First off, the question of whether you want to HS or not is not a debate. Its a personal choice and one that should not be criticized or challenged by anyone. It is not a direct negative reflection or criticism on public schools either.

I would love to HS and started taking out books at the library to do some research (my little one is only 2 right now but I want to be as informed as possible so I can make the best decision for our family when time comes). There are TONS of resources at the library. Also, check out your state resources online, state chapters of HS support groups etc...this is imperative to networking too and incorporating group activities for your homeschool.

From what I learned, the possibilities are ENDLESS and open to anything you find that will work for you and your family. Your child(ren) will receive the BEST education in the long run as I truly believe no other schooling environment will know your child(ren) better then you and will have the tools to instill a love of learning.

Good luck in whatever you decide, but remember to do as much networking, reading, NOW! Empower yourself with knowledge.

Home schooling can produce excellent or poor students - yochana

It's according to how much time you spend on it. I have seen HS produce dummies because the parent was not responsible enough to be consistent with schooling. On the other hand, I was HS from 9-12 grades with a dramatic increase from C to A+ student simply because I learned a little slower than other students and was always left behind. After being able to study at my own pace I produced better grades. My cousin has 4 children in HS. Her now 20yo son earned a FULL scholarship to the local university due to exceptionally high SAT scores. But it takes a LOT of your time.

We made the jump into HS this year (7th grade) and my only regret is having not done it several years ago. We decided on Calvert because I needed the guidance and suggested scheduling; also I could afford it. It does take a lot of time. Actually its the favorite part of my day now. As an IC MT I can juggle my work around his schooling. Also be aware it takes several months to "unschool" and to sort of relax and take each day as it comes. Homeschooling is definitely a winner!

I liked the way they were set up. Really good school. My high school was through ICS which no longer exists. It was all open book tests, but you really had to know your stuff. It wasnât easy at all. I really, really learned a lot. Including Gregg Shorthand which tells you how OLD I am. LOL.

I started home schooling my daughter this year. We go through an online public school actually so I don't have to do much besides help her when she needs assistance. This particular school is available in many states and it is free. If you don't mind my asking which state you live in, I could give you a little more info on this school. I am signing up my younger son to do it now that I've gotten a feel for how it all works. My daughter and I have gotten a lot closer now that she is home with me everyday and her grades have improved tremendously, as has her attitude now that she's not involved in the every day drama of high school!

thank you all for the ideas - great info in here

I would love to hear about the public school/homeschool program too. I live in GA.

The school we go through isn't offered in your state unfortunately because it is offered in many others, but do a google search of Georgia online public schools or virtual schools and you should get some results. Check through all the options available. Some offer K-12 and some offer just high school. One that I found by doing a google search is Georgia Cyber Academy. These online schools are tuition free public schools. The one that we attend supply the computer and printer, with an internet stipend, books, art kits, gym kits, science kits, novels for english class, etc. They provide postage to send materials back at the end of the year. Each school works differently, but for the most part, in our state, all the virtual schools offer the same type of materials/supplies and it is all free. Good luck with whatever you decide!!

How do you all homeschool without buying a cirriculum? - RoadrunnerMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't have the funds to buy those cirriculum but want to HS my 2nd grader. How do you all go about finding teaching materials and what areas are age appropriate to teach on?

research online for TONS of resources! - xoxo

[ In Reply To ..]
there are tons of places online to go for your HS needs. Lots of stuff you can print offline too. Check out what the previous poster said about virtual public schools. The resources are there, you just have to do the research and have the willingness to look for it.

Check out your states HS clubs/organizations. Network with them and I'm sure you will find just what you need/want. Good luck!

The first person to ask a question was Kerry Ladka. "Was Ladka satisfied with how the president responded? Simply no. “I really didn’t think he totally answered the question satisfactorily as far as I was concerned,” Ladka tells the Erik Wemple Blog. After the debate . . . "President Obama, though, wasn’t done with Kerry Ladka. 'After the debate, the president came over to me and spent about two minutes with me privately,' says the 61-year-old Ladka, who works at Global ...

My Take On The Debate. SmOct 14, 2015
I was struck last night by the huge difference in what we can infer about the nature of Bernie's and Hillary's thought processes while they were processing the challenging questions that Anderson Cooper threw out at them individually. Hillary's demeanor reminded me of one of those canned Miss America Pageant contestant types whom you can tell is so focused on searching her memory bank for a previously stored 'good answer' that the importance of the issue itself was tota ...

Is Anyone Watching The GOP Debate On CNN?Feb 22, 2012

Diaper Debate...Sep 17, 2011
Okay, so here it is. I have a very good friend who is expecting. She is low income and has MA, WIC, food stamps, etc. She is slowly buying clothes, furniture, etc. a little at a time before baby arrives around May.  She knows about Goodwill, rummage sales, resale shops, and all that too.  She has other friends as well (who have had children) telling her which diapers are the best. She wants to start buying diapers now so she has a few packs/boxes to start with when the baby arrives. Sh ...

I'm So Tired Of The Tax Debate!May 14, 2010
Tax the rich more....tax the poor less, etc.  It is my opinion that if you tax the rich more, it won't help that much considering there are so many loopholes in the tax code that I'm sure the rich will find a way to get out of paying more taxes.  Why don't we just do a flat tax.  That will eliminate the loopholes.  Simple and easy...probably why they won't do it though.  They need something confusing so the crooks in the world can get out of paying ta ...

How To Debate The DonaldAug 03, 2015
This article is amusing. I would hope there is a lot of practice going on for other Republicans on how not to let him get under their skin. They should refuse to answer him directly (which I don't think they are supposed to anyway) and calmly present their perspective, no matter how wild his responses and answers are. If possible, they should ignore him and pretend he has not spoken at all. I particularly liked this reference-- "Other than a dart gun?," he said. "A tranquilizer gun ...

Debate Impressions? Sep 17, 2015
On TV this morning, Trump is complaining about the length of the debate.  Commentators are saying he appeared tired and "disappeared"  for about 40 minutes.  Kind of amusing coming from the "high energy" guy.  Do you think if he got the 2:00 am phone call he would say "call me back after 10 and I've had my coffee"? I think it is sort of insulting that he is complaining about standing for 3 hours.  Just think of all the Walmart workers on their feet all day, some wo ...

Need Opinions On An Ongoing Debate Between DH And MeSep 21, 2011
My DH and I have been having an ongoing argument about family obligations on the part of grown children.  We are so invested in our points of view that we sometimes get almost hostile and have to stop the conversation. We Need A New Topic To Discuss And DebateMay 08, 2011
On my mind has been the stealth helicoptor that was left behind in the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. I think the young heroes on that raid just got a little too anxious on that one. We could talk about whether or not America tortures people, waterboarding, etc. I believe that torture isn't right, whether it's being done to or by American soldiers. Another topic I wouldn't mind discussing is whether Americans disagree about politics more these days than in the past. ...

Outsourcing, Offshoring Debate Jun 26, 2012
This article explains how it is not just offshoring that is detrimental to our jobs.  Outsourcing jobs within the US is becoming increasingly common and leads to lower wages and fewer people with benefits.  Sounds like MTSOs accepting work from big MT companies and then hiring ICs to do the work at low wages with no benefits. ...
