Since healthcare is the main topic of discussion

Posted: Jan 8, 2014

on this board lately I would refer you all to the Steven Brill articles in Time Magazine which tackle the issue of the cost of healthcare without being partisan.  There is a very long article that was written last year and will be ongoing this year.  It would open up new areas of discussion on this board.

Also, be sure to follow it up with this... - sm

as well as many related articles by just googling Steven Brill. All very interesting and could take the discussion of healthcare in a different direction - just for a nice change.

which are very interesting but seem to be pointing to statistical discrepancies that Brill cites. Even if you accept the fact that American medical care is better than Brill suggests, it is unfortunately only better for those who can afford to be insured.

Healthcare's Bipartisan Problem. Almost Half Of Healthcare SpendingJan 13, 2017
healthiest half of the population consumes only 3% of health care costs. The only alternative would appear to be taxpayer subsidies. It is next to impossible, politically, to take away freebees once in place. Income redistribution continues to increase. The 2010 health law, also known as Obamacare, forced insurers to sell coverage to anyone, at the same price, regardless of their risk of incurring big claims. That provision was popular. Not so were rules requiring nearly everyone to have ins ...

Let's All Remember The 3 Main Reasons Hillary MustSep 23, 2016
These transcend party: 1. Hillary Clinton is utterly devoid of moral character. 2. Hillary Clinton betrayed her office and peddled influence on a scale that even Boss Tweed would have found staggering. 3. Hillary Clinton is entrenched in exactly the old-time back-room inside-dealing power structure of which this nation has had more than enough - on both sides of the aisle. However reluctant some might be to admit it, we all know that these three things are true. Any one of them is suffic ...

Abuse Of The Term Main Stream Media - Which I Love!May 15, 2011
I am a lover of Main Stream Media. The more I see of some of the weirdness outside the mainstream news sources, the more thankful I am that we have a good source of news that we can depend upon. Is anyone else sick and tired of hearing the term, "Main Stream Media" as if it were a bad thing, and then to make it worse, Sarah Palin's ignorant use of it as the cutsey term, "Lame Stream Media"? Pesonally, I am perfectly capable of viewing any media, whether it be on the regular networks or ca ...

but related and nonpartisan (I hope). How much difference do you think any candidate can make under the present system?  It is said that every senator, from the time they take office, has to spend 1/3 of their time raising money for the next election.  Once in office they then have to "pay back" their donors in some way.  Would you like to see the system change and how do you think it would affect politics?      ...

skyrocket, not because of ACA but the uncertainty on if they will get paid through subsidities with the republican plan.  A big part is the pubs want to remove the mandate that everyone have insurance. What folks don't understand is that was the whole idea of the mandate.  You can't just have sick people have insurance.  I know you folks on the pub side will disagree with this idea yet you have no problem with people losing insurance if they have preexisting conditions ...

We Need A New Topic To Discuss And DebateMay 08, 2011
On my mind has been the stealth helicoptor that was left behind in the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. I think the young heroes on that raid just got a little too anxious on that one. We could talk about whether or not America tortures people, waterboarding, etc. I believe that torture isn't right, whether it's being done to or by American soldiers. Another topic I wouldn't mind discussing is whether Americans disagree about politics more these days than in the past. ...

Landlord And Rental DiscussionJun 23, 2017
This is really a vent/rant more than anything, but I wanted to share an experience in regard to renting an apartment and wondered if anyone else had anything to share.  The rental market where I live is extremely tight, rent has gone up across the board and it's really difficult to find nice, affordable housing.  I live in a pretty nice place and have had the same landlords for years at 2 different locations, there really aren't any issues here.  Recently I have bee ...

HealthcareMay 09, 2017
I had Obamacare and even with the subsidy still could not afford it and was paying for nothing essentially because there was no way I would ever meet the deductible.   To be forced to have to have something is not the answer and as awful as some think that the repeal and replace of Obamacare is, we have to do something and we have to start somewhere.  Obamacare was meant to fail and did noone any favors and, by the way, we were LIED to.  We have to have choices and competitio ...

Why Don't Some Consider BC To Be Part Of Healthcare?Oct 22, 2012
Insurance should cover prescription drugs, such as antibiotics, narcotics, antidepressants (how many here are on THOSE??) and birth control pills. Are birth control pills considered different b/c they're related to sex?  Is that what it boils down to? New Healthcare ExchangesAug 13, 2013
I don't happen to think the new healthcare exchanges are political, happen to believe they belong on the health issues board because they will affect all of us. It was made very clear tonight that the politicians voted against what their constituants wanted.  That to me makes a sham of our political system.  We should not be democrats vs republicans; we should be Americans.  What kind of mess are we leaving for our children to clean up and how will they do it if they do not have the education and resources to do it?  This is all being done on fake money.  It will run out, and like many who learned that you cannot buy a house t ...
